Well it started out as an Optional Update. Then it became a Recommended Update. Next it will become a Critical Update. And finally an Unavoidable Update.
I would pay (a modest amount) for an unlocked boot loader. Otherwise, I vote with my dollars, locked boot loader is massive negative for me that has so far meant that samsung android devices are banned in my home. Right up there with missing sd slot.
You are right. The interesting issues were never tested, and now Oracle has corrected that. See, there's a purpose for every insect in the woods, even the roaches.
That was my first thought as well, however they already have control of your data on both ends (and blatantly violate your privacy) so this is no new issue. I tend to agree that this is at least partly about avoiding NSA surveillance, or at least, putting a toll booth on the surveillance. But the prime motivator no doubt is cost: why pay a premium to a carrier? Unless the carrier can somehow do the job more cost efficiently, a distinct possibility.
If you're not paying the monthly subscription fee, you're not a customer.
No, you're just another lab rat, continuously being tested to see how much pain you will endure before finally going postal and flushing the whole turd down the toilette.
Co-exists perfectly well with Gnome. Gnome apps run fine under KDE and vice versa. Select whether you want to boot Gnome or KDE (Plasma) at the login prompt.
if you peek under the hood at OS X, it is VASTLY more robust than ChromeOS, being a Certified UNIX and all
Ha ha ha, you're quite the joker. No Unix tool in better on OS/x than Linux and most are crappier... way crappier. Valgrind? Yes, Real Unix[tm] has it, the catch is, it doesn't work. The list of similar farces is long. Face it, these days Real Unix[tm] gets the sloppy seconds from Linux, it's been that way for, oh I don't know, 15 years now? More?
I am back to developing on Linux after a long stint on OS X and one thing I really miss now is the OS X Dashboard widgets.
Isn't that what KDE Plasma is supposed to do? Don't know, never tried it, and have nothing to compare it to. I use just the basics of KDE and find that perfectly ok.
I find these new adventures in controlling behaviour through fantastical intellectual property inventions deeply troublesome. Pfizer's moral concerns may indeed have merit, but in this case it seems to me that the end does not justify the means. If Pfizer wants to take a stand then they should should employ the means available to any other citizen. If Pfizer wants new law then they should argue for it with duly elected lawmakers, not presume to make the law themselves.
The idea has been floating around scientific minds for more than a decade
More than a decade? As I recall this was a major plot element of 2010, Odyssey Two, published in 1982. No doubt the idea originated considerably earlier. So, more than three decades at least.

then the Punitive Update
...succinctly encapsulates Oracle's outrage at the verdict
And succinctly encapsulates Oracle's past and ongoing stupidity.
Sounds more like a mental illness.
Maybe. A lucrative one that develops your mental muscles.
Blast from the past? Today we read online docs and stackoverflow.

Even when it means running with known security holes, widely exploited?
I think Oracle needs to change to a new company motto, like "Don't Be Evil!".
Needs to be adapted for Oracle: "Don't be a Scum Sucking Slimeball".
You are right. The interesting issues were never tested, and now Oracle has corrected that. See, there's a purpose for every insect in the woods, even the roaches.
Sometimes, juries do the right/sane thing
And equally, Oracle did the wrong thing as judged by their peers.

Somebody doesn't know their culture.
Resistant to Cylon cyberattack. It's a plan.

Human robots replaced by mechanical robots.
The big news here is, China's workforce isn't the low cost workforce any more. Now look to SE Asia and Indian subcontinent for that.
"Don't get busted". You heard it here first.
All french authorities are doing, are sending armed masked swat as if google was some sort of illegal business. Imagination is not their thing...
Imagination is clearly your thing, if you suppose that a swat team would be used for a white collar raid.
...international treaties mean they'll be abrogating their agreements...

Life support. Next step is, pull out the tubes.
He's on Ubuntu, which is all in on Gnome.

Downside is, you can only use web apps. Suppose a kid wants to use the excellent Krita and learn some real painting skills, just to name one.
