Windows Media Encoder 8 (in beta) has similar claims, and I have to admit they're pretty close. MS has some demos up. Being able to stream audio at an acceptable quality on my dial-up rocks:)
If the average consumer goes to a store and sees a Compaq computer that says "40GB hard drive, CPRM compliant!" they're not going to say "uh oh, it's that evil CPRM, I'll go elsewhere." They're going to see yet another fancy acronym and assume that it is somehow good because fancy acronyms make something more advanced.
It's like renting out a house or appartement. Once the contract is signed, and you're a tenant, the owner is not even allowed to enter the rented space without your express permission, at least under Dutch law.
Whoa, here in the US, technically the owner of the complex can enter an apartment at any time he/she wants, as long as it's between (IIRC) hours like 8 AM to 5 PM.:)
This PCI-card approach was also tried with the Sega Saturn i believe, but i don't think anyone actually bought the thing.
This thing failed not only because of the reasons you mentioned, but also because you needed seperate ported versions of the games. You couldn't just find any old Saturn game and play it on your PC, even with the [Matrox, BTW] card installed.
And with the rumors of Sega licensing off the DreamCast design, the possibility of this happening all over again isn't all that far-fetched.
This review was supposedly posted on 8/31/00, yet they're using an outdated version of Opera. Seems odd, since 4.0x has been out for quite awhile...not only that, but the current versions offer significant improvements over older ones. And 200MB? Even if that was a typo (20MB), my Opera dir is still 10MB.
What puzzles me more is their love for iCab. Okay, there's only partial Javascript support. Plug-ins don't always work. It can't send mail, and it's only available on the Mac. But look! It's got an elaborate Preferences menu! Blah.
Who needs games that require a supercomputer to process, when the gameplay is lacking. With MAME and my ROM collection, I can keep my gaming urges satisfied for years to come:-)
Don't put away that supercomputer just yet - MAME needs a pretty high-end system to run some of its games at a decent speed.
I thought the Slashdot readership (regardless of intelligence level) was generally opposed to wanton commercialization. Now we're talking about commercializing QUANTUM COMPUTERS? Get off it already.
Then why isn't it being developed by the government? Why IBM?
If you have a region-free DVD player, you can already get CTHD on DVD - the region 3 version has been out for a few months.

...but it seems similar in conception to Usenet.
Should he have used a semicolon?
People who have a registered version of Opera 4.x don't see any ads when they install/upgrade to the new Opera 5.
Slashdotted already. Any mirrors?
...it gets better? I'm in high school now, and I'm constantly being told that it gets worse.

For states that have the graduated licensing system, it's 17.
Too late - I've already burned up one of my hard drives by trying to download the entire internet.
They were really saying "Boo-urns"!
Imagine a beowulf cluster of those!

Stealing?? Was something stolen? Is something missing from DVD CCA's building?
Much like the MP3 thing - you download an MP3, and people say it's stealing...but is something that was at a Sony building suddenly gone?
...they didn't mention Mission to Mars. That was by far the biggest crock of shit I've ever seen.
The RTS will get a new boost when Black and White, and Sacrifice come out.
:)
Shame on you, you forgot Warcraft 3

Try loading the page in Opera. That's some weird shit.
It doesn't exist.
