Wow, you are kinda new to the whole idea of "Free software" aren't you? That and paragraph breaks. And reality.
You DO know that MS can simply READ the source code for Firefox, just like the rest of us? And come out with their own version (according to the license) without inviting anyone? And they have IE7 and don't want to?
And wtf exactly is a "M$ edition of Firefox"? Is this like Firefox, but it runs on Microsoft operating systems, like Firefox does now?
How do you claim better support for Firefox? Firefox is the CLIENT, it is supposed to support the protocols, not the other way around, right?
"a quality browser that supports m$ locked in content". Isn't that IE6/7, and not Firefox?
Seriously, I am saying this with love: Switch to decaf.
I tire quickly of paging through 200 items for the 2 or 3 listings that I'm looking for.
Exactly! Ebay IS allowing people to put garbage in catagories it doesn't belong. If I am looking for engine parts, I don't need to see auctions for antique books and memorabilia that is remotely connected to the brand of car that I am trying to find parts for. This is one area I agree that ebay has fallen down, by diluting their catagories so that it is harder to find what you are actually looking for.
Another example is the deception in the title. Try seaching for a "Fender Telecaster" and see how many auctions you get with the phrase "not Fender" or "like Fender" in the topic, where the guitar is obviously NOT a Fender, and the topic is simply misleading to get more traffic. This should be made against the rules, with a penalty. You might find 200 items, and over half are NOT "Fender Telecaster" related on any given day. Or someone selling stick-pins that "look" like Fender guitars (see above paragraph...)
the fact that sellers need to list something multiple times now on average is a bloody good signal that there's massive oversupply in that market
or their asking price is simply too high based on simple supply/demand. Capitalism works and is quite simple: If supply rises higher than demand, the price will go down or you won't sell anything.
After all, isn't that why people BUY on ebay, to save money? The sheer volume of people who are trying to sell new goods for the exact same price (or higher) than I can buy on NewEgg or other sites is amazing. Same for used goods, where sellers are reserving the price at 80%-90% of new price. The market is simply catching up and normalizing.
We have been selling on ebay since 1998, and have seen and dealt with all the problems, fixes, etc. in real time, but when it comes right down to it: If you have a widget for sale, don't expect to get more for the widget than the current market value. Management can't do anything about market forces, they can only make sure the site always works, is easy to use, and everyone has a fair shake at displaying their wares.
Getting pissed because a game that sells for $10 at EB will only bring $10 on ebay is rather silly.
They add more the show, bring in three new exceptional talents (Ben, Beau and Claudia), and I finally get my wife to enjoy SciFi so it is something we can watch together, and they cancel the show.
I had thought the last year.5 had introduced some new blood and ideas into the show, after I quit watching it in Season 7. Surely I can't be the only one who thinks the show had taken a turn for the better, fresher, while still being true to the original concept.
My bet is insane, since the CTO is the top of that particular food chain, and I really doubt the CTO has to get permission to do her actual job.

Or the Privacy Act of 1974, the most used and quoted privacy act in US history.
People confuse the 4th Amendment with the "right of privacy", when it is a very limited grant of privacy, that the government has to have a warrant to search through documents you have chosen to keep private in your own home, or the home itself.
The courts have constantly held that what you THROW AWAY or do in public (ie: speak), or do in your own home but in the plain view of the public (through an uncovered window) has no expectation of privacy. Using a search engine is accessing in the public and subject to their Terms of Use, and is not "private" in the traditional sense.
Just as if you dialed 411/information and asked them for a number "for a gunshop so I can kill me wife". A search engine is just a digital 411 in this respect, except they log the question instead of someone "listening". You can't expect privacy when accessing a publicly available service.
Real world case: Texas DA needed DNA to prove a case against a guy, but not enough evidence to get a warrant. They follow him, he spits on the sidewalk, they literally sample it an run DNA, get a match, which is used to obtain a warrant and get a sample from blood, which is used to tie him to a crime. He appeals, it is held up as he should not have an expectation of privacy for something he "throws away" in public.
Please excuse me for being thick headed, but what is AC? Other than Alternating Current.

