  1. Re:Don't buy music online. on The Perfect Online Music Store? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I don't think your local store has hundreds of thousands CDs. Usually, they stock only novelties and popular artists.

Of course, you can back order through them but then you will have to go twice to the store. Why not buy online then.

I am using opera right now on an old computer. It has some key features for me :

    1. small download size 3-4 MB without java
    2. small memory footprint, nice for old computers
    3. built-in email client, again nice for old computers as you don't need to load another program
    4. keyboard shortcuts : everything can be binded to any key
    5. many useful tools like notes taking etc.

In fact, it has *more* tools than firefox/mozilla .

Given the fact that almost no one used it when it was released, I doubt it still runs on someone computer at this time.

I disagree, many computers simply can't be upgraded or they will run so slowly and swap so madly to the hard drive that it will drive the user nuts. Have you ever try to run XP on 64 megs of RAM ?

This is even more true when you consider that you also have to upgrade the applications and that is sometimes enough to put your computer to its limits.

The possible exception is with linux where you can upgrade the kernel only and have the latest drivers on an old machine.

  19. two kinds of population/emails on One Third of Email Now Spam · · Score: 1

I think there are two kinds of population or, more precisely, email addresses : those who are on spam lists and those who aren't.

The first receive little or no spam, little is when they give out their email to a corporation that resells it or when their email is discovered through brute force guessing. For that category, spam is one message in a while.

The second have, in some way, published their email on the internet. Their adress has been catched by spammers at some time. They will receive more and more spam as their email "circulate" among spammers. After a few months, it will get to more than 100 messages a day which is more than 1 third of the legitimate messages unless you receive a lot of messages.

So, if you publish your email on the net, don't complain about spam, it's too late.

If you want to try what you describe, go to Germany where many highways are not limited in speed.

Highways are very secure compared to the other kinds of traffics. A european report (http://www1.oecd.org/publications/e-book/7503013E .PDF page 21) shows that in Germany, 31 percent of the traffic is on highways but ONLY 8 percent of casualties (12 percent of deaths) occur on highways !!! In Germany where you can speed on highway.
