It's them Easterners... they're the ones on the fancy hydro power. Natural gas and propane for us Westerners is a much more efficient way to heat our homes. The old oil furnaces would be getting to be more expensive these days.
O.o someone else who uses a Logitech USB Marble Mouse. I use this exclusively at work in order to cut down on RSI and the like. It's awesome, and the fact that anyone that comes to my desk can't seem to use it is a nice bonus.
At home I still use a laser mouse for gaming (RTS mostly; some FPS), as the trackball just wasn't good enough for me. Precise enough, but not quick enough for RTS movements, and I sucked in FPS's with it. I've tried several types of trackballs for gaming and at work, and the Marble Mouse is the best for me. Using your thumb and pinky for clicking and your other fingers (okay my ring finger does nothing!) to move the ball around is great for me.
And now I can get another one for $20 in case this one ever dies:-D Thanks for the link!
Actually, I noticed this a few weeks ago in Canada at FutureShop. I'm not sure when it was exactly, but Best Buy in Canada (same company now as far as I know) still carries some DLP's. When I asked a FutureShop salesman about why they stopped carrying DLP's, he said that they believed LCD's had 'won' the HDTV market and they were supporting them.
I personally think the new Sony XBR 1080p LCD sets have a fantastic picture, but the price tag in comparison to a similar sized DLP is a little bothersome.
And yes, the new LED bulbs in the DLP's should eliminate this bulb life problem entirely and cut down on the power usage dramatically.... which is what I'm waiting for as I still haven't seen the Samsung HL-S5679W for sale in Canada, nor have I seen anything from Toshiba using LED bulbs in their DLP TV's.
Walmart will do anything to drop their prices, and yet they don't care that ITMS is selling an inferior product. All they see is "ITMS is selling the same movie we are for a few bucks less!"... short-sighted morons...
Everything else (within reason) that Wal-Mart / Target sells is inferior (Apex DVD players - wtf? I guess there ARE people that like to buy a shiny new DVD player every six months), so why not give them another option:
Put a Disc in an envelope (like NetFlix or Zip.ca), with no bonus features, no deleted scenes or anything, a scaled-down quality (so it fits on a single layer and is cheaper to make) with stereo audio, and no artwork on it (other than maybe the envelope to 'sell' it), and then offer that @ Wal-Mart / Target for $10. Then they will technically have a better product than ITMS ('cuz you can bring the DVD to your friends house and play it in their DVD player too!), and will have it for the same price!
The rest of us geeks (those with a brain at least) will continue to go for higher quality movies, even if we have to pay more.
Total marketing, and definitely some cyberpenis enlargement. No other way to explain this product.
The only other way I can see it being viable is so that you can download your P2P pr0n, keep being a spambot and have the NIC do some gaming QoS for 'ya. Either that or you have a built-in NIC that's hogging your bus. There are some good built-in NIC's, but there's a lot of shitty ones too.
Still not worth even close to $280. $100 tops, and even then I'll still stick to just 'turning off' the other network stuff on my machine. D-Link's gaming router can help if you're not a Linux geek and want to stick something in to keep your sister from hogging the bandwidth. But to save yourself from hogging your own computer's bandwidth? Ugh.. I can't believe I'm even commenting on this story now that I think of it.
Hah, equal access sure - but how many of those complaining noobs don't care to read the latest forum posting or upcoming patch notes or whatever?! Most.
As for in-game cheats of things that "anyone" can do -- for the games I play, there are still many, and those that use them are the assholes that make the games no fun for people. You wonder why a lot of console gamers don't want to go online yet.. it's because of fuckheahds that have their 'fun' by abusing the latest bug or glitch or whatever to beat you senseless. Fun for them sure, but it just makes the so-called community that much smaller.
That's close. That's REALLY close, but not perfect. The concept of just one disc in the Xbox - good, if not great. However the online part really doesn't appeal to the people in question, and a monthly fee doesn't either. Having a disc full of like 10 or 100 games like these - or even simpler ones would be even better. I can understand the subscription model myself, but how about an offline disc full of a bunch of these games for $100 or something? $149 + $100 = $249 for a bunch of games on an Xbox? Now we're talking.
What I ended up doing in the meantime was literally installing Windows 3.1 with a crapload of old games on an old PC. This worked until the machine either died or they moved something around or messed up something to make it so that I had to come over and put it back the way it was. Sure Ghosting would be an option, but that doesn't save their high scores, and having another drive or an internet connection to save those scores wasn't an option.
So where can I get Hearts, Solitaire, Bejeweled, etc on a disc for a robust-console-like-PC or a console with no subscription fee or mandatory internet access? Does it exist?
So you have casual gamers, hardcore gamers and non-gamers all playing games. The hardcores want the latest and greatest stuff and are generally satisfied. The casual gamers can usually pick up a console game and most PC games and be happy. The non-gamers that use their PC for solitaire or bejeweled -- why aren't these games on a console?
