If I was a guard, and I saw someone coming through the line with a clear liquid that *could* be an explosive substance, I would just ask the person carrying said item to take a big swig of the liquid. I would watch his/her facial expression for signs of pain/discomfort. If they look normal, they can carry on.
And it's not like the military would start bombing DC with their own bombs - they aren't exactly good at aiming those things. They wouldn't be able to get a whack of tanks/APC's/etc there really quickly either. They also wouldn't be using warships. Fighter planes are pretty hard to fight with in a big city.
If you can win the soldiers, then you win the war. The police don't count, they won't have enough firepower to hold back the revolution. It would be smart of them to just stay out of it.
I would vote for it too. The laws don't do anything to prevent the crimes. The laws simply screw over peoples records, or give them jail time, etc for using the drugs. Laws do nothing to prevent the drugs, they simply make the problems worse. If you legalize cocaine/meth, etc, It's not going to bring more of it into the country, you'll just see the jails start to thin out. More people will be able to work because they aren't sitting in a jail, and tax payers have more money due to not paying so much for criminals in jail. Sounds good to me.
if it did exist in humans, then it would have been scientifically observed by now
There are many things which exist that have not been scientifically observed by now.
There were many things that existed, that people did not understand, until they were "scientifically observed."
Just because something exists, does not mean that it is instantly observered. If that were the case, then knowledge would have just appeared, and we wouldn't have been piecing things together one bit at a time.
Telepathy could be a latent ability that many do not have. Maybe people don't notice it because their minds are racing all the time.
When your sitting in a large group of people, have you ever thought if the thoughts you were hearing were your own, or someone elses? Have you ever had thoughts which didn't seem to be your own?
I had a "telepathic" (1-way, not 2-way) just the other day, I will explain:
I was driving with a friend in his Nissan X-Terra, and we hadn't said a word in about 10 minutes, so we were just sitting silent. All of the sudden I had the thought "Damn, I need to get into work really quick, how much time do I have." After a couple of seconds, I started to think "What the hell, I don't work today, its Saturday." At that moment, I saw my friend look down at his watch, and I sort of laughed. He said "What are you laughing at?" I replied, "Oh, I'm, just reading your thoughts..." Of course, he replies "What the hell are you talking about?" I said "Do you have to get to work?" He said "Yes, how did you know?" I said "You were checking your watch, while thinking "Damn, I need to get to work really quick, how much time do I have?" - he said "WTF?! how did you know that?"
Who knows why I "heard" is thoughts, but what I said freaked him out right away. I observed his thoughts, and I observed myself observing his thoughts. Not "scientific" in the slightest, but good enough for me not to write off the possibility of telepathic communication.
Note: I had *no* prior knowledge of my friend needing to go to the office. He only works during the week, so its completely out of place that he would have to go to the office on a Saturday.
I have this same sort of thing with my ex-girlfriend. I won't have spoken to her in months - all I have to do is think about her for a few minutes, and picture her in my head. She will call.
I was doing this one day, and she didn't call. I tried it the next day, no call again. On the third day, I tried it again. She phoned and said, "...for the last couple of days, I've had this strong urge to call you, but I've been so busy, I couldn't get a chance until today! Were you thinking about me again?"
So, was she thinking about me, which caused me to think about her before she called? Was I the one that started the thought between us? Was it some other connection that we both played an equal part in? I don't know. Perhaps its just a "coincidence," though I'm not sure I believe in those.
Excuse me, why is it unreasonable? Its a pretty big violation to enter someone's home uninvited; the honest truth is that you don't know why the trespasser is there, and I'd rather err on the side of my safety than his.
Obviously you can do/say/feel however you want, but this is my opinion:
If someone is in my home, or on my property, I wouldn't just go and shoot them. I actually have to be in imminent danger in order to shoot someone (and even then it would be a tough call).
If someone is in my home, I may threaten them, or fire a warning shot, or pick up something and throw it at them first, but I wouldn't just shoot because I'm scared. I generally relate your type of behaviour to Americans (from the USA), but I realize that many people follow your line of thinking. This is called fear, and the general excitement that Americans (again, only because I'm exposed to the American way of life on a daily basis) seem to get from exercising their rights.
