If he's somewhat intelligent, perhaps he will ask Gates to fix his advisory board for him. The man has surrounded himself with the wrong people -> they're using him like a puppet, and he can't see that, and probably won't see it until the company is being sized for a coffin. They aren't his friends, they don't really think he's a business genius or whatever smoke they're blowing up his ass, and he needs to ditch them NOW. While he's at it, promote some of the IT and some of the CS / SE people to fill their spots. Find the people that others hate, not because they're annoying, but because they will tell anyone when they're making a grave mistake, regardless of rank. The IT guys will tell him what works (from a corporate standpoint), and the CS / SE guys will tell him what can be done (programmatically speaking).

Frankly, it's surprising he didn't do this already. The original trio of Gates (half-lawyer, half-businessman, half-programmer), Paul Allen (all programmer), and Ballmer (all business) worked; things held one without Paul, but without Gates it has gone downhill. Make a new trio, and try for the same attributes. If that means offering them some stock, do it.

That's because mathematics education has improved. Cost of oil > cost of other energy sources, the market shifts to other energy sources; cost of oil cost of other energy sources, the market shifts back to oil. The fight for the status quo only maintains itself if you attempt to shift the market by other means; hence the inherent danger in attempting to use such methods, as they inevitably fail when the subsidies run out.

It's an election year, and everyone of any intelligence treats the "I was a libertarian, then I saw the light..." the same way they treat the "I was gay, but then I saw the light..."-style posts; as in, it's probably made up.

Why are libertarians being attacked? Same reason the greens got nuked. Most people can't see outside the one-dimensional axis that their political views occur on; trying to explain to them that there's a whole lot of other viewpoints out there is like telling them there's a gateway to Narnia in their armoire. And of those who can, a small number are active in one of the two major parties; they fill their friends with all sorts of "facts," such that they never get around to verifying many of them.

'Tis quite alright. I got the gospel of Romney talk last night, along with the 10 minutes of hate for Obama. I calmly explained that having reviewed both of their post-election economic plans, neither instills confidence in me; as such, I will abstain from voting for either, unless something unforeseen requires me to rethink my position. I see more government spending with corporate largess in the future, with defense / tax cuts on one hand, and welfare / insurance on the other. No matter which one is elected, I lose. I despise that; I hate slanted scales and mandatory non-choices. Call me after they begin selling people in the marketplace, as that's where we are headed.

Well, that solves the energy storage problem for renewables, at least for localities that have suitable geological structures. I'm also going to assume that the efficiency for these wind turbines is top notch, and losses due to transmission are minimal.

When I first read the article & summary, I thought I was going to have a stroke. For a brief moment, I pictured them burning natural gas to store compressed air in the cavern. I wondered how bad the efficiency of their gas turbines would have to be, at less than full tilt, for them to consider this a good idea.
