By voting for Nader, you stand a chance getting his parties viewpoints discussed. He wasn't allowed in the presidential debate because the Green party didn't yet have a poll rating of 15%. What if they did? Even breaking that, and actually getting him in a debate would do wonders for the political landscape.

Since we've now become a Corporate Republic, I've pretty much come to the conclustion that the guideline for treating people is roughly something like : "The majority of people are apathetic and don't care about anything but getting what they want. If you complain, and show you want things to be better, you aren't apathetic. Therefore, if you complain and try and improve the world, you are in the minority, and your patronage doesn't matter when compared to the revenue generated by the majority. Therefore you are ignored."

Seems to be what's happening to /.

Starfleet Command was a truly inspired Trek game - taking the complexity of SFB, and trying to shove it all into a video game couldn't be easy. SFC managed to come out of it, not only playable, but really, really enjoyable *if* you knew what you were doing (being an SFB player, I was enjoying it =)

If only it hadn't been ruined by a buttfuck of a setup interface, it could have kicked ass - as it was, playing mulitplayer was excruciatingly painful.

I'm truly, truly looking forward to the next iteration of SFC - I'm really thankful that it sold well enough to justify a sequel, as there was alot that needed fixing. Fortunately, the actual gameplay wasn't one of those things.

    "... (and Linux friendly) OpenGL."

What the hell does this statement mean? Glide was the only way to get Unreal Tournament running on Linux at *all*. Glide has been on Linux since forever.

If anything, Glide has also been easier to set up and configure than Mesa/OpenGL is currently (I've spent the last week attempting to get XFree86 4.0.1 to talk to my GeForce2 GTS, and it's been a bit of a hassle, to say the least).

I think you're after the words "Open" or "Free", but only in a philosophical sense is OpenGL more "Linux Friendly" than Glide.

(Something that also factors into this equation, is that Glide is no longer supported under Linux on the Voodoo 4/5/6 - and it looks like it never will be. I bought the Voodoo5 5500 and returned it the next day in favour of the GeForce2 - the V5500 was a pain.)

Running an open standard in these days of hyperactive lawyers is a pain. One concern is that people adding new functionality to OpenGL (or even reviewing specifications for it) might sneak in some proprietary intellectual property. If this made it into the standard unchallenged, the owner could then reap a substantial windfall by suing anyone unlucky enough to implement it.
The way this problem is solved is to require anyone active in the ARB to sign an agreement stating that they'll simply disclose any proprietary interest they might have in features that are being considered for use in the API.

Wasn't this exactly how we wound up with RamBus? A quick summary from one of the comments on that story :

    1. Rambus joined JEDEC, a consortium of companies devoted to sharing R&D work and forming industry standards to keep costs down for everyone

    2. Rambus files for patents after joining the JEDEC, without disclosing the fact. These patents go directly against the industry standards the JEDEC is trying to establish.

    3. Rambus is now using this information learned at meetings to "extend and prosecute pending applications to target the latest industry standards proposed in these meetings."