Say someone was REALLY down on their luck - maybe they got robbed, or injured, or some other terrible thing happened to them, and they needed to get inside a house to call for help - you being the extremely fearful person that you are, would kill them without thought. I, on the other hand, would be on my guard, but would attept to communicate with them first. I would offer to help them if they needed it. If someone is desperate enough to break into a house in order to get money for much needed food/clothing, etc, I would offer them money, or help them in whichever way I could. I could come up with many examples as to why someone would be in a house they shouldn't be in. In many cases, you don't need physical force, and you definitely don't need to kill to resolve the situation.
My point is that unless I know why they are in my house, and what their intention is, I'm not going to use force against them. There is no point in using force at that point. I only use force if absolutely necessary, not just because I can.
What I find distribuing that you think its no big deal for someone to walk into (or break into) some one else's home.
This is because I'm not afraid of everything. I understand that sometimes there are circumstances that may occur that are out of the ordinary, but not necessarily life-threatening. I understand that situations can appear to be dangerous, but in actuality, are not dangerous at all. Fear tends to make you think that situations are more dangerous than they actually are.
When was the last time you paid, or were paid $5000 to find out what was wrong with a PC, and then wipe it?
How is $5000 reasonable at all?
Someone needs to go through the logs on each PC - ok, lets give them 10 hours @ $75/hr to do that. That's $750.
Now someone needs to wipe/reinstall the PC - we'll give them 5 hours for that @ $75/hr. That's $375.
Add them up - that's $1125.
That is for 15 hours of dealing which each PC. Yes, this doesn't include lost work, but its not hard to copy some Word/Excel/etc to your backup drive and then wipe Windows.
Oh, and BTW.. in the U.S. if you break into my home, I'm allowed to shoot you.. even if you are just taking a look around. I think that is reasonable (I have no idea why you're there anyway.. why the hell are you on my property?)
That's ridiculous. Yes, you have the right to shoot someone, but for you to find it reasonable to shoot someone because they were looking through you things is disturbing at best.
"Hey, I don't know why your here *BANG*" "Oh, you were lost, or confused, or metally challenged and happened to be on my property. Sorry about that, but I AM a US citizen after all. I have the RIGHT!"
Here is the link that explains where Winnie actually came from. I used to live in the town where Winnie was purchased and named. A few years back, they erected a big Winnie the Pooh statue. Check This link.
By comparison, 500 GHz is more than 250 times faster than today's cell phones, which typically operate at approximately 2 GHz, according to the organizations.
Wow, I didn't realize that cell phones typically run at 2GHz+
How about talking to someone in person? Does that allow you to hide your age? She says MySpace should have protected her by age verification, etc. SHE MET THE GUY FACE TO FACE. She then wen't out with him, had dinner, etc. So, she is suing MySpace for not verifying age, yet she couldn't verify his age herself, MEETING FACE TO FACE. How is this the fault of MySpace again?
If they meet on MySpace, that's one thing, but if they want to go and meet in person, no website in the world is responsible for that.
There is another issue with the approach you suggest. If Google decides that javapage.htm is the end all be all of JAVA knowledge, and removes all other listings from their database - then everyone and their grandmother will be fed information from this one source. That will ultimately reduce the effectiveness of Google to return valid responses to people who do not use search like a robot.
You could just thread the result. If you did a search for a certain java class, and it turned out a whack of pages with the same content, why not just thread the rest underneath. This way you could quickly see that these 40 results are all from the offical Java manual, but they only take up one line on your main search result page.
so1o has some crazy ideas, but he's not an idiot. Just because he broke into some poorly secured computers does not mean he isn't a hacker. It doesn't mean he is not capable of breaking into well-secured boxes. I wouldn't want to be extradited to the US either. I don't trust the US Gov't *at all.* The time they are seeking is ridiculous. 70 yrs is insane. Either so1o did some things that aren't mentioned, or they are trying to make an example of him. If they are trying to set an example, then they should be put in jail for unfair and unjust treatment.
so1o is a nice guy, and I hate to see this happen to him. Yes, he committed a crime, so yes, I suppose he should be punished, but I don't think 70yrs in jail is going to help the situation at all. Perhaps the US Gov't should request that he works for them and helps them with their security - he doesn't deserve to be with rapists and murderers, as he is not a danger to the public. Fine him some realistic amount of money and ban him from internet access or something...
