My cousin is on a month-to-month plan with T-Mobile. She bought the phone from them on credit, basically. She pays something like an extra $20/mo for 2 years to pay off the phone. The total cost of the phone (~$480) is comparable to what the phone costs with a subsidy from any carrier. I believe she has the Galaxy S, or whatever T-Mobile calls their version of it. But, the key is that she has no contract. If she cancels, she's still on the hook for the phone, but she could theoretically stop paying for data.

You are an asshole and an idiot. No "subsidized" phone is actually subsidized. Instead, the carrier rolls the monthly payment for your phone into your monthly bill. The problem is that this payment isn't itemized as-such. Therefore, when you bring your own phone, they conveniently ignore that some of the monthly fee is for the phone they aren't giving you.

The "killer app" isn't any particular app for me. It's the UI. There is absolutely nothing I can do on my iPad that I couldn't do on my Macbook (which I own) or on some theoretical netbook, but it's just plain easier and faster on my iPad. It's more portable. It's easier to use in a variety of positions. Due to the focused nature of smaller apps, it takes less time to get something done.

The battery life after 6 months of constant use is way better than my laptop had when it was brand new. I use it for navigation on trips instead of lugging around a laptop and Garmin hand-held GPS unit, as I use to do. Being way lighter than a laptop also makes it easier to travel with.

Calling the iPad a phone is like calling a laptop a phone. Both can only make calls using some kind of VoIP client. It would be much more accurate to call the iPhone a small iPad that is also a phone. Or call the iPad a large iPod Touch.

I haven't heard of a country that does not have immigration laws, laws which also cover tourists and other visitors. Anyone who bypasses those laws to live in a country is doing so illegally. Anyone who is not a citizen is, by definition, an alien. Being an alien in an illegal manner makes one an illegal alien. QED.
