Since I'm not a lawyer, here's my question - if the US Dist. courts, which are presumably higher up than the California court, dismissed Verisign's claim, am I right in thinking that CA superior will as well?
From what I gather, Verisign is making an "all new" and borader claim - at least in the eyes of CA law. Technically, these are two different cases and this one will probably be run up the same supreme court flagpole eventually.
In response to you and to this comment, I'm not saying that he shouldn't examine PHP/MySQL as an option (and yes, I program for/with both and a few other things including Nuke variants, Java, PERL, C, VB...). PHP is actually my preferred solution for a great many things (running it as a primary scripting language outside of Apache is incredibly useful and I do it a lot). I'm tired of seeing the obligatory "Just do it in PHP/MySQL" answers to ask slashdot questions that don't offer any real information for how to go about that. Assuming that the asker knows what PHP and MySQL are, knows where to find them, is willing to even approach learning a new language, support a home-grown application, keep it all in a timeline that management will accept and do their other normal work while probably not getting paid any more for the effort is making a pretty large assumption. It's moronic. Yes I said moronic.
Like the poster I replied to, these types of comments typically don't offer anything more of use than pointing out what we all would agree is abvious... sure the asker could go off and program their own. If that were a viable option, then they probably wouldn't have asked slashdot. In fact, this asker even said that he didn't want to take that route.
Again, my primary gripe is that the poster didn't offer anything else to support this suggestion. It was wasted keystrokes without saying something like "Check out Hotscripts or the PHP Resource Index for a good place to start. In fact, check out FX.php for something that will help you migrate from Filemaker to PHP." Answering "just do it in PHP/MySQL" and leaving it at that kills the thread usually without offering anything intelligent. I suggested (though I admit I was a bit crass) that posters like that provide more info and produce an actual constructive answer instead of an aloof and castrated suggestion that is offered far to often in ask slashdot replies. I've had my fill of them and finally felt I had to say something.
I think you'd be best off writing your own stuff. MySQL + PHP
This answer irks me. You know, people always mention this, but have you ever attempted to do it? Just "sit down and code a web based version in a weekend" type stuff is horribly unrealistic. First, coding a secure and bug free PHP version of some app your coworkers have used forever is a bitch. Everyone wants their ideas implemented, people refuse to work because you haven't "trained" them yet, managers are (rightly) aftraid of you building it and then being hit by a truck tomorrow... This is not just some hodge-podge personal website to be coded on your own terms. Finally, this guy is probably not a PHP programmer and it's silly for you to assume he is.
People usually ask these kinds of "ask slashdot" questions because they can't just sit down and roll their own. They are looking for genuine alternatives. Answers like this are akin to "You don't like your Ford? Just get a welding torch and some grease and make your own car..." A better answer would have been to point him to some coding resources directly related to what he's trying to do if you really wanted to provide an answer like "If you use such and such implemented in PHP, you'll be able to consider coding your own solution." Any moron can just say "make your own" without knowing what that really involves.
I wonder if Microsoft's portable player will have a short-lived, non-replaceable battery? Otherwise, you'd never upgrade your player.
Nah, MS is moving into the battery market next and all of it's devices will require a porperly licensed MS XPXPXP Batteries. Need to charge your XPXPXP batteries? Plug the special MS charger into the USB port of your computer and purchase recharge time at MSN.com... WARNING: Charging your XPXPXP batteries with a non-MS charger could cause an electrical surge damaging your home/property/spouse/dog and life. Use only approved MS devices for safety. What sort of "interview" only includes four loaded questions?
In the print version of the September issue, it's just a sidebar. Wired does this a lot. There are often little tidbits in sidebars throughout the magazine. This was one of them. Go look at a copy at your local newsstand. I don't remember what page it's on, but it was never meant to be a full blown article/interview. I'm actually impressed that they include their content in the web version so completely.
Geek: Will there be more Star Wars Movies?
Jr. Engineer: I can't tell you that. Lucas made us sign NDAs pertaining to Episodes 7-9.
Geek: Didn't you just break your NDA by telling me you have an NDA?
Jr. Engineer: Doh!
Pink slip with cash bonus is left on Jr. Engineer's desk the next morning signed "Thanks for the plug and renewing the speculation, but rules are rules. - George"
I didn't think I was whining, but to each their own... Good points by the way. I wan't thinking of it in a large rollout scenario. The pricing does still seem odd for a distro though... but then again, Redhat may have inspired them some;) So, are you thinking of deploying it?
I went to the Xandros site thinking "Hey! Another distro to try. Time to grab an ISO!" Sadly, the download section of their site is relagated to the "About" page and they charge for the download... Except for the "Open Circulation" edition which has few of the features advertised here (It doesn't even come with Mozilla and has crippled CD burning software) The only edition to have all of this "killer" tech is the business edition for a $129 download fee (you get some books and some closed source-ware too).
Given the price, this doesn't look so "killer" anymore. In fact, it looks a bit over-priced. I may fork over $100 for a nice SuSE boxed edition, but I still have the opportunity to run the full distro for free if I take the time to download it instead. If I'm forced to pay $129 for a distro, why not just go pick up XP Home? What, if any, is the incentive for people to switch then? To pay one greedy company over another? Has anyone tried the "Open Circulation" edition that thinks the full version would be worth the cash?
How stupid are the people at SCO? (Rhetorical question!) People in forums, comments, jokes and whispered discussions have been saying how stupid they are for still offering their Linux distro since they first started this ruckus. Well, thank god nobody ever pinned it to Darl's shirt! Now it can be used as a legal club on them.
Bitching aside, it is nice to have a real OVC (Original Villainous Company - IBM) show these wanna-bes how it's done.
That hurt. I know I've seen it before, but didn't remember the name. A Google Image Search made me remember. Ouch. The bonus is that there's a paper Zardoz mask hidden somewhere in the image search.... time to have a Zardoz party...
Please note that this is innefectual to send to some ISPs. You won't always get a response. Look everything up first! Go look up who owns an IP at ARIN and who has registered domain names at a lot of different places. Think hard before you send unless you write something automated - You may not want to send anything to someone who is actually the kiddie that attacked you. The result of that mistake is annoying. Trust me.

