Most of my past Linux experiance has been silent because it had a hard time finding the various embeded on the motherboard sound cards. I tried the Live CD on several old machines I had and it found everything except the win-modem. I was impressed. It even runs on some of my old laptops and set the LCD for the proper resolution. For E-mail, IM, Web Browsing, letters, & such, a Linux PC works fine. I have one. For special apps and hardware, then find what will run it, and use it. Win 2K Pro will run the desk just fine. The laptop is portable and fits on the desk in the sound booth. There are reasons to run older versions of Windows. I have no reason to upgrade the OS. There is no reason to spend the bucks on a OS upgrade or the latest hardware. This is not a net attached machine.

First thing to hide is the list of all my CC's, expiration dates, phone numbers to call in case of theft, and the password used for each instead of mother's maiden name.

Second is past years Turbo Tax tax returns. Those are a gold mine for identity thieves including SSN DOB Dependants Property address etc. You bet that goes into encrypted storage.

3rd is Website log-ins. I visit Slashdot often enough to remember my password. The same is not true for my UBS account.

4th is a central repository of registered software including ID number and keys.

5th is a property inventory list including make model serial number date of purchase etc. You many not be interested in my laptop serial number, but I don't need anyone with an axe to grind listing it with the local police as stolen. Can you prove you own your laptop if someone else lists it as stolen? If it is stolen, can you provide a list including model, serial number for both police and insurance?

This is not a complete list.

Just a note. The drive is simply an off the shelf AT IDE drive. Nothing special. I don't think drive locking is used at all. I think this because if you make a second partition (pool in SimpleShare speak) and encrypt it, after a reboot the unencrypted share shows right up.
The shares in the encrypted partition do not mount until you visit the admin page and enter the encryption key. Then they also mount.

Read the Toms Networking review. It has a lot more details.

So what. I could care less they could unlock the drive. What I care about is the filesystem is still encrypted and remains that way even if they take the platters out later. This is not a drive lock. It is an encrypted file system.
You make a partition and encrypt the entire partition. SimpleShare uses the name pool for partition. Folders in the partition (pool) can not be mounted until the encryption key is entered. Entering the key does not decrypt the partition. It just allows mounting the encrypted partition and shares then appear on the lan as normal smb or NFS shares. Power failure = lost key. Partition is encrypted.
