So I need to upgrade to quad core to get the performance I have now with no significant gain in functionality? It's nice to know what a real Vista platform requires, I just hope I don't get any significant new work that requires me getting a new box to do what I'm already doing on my current hardware.

I've been on the same box now for almost 3 years now. I no longer have a compelling need to upgrade every 18 months like I had in the past. But I am thinking of upgrading my Mac Mini to one of the new iMacs.

To echo some other posts, if somebody wanted guarantees, warrantability, etc... for some piece of code that I wrote, the cost, effort, and time would be increased by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude. There would be pages of stipulations about what precise hardware platform, OS, and other installed applications and services were running on the same machine. I would probably just go the 'appliance' route and lock down the box so that they could only make minimal changes to the environment. It can be done, but since I don't write life-critical/infrastructure-critical code, I can't see that the cost can be justified.

    3) Scripting languages. JavaScript, perl, and bash (or the equivalent).
    4) Prolog, forth, and/or Lisp. Think Differently.