The way you just posted. Anonymously. It is a commonly used expression here, and even on other websites that/. regulars visit. (ie: Groklaw, digg, etc.)
Valve has been doing something like this for some time, but differently. By keeping their SDK opened up (and developing TFC soley using the public SDK) they encouraged independent content. DoD was indy at one time, as were most of the titles that now run on the HL1 or Steam/Source engine. The good stuff, they buy up or invest further in, turning "ok free mods" into "really good $10/$20 games".
I own many of the titles, and the game play is very different. There is a little "sameness" in some titles (CS/TFC/HL) but this is mainly just consistancy, not generic blandness. The content is different as is the overall gameplay. Then again, HL1 itself was a licensed engine from Quake.
So you can develop some unique games on the same platform. EA will probably do it closed. Valve does it fairly open. The public will decide who does it better.
Why would not posting for half an hour mean I'm using a firewall? I mean, yes I am using a firewall, but why should that even be an issue? This is ridiculous.
The main issue is you are AC, and Slashdot doesn't want AC to post every 10 or 20 minutes, a very good change. Since they changed this rule, the quality of posts as AC has gone up considerably. Also, it appears some IPs can post more often as AC than others, or perhaps there is a randomness to the wait period.
The firewall issue should actually say a firewall/router (or proxy), which would make a big difference if others behind the same firewall/router are posting as AC, since it limits AC by IP address, the only thing it CAN filter by if you are AC.
More importantly, we can start queing the "It's bacause of all those SUV's in America". I'm not sure how, but surely someone will be able to find a way to link it...
Forte Agent Newsreader, argueably the best USENET reader of all time for WinTel, has always released exceptional "crippleware".
Free Agent is the free version, a good basic USENET and email client. Agent is the advanced version with all the buttons and whistles. I used Free Agent for 1 year, paid for Agent, and years later paid for an upgrade to version 2.0, all while using it on Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 2k, XP, fully supported.
Their "crippled" version just has much less features (uuencode/decode/mime on the fly, etc.) but is still a good enough if you don't d/l binaries.
Not all crippleware is junk. I have installed Free Agent on many a computer for friends who wanted a simple and more virus safe way to get TEXT ONLY email via pop3. And it is free, forever, for personal use.
Also bought alot of shareware door games when I ran the BBS, but that is another story.
Offer the software for free for personal use, but require a fee for non-personal use.
That is incompatible with the GPL, and much of the really good Free (as in speech or beer) softare is GPL. If you are building on a GPL program, or using many GPL libraries, you legally can not do that as an author because you are taking away the user's rights.
With Digg, you get rumours and bad comments. With Slashdot, you usually get the facts with some intellegent comments. Sometimes two or three times in the same week, just in case you missed it the first time....
A source? Yes, I used to work in radio AND in night clubs. Night Clubs pay according to how many 'seats' they have, quarterly. I forget the way radio stations pay, likely by Arbitron rating.
The 'radio stations getting paid to play music' happens, but it is illegal, it is called 'payola'. You should be able to google that.
and no I'm not trolling, just read what some of these groups have to say.
I have. And I agree with you. And not posting as AC. (I got nothing to hide, and karma to burn, but no mod points today for a change.)
Many in the leftist movements DO believe in the theoretical purpose of their causes. But not the leadership. A careful reading of what they actually SAY makes it clear that many ARE simply anti-capitalist, self-loathing, and do want to blame America first, even when it isn't our fault.
What I found more ironic is that they changed the GPL, a license designed for FREEDOM, yet if you READ the last of the first paragraph of it, it clearly states:
Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim copies of this license document, but changing it is not allowed.
So they infringed on the copyright of the GPL document itself to make a modified version of the GPL, a license that doesn't allow changes to itself, but is designed to license software that protects your right to change the software...(hold on, feeling an infinite loop coming on)...so they can claim their software is Free (which it isn't) and feel good about themselves.
Saying "I hate war" is about as courageous as saying "I hate child molesters". It really doesn't require any action, but it makes some people feel good to go out on the limb and "make that stand".
Radio stations, like night clubs, pay royalties to play music. That is the whole purpose of BMI and ASCAP. It is a bit too complicated to explain in a single post, but a huge amount of money is gathered from all businesses who play music in the background as well, to both the performing artist and the author of the song.
Correct. Remember, without quality control, quality might get out of hand.
She loves Firefly. Can't wait for season 2...oh wait.... ;)

Were they bored and need a good laugh or is it a profit makeing effort?
No one takes out a full page ad "for a good laugh". For that matter, everything that everyone does is always for money.
And when someone says "No, I don't just do it for the money", then you KNOW they are REALLY just doing it for the money, and they are a liar to boot.

I wonder how long until it comes back carrying half the solar system with it looking for it's maker?
Or gets to the end where the gorilla throws barrels at you.
Fascinating that he was able to use Voyager 1 to host his site...
That would explain the 30 year ping times.
Try adjusting your threshold up then. I read at 0 or -1, but you can set it to +3 and get some pretty good gold, with much less garbage.

It was ABOUT Slashdot, not ON Slashdot. otherwise there would have been the obligatory dupe, listing them twice.