I personally have had enough of fixing people's PC's that are used for online games like Bejeweled. These are the people that mess up their PC's with spyware and adware quite a bit. So where the heck is the relatively cheap console that plays Bejeweled for $20 and Solitaire for $10 ? It doesn't exist as far as I know... Knoppix or some bootable distro with a bunch of games you say? Well I either haven't found the right distro or I'm just looking in the wrong place. Someone please - do enlighten. I want to put something together, or find something that my Uncle or Mom can sit down and play with for 45 minutes or 2 hours before the kids get home.
There are those 'geeks' that don't play video games. But you don't hear me calling them a geek. They're the wanna-be geeks that do it for a job and can't be bothered to play a video game. Exceptions taken of course, but that's just my opinion.
A month? This card was announced at QuakeCon in the middle of August! That's a paper release of 3 months! The PCIe cards came out like a month ago, but I've been really waiting for this card for quite some time..
come to think of it - probably since the 6800 was announced in like April or May! And now.. it's finally here! Happy Early Christmas to me:-)
Ya, she's a little 'cute', but nothing like the girls on the actual 'bachelor' shows! And he's wearing a tie.. come on - you know he just asked for her number and took the Playstation!
Now here's hoping that a 6200 outperforms a 5700 and is priced the same as the current 5200's!! If so, count me in (if it will run Doom ]|[ at more than 4FPS)
Somebody's not happy with their marketing technigues.
I said that the 5200 would come to the ultra-cheap category, and I believe that (depends what you consider ultra-cheap, however). When the 6200 (or whatever low-end number it is) comes out, they will be trying to get rid of the 5200's and they will be ultra-cheap. Of course you don't see the price of other decent cards coming down right away, but that's because people (like you apparently) still WANT them! So yes, they will silently dissappear, but only because the new low end cards are good enough.
Think about it - would you as a company still want to produce the old cards? No. Does a 5200 outperform a GeForce 3 - yep. The only bad thing about the 5200's or MX cards (however they spin it) is the slower memory and less pipelines, etc. They're not good for nothing as you claim. Personally with the GeForce 2 I have at home, it's way worse than the 5200's I play with, yet goes for about the same price on eBay.
As for the P3's - ya - they were sought out because they ran hella' cool and were good cards. I'd take a P3 1G over a Celeron 2G almost any day... not any day now though - I'm addicted to hyperthreading!... and yes - the new cards are indeed faster still. Just because the 6800 has a slightly slower core doesn't mean it's slower. It's got so many friggin' transisters that it can't go much faster without heating up!.. which is my biggest problem with the high end cards <sigh>.. regardless - we're at their mercy, but do influence their marketing with out buying preferences. You still want a GF3 or GF4 - go nutz.. I'll probably be happy enough with the mid to lower end version of the 6800.
... and hence why I've reverted back to being an Intel fan-boy for the sheer quietness and lower heat dissapation. The rear fan on mine runs hella' slow and I quite like it. Sorry to hear that the Athlon and PVR are messing that up for you:-(
You did plug the rear case fan into the 'fan only' power plug, right? If not, yes - the rear fan is loud. If you did, then the rear fan is pretty quiet.
The rubber mounts only do some good for hard drives and such that really vibrate. Most newer ones don't seem to have that problem anymore.
Shiny Shiny!
I am still pretty happy with my sonata - the other computers near it have needed quietening just to try and compete now.
Mod this guy up! I've been trying to get this across to people for years, and nobody will listen. I know people that still think a GeForce 2 is good enough for them, at like $80 or so when a GeForce FX 5200 is like $20 more and outperforms the old GF2 by leaps and bounds. Even if the 5200 is an entry level gaming card. Although once the 6800's are out for a bit, it'll drop to the ultra-cheap category. Is that so hard to understand?! Yes, NEW Ultra cards are going go be like $500 or $600.. ALWAYS!
You must be exaggerating at least a little bit there. 2 full minutes? I just upgraded to a 2.4GHz machine and from power button to 0% CPU usage is under a minute by far. And yes, that is with almost a dozen icons in the system tray.
I'm not praising Windoze by any means, but I am saying that it doesn't take THAT long. Frick, sometimes dialing up to an ISP and getting a connection can take almost a minute...

I swear reading most of these ask slashdot's are slowly killing me from the inside out.
e =CTLG&category_name=CTLG_009_001_003_000&product_i d=61-2755 , but if you want ONE DC converter with various voltages, you're just asking for trouble. An eyesore they may be, but they're quite safe for the most part and do their job properly.
If you're pissed that a block takes up like 3 ports on a surge protector, get a short extension cord like this: http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog_nam

Uhh ya. 1/40sec == 25ms. 25ms monitors are 'ok' for gaming from my perspective, but until I can afford a 16ms or less LCD, I'll stick with my 19" CRT.
Just like they called it the 'PlayStation', followed by PSone, this is the 'PlayStation 2', followed by the PStwo. Simple enough.
I guess they just don't 'support' anything less than Windows 2000. No biggie..
*looks at the box for Doom 3*
Doesn't support Windoze 98. Win 2k/XP only.
