No, it isn't. Read the manpage:

The X.Org Foundation requests that the following names be used when referring to this software:
    • X
    • X Window System
    • X Version 11
    • X Window System, Version 11
    • X11

I don't know where this "X Window" thing came from. It is wrong. As you can see, the correct name is "X" or "X Window System".

  5. Re:Send jobs overseas, CMM on Holding Developers Liable For Bugs · · Score: 1
Fundamentally I see this idea of liability as a flawed way of approaching the problems of security. People promoting this idea are usually not programmers themselves and do not understand how computer security really works, although in this case the guy surprisingly actually seems to have some proper credentials.

It is impossible to develop a completely secure program - even the best programmers make mistakes and have bugs in their code. It's safe to say that most security holes are not intentional. Security is part of an iterative process of fixing these bugs and improving the system.

It's easy to just shout "blame the programmers! hold them responsible", but in the end, we need to look at the actual effects that a law forcing responsibility for software bugs would have. Would this actually help improve the security of software? Suing programmers will just deter people from writing software, and security holes will still slip through.

For people like architects and doctors, liability is important, as malpractice can endanger life. The same is not true of most software.

Lastly, I hate that firefox doesn't obey normal unix copy and paste rules. There's no option to right click in a text field and delete everything in it without highlighting the text that is already there. In opera you just click in the box and type ctrl+U. This is particularly annoying when I'm messing with phpmyadmin.
How is this "not following normal copy and paste rules"?

  19. Re:Eliminates patent benefit. on Tim Bray Finds An Affinity Between Patents And OSS · · Score: 1
Actually it negates the usefulness of Open Source. Infact the whole idea proposed is a contradiction in terms. Read The Open Source Definition:

    1. Free Redistribution
    - The license shall not restrict any party from selling or giving away the software as a component of an aggregate software distribution containing programs from several different sources. The license shall not require a royalty or other fee for such sale.

If a patent is restricting the use of the code then it is not Open Source. If it cannot be used then it is really no different from a software company releasing a proprietary closed source .dll containing the implementation of their patented algorithm. Ultimately he is just promoting describing the patent in a different way. Any competent engineer should be able to implement an algorithm from a well-written patent description anyway - while useful the source code would ultimately be redundant.

Tim has missed the entire point of the patent debate.
