You ask : How do I test it ?

Simple, ask the people who suffered from depression or people who deal with them.

My experience and the current practices on the subject of depression lead to two comments about your theory :

First, depression is generally caused by unconscious thinkings that come from the past (recent or not) and that you cannot consciously deal with. That's the reason it is advised to talk with a psy. It is important to understand what's happening and so, to think deeply.

Secondly, in a situation of crisis, thinking deeply only shows how bad the situation is (if it is) or can be (if you are depressed, you see things more bad than they are). At that point, it's better not to think.

Conclusion : avoiding to think (about one's situation) can be easier but only postpones the real solution of the problems and make it harder to solve.

The fact that depression is not socially accepted leads people to hide it and therefore to make it longer to get out of.

    Animated splash screens for LILO

    Introduction

Since mid-2001, most Linux distributions include some patched versions of LILO (the LInux LOader) that support VGA or VESA graphical modes and make it possible to have a nice background image while booting. Starting with SuSE Linux 7.2, the SuSE distribution includes an interesting extension to LILO that allows a programmer to define some callback functions that are triggered when some events occur (key pressed, timeout, ...). It gives a much greater flexibility than the other extensions that are provided by most of the other Linux distributions, including the new graphical modes that have recently been added to the official version of LILO 22.x.

While testing the SuSE version of LILO and the helper program mkbootmsg, I was wondering if the timer callbacks together with the function that copies parts of the image to the screen could be used for creating animations. I quickly found out that it was indeed possible to enhance the boot screen with animations. Since my friends liked the results, I decided to share them on this web site.

These animated boot screens have been tested with SuSE Linux 7.2 and 7.3. They should also work with other Linux distributions, as long as you install the appropriate version of LILO. This is explained on my help page.

    Why?
Several people told me that LILO was not designed to do this kind of things and asked me why I did this. So here are some reasons: because LILO was not designed to do this kind of things, because it is fun, because some people like to waste their time looking at pretty animations when their computer is booting.

Of course, these boot screens will not be so useful for those who keep their Linux server running for several months without rebooting (some of my servers have been running for more than a year). But these animations were not designed for these servers: they are more interesting for desktop computers that are rebooted from time to time. I created the first boot screens for a laptop that I boot and shut down at least once a day.

    Copyright

I am releasing these animated boot screens under the GNU General Public License (GPL), version 2 or later (at your option).

This means that you are allowed to use, modify, copy and distribute them freely. You can even sell your own version if you want. But if you distribute them to others, then you must also distribute the source code for these boot screens. In this case, the "source code" ("the preferred form of the work for making modifications to it") means the configuration file(s) and the source of the image(s), including all layers and masks if applicable. It should be possible for those who get the source code to modify the animation easily, so distributing only the final PCX image is usually not sufficient because that would not be the the preferred form for making modifications to the image (unless you worked only on that bitmap file and painted it pixel by pixel, but then I pity you).

For more details, see the full text of the GPL (also available in HTML version from www.gnu.org).

The truly successful technologies and technology companies are utilitarian and dull -- decidedly non-hip

I think it depends on the price range of a product and the cost of making it cool. Wireless phones, for example, can be cool at interesting prices. That's why nokia is number one : people prefer nokia phones because of the design at the same cost than dull phones.

On the other hand, a cool car or a cool house can be much more expensive than standard ones.

Computers are just a little too expensive for people to buy cool ones. But that can change, if IBM and Dell can make design computers at cheap prices, people will buy them. It's only an industrial challenge like in the car industry. Twenty years ago, the cars were utilitarian and dull. Now, even the cheapests cars are somehow cool.

We'll see in two or three years how computers will be.

I disagree. How many business companies are there in the world ? If all of them send you an email for advertising, will you take the time to unsuscribe a few million times ? And if they are really nasty, they can even make the unsubscribe process a bit complicated or long.

So the basic question to ask is not who can send you an email but how did they get your email ?. It's a matter of privacy. If you give your email to one company, they should be prevented by law to give or sell your private records except if you authorize it.

Furthermore, you should have the right to see and edit your records for any company that have anything about you. I don't know for the US but, in Belgium, that's the way it works and I am happy with it.

Instead of spamming lots of people, those who are interested in giving someone employment would search a database of resumes. It's much more effective for everyone.

Do you know that spontaneous job applications are common practice ? They are appreciated by many companies and human resources managers who read them and put them in a database even if the company has no job available at the time of reading. Later, if a position needs someone, they usually look first in this database before posting ads or other means of asking for candidates.

I read somewhere that spontaneous job applications account for 50 percent of some hiring.

Of course, the person looking for a job should research the company he is sollicitating and customizing any email he sends. But opt-in only for job sollicitations is not appropriate and even human resources managers would not like it.
