FWIW, if your Archos ever bites the dust (God forbid - it is a nice player), consider checking out the Xclef 500 - I'm getting one instead of an iPod because it's just a portable hard drive that doesn't use any drivers, and has a really good battery life without being $100 to replace like an iPod.

To do that, I'm willing to bite the bullet and spend $1750 or more on a new PC, whether it's a low-end PowerPC, or a more expensive PowerBook (when they finally come out).

In my experience with the most user-friendly Linux distros out there (Mandrake and Xandros), they still pailed in friendliness next to my experience with Windows 2000, and had more bugs or annoying "features" without enough upsides. This is *my* experience, not anyone else's, so Linuxistas, please don't take it personally.

Given that I won't be using Microsoft when I replace my current 5-year old PC in the next year, I'll be moving to OS X. It's not Microsoft, and it's a lot nicer than Linux. Of course, it also costs an arm and a leg, but c'est la vie.

    YMMV.

YOU can also ignore the data, and realize that the only reason AAC is popular is because the ITMS doesn't offer MP3's (encrypted or un-encrypted) for sale as an option. You can also ignore the data points that no audio CD players play AAC, no car systems play AAC, no players besides Apple and HP play AAC, and that if the iPod didn't also play MP3's, it would be the same sort of colossal failure that Sony ATRAC-only playing players have been.

IMO, it depends. When I was young, I got the chance to read Lee Iacocca's first book (it was OK), and it had a really interesting section in there about the government's $1 billion bailout of Chrysler in the late 1970's. Whether the government should have done it or not is debatable (in the end, Chrysler repaid the government in full before the loan was due), but Iacocca pointed out that if Chrysler had gone under, not only would tens of thousands of Chrysler employees lost their jobs, but thousands of other people would have been laid off too as Chrysler's entire supply chain would have suffered with its collapse.

Practically speaking, the Chrysler bailout cost taxpayers $1 billion in the short term, but given that it was repaid, taxpayers saved a ton on all the unemployment benefits, bankruptcies and other costs of unemployment which DIDN'T happen.
