  1. The camera I use... on WebCam Options for Linux? · · Score: 1

is a Xirlink. I wasn't sure which camera I could use either a few weeks ago, so I figured I should just look in the kernel to see what was supported. I enabled V4L support in the kernel, and then looked around in the USB section and found the Xirlink driver (among others). I got the xirlink cuz it was 9.99 ;) Even with 7 bucks shipping it still came out cheaper than any of the other cameras I could find. Works great too, though I've only really used it with gnomemeeting.

I'm not an admin but I still need samba in order to get work done at the office... I have been using it to send people files from my laptop, and just yesterday I figured out how to get printing to work with samba+cups+foomatic+hpijs(finally). Thanks to the samba team I can have the only linux box (my laptop) in the office (or quite possibly entire company) and still get things done, without having to reboot or use the slow computer that's under my desk...

I just compiled and installed samba-3.0.0 over the existing install and everything still works great too...

Or maybe the EFF doesn't see merit to the case?

I noticed that the CoinStar coin-counting machines also run some form of NT. Back when I worked in a supermarket I found out that the coinstar would actually dialup with a modem from time to time, perhaps to give updates or state of repair.

I just hope whoever maintains the ATM's knows what they are doing... I really need my money... and I'm not sure if the FDIC will help me if the ATM starts giving it away..

  14. Re:Extigy is great on Computer Audio - To USB or Not to USB? · · Score: 3, Informative

The driver you found is the one I'm using now. I havent had any problems with it to date. I'm still playing around with the test3 kernel, which supports the extigy without an external driver. So far I can tell you that it plays ok, from xmms and from gxmame. I haven't tried recording with it yet though.
The guy on that who wrote that 2.4.21 driver mentions that he's not sure if the extigy works with alsa, but since alsa is what the 2.6 kernel uses, I am guessing that it does.

  15. Extigy is great on Computer Audio - To USB or Not to USB? · · Score: 4, Informative

I use the extigy and I must say it's great.
I needed something for my laptop so that I could record live mixes from my dj equipment, since my laptop only had a mic input (really horrible for recording from a device). I decided on the extigy because I found a linux driver for it (you need a separate driver for 2.4.21, and so far it works with 2.6.0 test3, at least for playback).

So far I can tell you it records great. It records at 48000Hz (which means you have to convert wavs down to 44100 before you can burn em, but it's easy with sox). I haven't tried the 5.1 capabilities yet since I don't have money for a 5.1 speaker set;) I also haven't had a chance to test the midi capabilities with it yet, but my dmesg does say the usbmidi drivers are working.

I think the coolest thing about it so far, aside from the fact that it just works well, is that if you know what you're doing, you can write programs to make the remote control do whatever you want. The linux-2.4.21 drivers I found came with an xmms wrapper example that works pretty well. You can use the volume controls, stop, pause, play, etc. and switch songs... I spent the first week I had it just watchin my xmms volume knobs move when I pressed the vol+ button haha.

The extigy is also super light if you want to carry it with you. I think the adapter might weigh more than the device itself. I'm not sure how the extigy works any other OS, but I guess it would perform well if you had the right software.

Or are they just not eager to convert people? I use fluxbox now, and have tried window maker, enlightenment, sawfish and metacity (GNOME isn't a window manager?)... Each window manager has its good points I guess. I dunno I'm just a little disappointed. I was hoping to at least find a little something along the lines of "heres why you should use this instead of __" any advocates here? so far afterstep doesnt look to popular;)

Maybe thats a problem that only I'm lucky enough to have, but I'm sure if it didnt take so much to use it, more people would. It seems silly to have to install an entire (or at least most of) an old version of a "complete desktop environment" just to run one app.
