I think it's funny that the very thing that Microsoft used to nail the coffin on Netscape (as an independant profitable company) might put it down - giving away the product.

Fortunately for us who contribute software or programming to the world, we don't have to show a bottom line to a board that tells us what to do.

One of the reasons Maya is so powerful is that it is almost entirely written in it's scripting language, MEL. The core executable is the scripting language. This makes it easy to customize and build upon. This is why so many professional houses use it. They can customize it as they see fit.

One such advantage for them because of this is prototyping the interface. They (or anyone else) can simply re-write the user interface, menu system or anything else. I believethis is the key to innovation in the industry.

Point? Rather than looking at the design, look at expandability, power, and ease of scripting (MEL is a lot like C).

Unfortunately, setting up a trust is far more expensive than simply buying the land. Though it is a nice idea, the trust will eventually fold.

Even worse, if the trust goes bankrupt, the creditors (those who could care what happens to the land) take over. End of trust. End of preserved land.

You could donate the land to the BLM (bureau of land management), but Mr. Bush Jr. has shown that BLM land belongs more to the government than it does the people.

I guess I'm a pessimist, but this is one possible outcome that concerns me greatly.

  4. Re:I thought satire was protected. on Making and Detecting Illegal Music · · Score: 1
This is a recuring question in modern music. Did I, as an artist, own the rights to the song as a whole or do I own the rights to every combination (or lack) of notes that have been recorded?

During the advent of sampling, keyboard players argued this actively. A keyboard player could sample a single note from... let's say a bass line and span that sample across the keyboard. The player could then play his/her keyboard and it would sound like that bass (or even something new/different if the sample is altered). Keyboard players in cover bands know this trick well.

Since most musicians spend a long time -years sometimes- to develop a good tone or sound, it was debated if tone could be stolen. Companies that produced volumes of pre-made samples for keyboard players would be pissed if they found out that someone had sampled their product and used it - even if the user didn't know they had sampled a sample. Oddly enough, this theivery is an often accepted in the music world (this may be different where you live or in what genre you adopt, but this has been my experience).

The reason is that this type of theft cannot be stopped. It's simply impossible to police every sampling device everywhere. I think this is the logical end to the DJ-Sampling/MP3/P2P debate as well.

I do wish people would include a source list of samples though. It seems like a respectful thing to do, but the current momentum cannot be stopped...

Actually, I've known several musicians who made an album and got no help from the record companies for promotion or "branding". One even had his record company dissuade stores from carrying the album because the reps wanted to push the sound of the moment.

A lot of artists end up with their IP taken by the record company and left out to burn. Have you ever tried to promote yourself nationally? It takes years of touring and living in your car to do (see Ani DiFranco).

(from a previous comment)I'd quit my dayjob right now if I could go travel around the world and play my ukelele to packed arenas for a year.

With drunk people throwing bottles at you if they don't like you (even if your music is great)? Do you like sleeping in a car seat for months on end? Is sleeping four or five hours a night your thing? Would you like to travel the world without being able to see it or even plan your own day for that matter? Do you have a way to keep your apartment/stuff for free while your gone?

The reality is that touring is hell more often than not. Especially if the record company abandons you. Just because you have an album doesnot mean you have a golden opportunity.

    I found another post (http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=24165&cid=261 6302) that says :

generally does not make for the safest fuel source. Liquid hydrogen is *cold* (-400 F) and hydrogen in gaseous form tends to be explosive.

If you had a laptop powered by one of these, you would *not* want to drop it. If you did, you just might destroy your office.

Even if this were powered by some other combustible (such as gasoline) I'd have a hard time putting one in a child's toy, where it could be a fire hazard if the fuel tank breaks, let alone in a $2000 laptop.

So I guess this is a valid question. A further comment points out that the gaseous form is safe (non-explosive). As for autopron's comment "They didn't say anything about liquid hydrogen.", true - they didn't say. I'm just throwing another hypothetical out there. Other options would be compressed gas or solid hydrogen. If the liquid form is -400F then the solid must be even colder. Compressed gas might be the way to go then. Anyone have a clue what the temperature of compressed hydrogen would be?

I'm not trying to troll here, I'm just trying to get an idea of how this thing might work.
