    Nothing is made to last. You won't need to buy another one if it is. I'm on my third microwave in the last 10 years. My mother still uses the first one she got in late 80's. Cheap and disposable is the way the world is, and I have stopped buy cheap products from so many companies that I am starting to lose options.

    What they don't get is that I will spend more for quality. But most things that cost more now are no better than the cheaper products.

    The IT professionals are viewed by upper management as expensive fools. It's part of our culture: look at the fool on the desert island in the CDW commercials, even back to that looks-like-punk-rock-chicken guy in the (I think it was) Ameritrade commercials from the 90's.

    We're not seen as the serious professionals from the coat and tie mainframe guys of years past. That makes it much easier for them to outsource, because we're not worth it.

    At my place of employment (large multinational company) I have been trying to get our PHB's to even realize that we need to start working on this. I've been trying for a year, and haven't gotten anywhere. It isn't sexy, it won't save money, and it won't help the executives use their iphone in an airport, so there are no resources.

    At some point int he near future we'll need to connect with someone or something that is IPv6 only, and I'll have to explain why we didn't do something earlier. Can't win for losing.

    The new Gen of ISR routers have a USB console. Not sure about the Nexus line, but they may as well.

    Add Indians to that. I work with an Indian outsource vendor who used our policies and procedures, along with our home grown tools (which were not protected) to win a different contract.

    It goes with the territory.

    On the flip side, we used to share amongst ourselves. Now it is 'copying'. Might be a bit of racism at work, but it might be stealing as well.

    There goes my karma.....

    Wow, I have had 4 Cisco switches reload this year due to "Parity Errors", which they attribute to 'Cosmic Radiation*'. I thought that we were in a high point of solar activity.

    * Not sure if solar activity is source of said cosmic radiation.

    Geez, you sound too much like me. My first day in MIS in 1993 I found a PC with Natas on it. Then I went searching around the building and found a few more, along with infected floppies. That was nasty just because when it popped up after hiding for a while it destroyed all executables that ran.

    I suddenly feel so old.

    I saw an HD-DVD player at Sam's club for $128. When I saw it I looked at my wife and "That's it. Blu-ray won." It was the only HD-DVD player in the store. And there was nothing but Blu-ray for high def content.

    And this is a joke. I, and my family (Mexican wife and 'mixed' child) get waved through when we say "American" at the border. Now my wife is a naturalized citizen, but they take one look at me (white as can be) and we get one question before we are waived through.

    As for an RFID solution, what makes that better than the 'instincts' of the Border Patrol? I think that could be faked so fast that a young male of middle eastern descent could could get through as an asian business person just because the border card said so. //Trolling, just for the fun of it. I have a lot of unearned karma....

    It is the new American way. In the company I work for we have VP's and CxO's traveling the world to visit the 5000 people who replaced the 300 who kept IT running very well and very inexpensively. They never visited us.

    Now, they get all get bonuses for saving millions, while they don't count the millions in downtime as the systems no longer can run at 99.999% availability. Next big lost shipment should earn them a new boat/car/house.....

    I hate to say "mod parent up" but I see this every day. We in IT have to accurate, even when we are dealing with "what if" scenarios. No matter what happens, IT loses.
