The article doesn't mention WinDoom (Doom running under Win 3.11/WFWg). I remember drooling over the screen shots at the end of my level editing book (can't remember the name). WinDoom eventually became Doom95 (I have a copy). Ported by our favorite evangelist, Alex St. John.

As a Quake III level designer, I can't use the ATI cards at all. Why? Because the blurred textures don't let me see what I'm doing correctly. Aligning textures is hell on one of those cards.

I realize that the design community is small compared to the playing community, but ATI just abandoned us. Is that right for a vendor to do?

  4. Re:Anything can be art... on Are Videogames Art? · · Score: 3, Insightful

As a level designer for Quake III, I would assert that it is art. Why do I create levels for QIII? Because it currently gives me the widest and most extensible 3D palette. In fact, I'm currently working on a level that is a tribute to a paint/scultpure artist.

Given the number of hours involved in creating any game and that the components of most games are called "art assets", the subject becomes moot.

The hard part is convincing the un-initiated. Rock 'n' Roll was questioned as to it's being music.
