  2. No, why NOT! on Guido Von Rossum on Python · · Score: 3
Ahhggg. This brings back horrible memories of huge FORTRAN that would be flattened by one *SPACE* out of wack. It's a pain. A real pain. It's the reason I won't even look at Python as a language for me.

Don't get get me wrong, attention to detail in programming is a good idea. Formatting your programs is very important. Spaces should not be. They are the void on the page. Various editors treat spaces, that is, it's harder to manage in some. It's just a shame that they put this 'feature' in a language.

  8. Precompiling your application on Linux -- Without Unix · · Score: 1
It seems that instead of compiling a program, you "precompile" it, but that is optional.
If your application source code gets long, or calls modules that are not precompiled in the PDEE, the application may get very long to start. If such a case, the clear solution is to precompile it, which means creating of kind of executable that will be fast loaded instead of recompiling everything each time the application is started. For most applications, this will not require to change anything in the source code of your application: only the command line used to start the application as to be extended."

  14. My experiences with outsourcing on What Pitfalls Exist When Outsourcing Code? · · Score: 1
For me, new projects that were completely seperate from other projects were good canidates for external programmers. They had new and interesting things in them. Few dependancies with existing projects and clean slate to work with. Of course, these were also the funnest projects for internal programmers because they were new projects that had lots of potential.

Other "grunt work" projects ususally include fixing bugs, minor feature improvements, documentation or taming some out of control project build on crappy code. There are things that can't be outsourced well. The learning curve is very steep, and usually someone internal will eventually have to relearn it when it comes back.

However, I believe one of the biggest issue is reuse of code libraries. If you already have a well defined set of libraries that you use, you'd have to share. Of course, you outsourcers may be able to provide you with their libraries if they are more experienced..