I just hope the UK can come up with a fair and just way of dealing with the situation - I'm pretty sure everyone knows that the USA cannot.
I don't, and I'm a sysadmin for an ISP. We're not a huge ISP by any means, but I *will not* filter internet traffic. If your paying my company for 3Mbit, then you can use 3Mbit.
Only IPs from the United States can watch these movies. I actually pay for ABC on my TV, and I can't watch these. Doesn't anyone think of the canucks????:P
I have been out of highschool for about 6 yrs. When I was in the 10th grade, I decided to take the 10th grade computer course for the first semester, and the 11th grade course the second semester. The 10th grade "programming" course was HTML, but the 11th grade was supposed to be BASIC and C. As the semesters changed, they put through a new "Internet Media" test course, which replaced the programming course that I had signed up for. What was this new course? HTML, scanning images, recording sounds, etc. All the "programming" was the same HTML that I had just finished doing in the 10th grade course. I was not impressed. They phased out all BASIC and C programming years ago - now its like TFA says - Word, Excel, Web Design. What the highschools didn't realize at that time is that kids in MUCH lower grades were doing the SAME course. My sister, who was in the 8th grade, was doing the same HTML that the 10/11's were doing.
Yup, so basically the USA is fucking over their kids. Everyday your making your kids work harder, but you don't care because you'll be dead before the shit really hits the fan. I am in total agreement with the Grandparent - let a few generations live some harder times in exchange for a brighter future - that's what our great grandparents, etc did. That's how the economy took off. The problems are many - I don't think the USA is capable of lowering its standard of living. Truely I don't. There are too many hardcore consumers, too much marketing, too many people who feel they need to have that new shiny thing. Like the Parent says, your debt is rising at an astonishing rate. If you don't stop now, it will get worse - but that's hard isn't it? Letting life get harder is actually easier to do, so you do it. Wait 50 yrs when your actually working for China. When China brings all its plants over to the USA and utilizes the USA cheap labour to pay back the debts that you and your children will owe.
Yeah, a little dramatic, but I wouln't rule it out;)
Yes, they do make almost everything "we" consume. It doesn't have to be that way though. Just stop shopping at Walmart, and start keeping more of the money in your country instead of shipping it all overseas in return for a consumer good. Get something for your investment.
China has MADE your Economy. Your standard of living would be nowhere without China. Break out that mirror and hold it infront of your government.
If you would make stuff that the Chinese wants, then they might import more stuff from you. They are not nearly as much of a consumer country as the US of A. They don't want to import cheap PCs, badly made cars, little American flags, etc. They want to save money for the future. The USA wants to buy as much crap as it can consume and f*ck the future - spend now, worry later!. China makes the crap that you guys want. You don't make anything that China wants. See the problem?
Dude, they will let people compete fairly in their market when the feel like it (the USA is no better). It's not like the USA has to buy everything from China either. Your choosing to do it. If people would open up more factories and crank out consumer goods in the States, then you could buy these things locally. You don't have cheap labour because everyone in the USA thinks they deserve 2 cars and a huge house. If people would stop living beyond their means, make less money, and localize the economy, then China wouldn't have this hold over you. Because the USA is the largest consumer country in the world, and you won't make the stuff at home, every other country gets rich off of the USA. China is making you poor because you give them money for consumer goods that only last a few years - and you've been doing it for a long time. I assume that the Chinese won't want to buy a bunch of junk from you, so you'll have to come up with something China actually wants. You probably won't be selling them technology goods because, as you say, they can do it cheaper anyway. Try the swig test!
Perhaps this will help you all...

Exactly.

Yeah well I didn't know anything about this - not that it matters, but it is interesting to me.
Just because you've heard about some topic, even if it was many years ago, doesn't mean that many others haven't heard of said topic.
It's been pretty widely known for a very long time.