" I'll be most impressed when they have a Cartoon Physics Engine."
You know, I think most of it is doable in many 3D game engines, such as id's. Sure, it would take some serious modding, but i think it could be done with some specialized entities or areas where you would only have to pay attention to a few of the laws at a time. I think you may have just given some people ideas...
I wonder if anyone has yet combined the two--a bong running Linux! Now there's a case mod...
Did it. A 60MHZ Pentium I Bong running Red Hat back in 99. Had an acrylic plastic water chamber at the bottom of the case and tubes coming out of the side of the case. The fruit bong idea works better - fried that motherboard. Now in these times of water cooling, there's a lot more possibility though.
Oh wait... I wasn't supposed to admit any of that was I.
Technically, in California you have to be a licensed appliance and electronics repair person already. It's just not enforced (that wouldn't go over well in San Jose). I wish I had time to find a better link to source, but here's a link.
After all this complaining (that I do too) about the patent office, it struck me that some companies involved in the current patent frenzy know the bottom is going to drop right out of it eventually. They're seeing a way to parlay quick cash and partnerships. The more ridiculous patents kind of remind me of the empty promises of many.com companies - but now many of these "innovators" have ridden that wave...
I told you I'd post if something met your needs... Birdddman posted a link to Clubdata just a few minutes ago. It's too rough for what I need, but it looks like a good fit for you. I know I'm re-posting it to the same story, but I want to be sure you get an e-mail letting you know it's there. Thanks again for posting.

Thanks! My issue is at home in the bathroom (for reading and not TP) and I'm at work.

Couldn't resist that friendly jibe ;)

I just hope they don't make it part of Wordart or something.

That is the funniest damn thing I've read all week. Nice job.
