The fact that an octopus doesn't get tangled up is probably related to the fact that the arms are (1) smooth, (2) pliable, (3) slippery, (4) oiled/lubricated, (5) immersed in a fluid. The way the arm tapers from large to small probably has some value here, too.

How about this, in a Darwinian frame of reference:

Those octopi whose arms did tangle were eventually removed from the gene pool.

As Microsoft is often accused of, i.e. our beta testing program is release it to the public and see what goes wrong then patch it.

While Microsoft is omnipresent and therefore their bugs get a lot of press, there are any number of vendors of products who get it wrong on the first try but still send it out.

We had a vendor at my last place of work who modified payroll code and installed it, untested, just before production runs. Unforgivable in my eyes, and it did blow up hideously at least once (which is why you don't do such things.)

Don't expect it to be bright enough to use as a Bat-Signal. OTOH, it's probably just the thing for those home slide-shows, which people wouldn't do at the cost of other projectors. Some may winge about the resolution, but I think 800x600 is good enough for most things as when I'm demoing apps, I target an 800x600 desktop, because most people around here are still using that even if higher resolution is available.

General Motors and Ford have, for the past couple years, only shown a profit in the finance divisions. Automotive operations have broken even at best, but usually are racking up losses.

Microsoft is an OS (Desktop & Server), and Office software company!

Microsoft should be a technology company. They're still very profitable, thanks to all the locked in customers and upgrade paths, but for how much longer? We gripe a lot about their products for good reason, they don't have adequate competition to keep them on the rivet, making their products the best they can be, rather than the slop they release.

Fail to profit? Since when has Microsoft failed to profit? Individual organizations within MS maybe, but not as a whole.

If it weren't for the OS, Office and Server divisions, they'd be dead.

Many companies would have spun divisions like those off and retained some large chunk of stock to profit from as the new entity fought on even ground to survive. That Microsoft has kept each of these divisions under one roof has a lot to say about the shoddy security, bloat and often annoying 'features' in each package.

Microsoft will never change their strategy.... It's always going to be keep the markets cornered, and allow as little interoperability as possible.

Most of Microsoft's success can be chalked up to two failures by one other company...

IBM allows Bill Gates to own and sell MS-DOS under his own company's name, as IBM doesn't take the PC seriously.

IBM fails to protect their PC design, not taking PC's seriously, and clones flourish providing a ready market for MS-DOS

Most of everything else Microsoft has profited wildly from is centered around these two items. Microsoft has demonstrated that they are not a very inventive company by buying up lots of technology companies and immitating others. Where they have attempted to innovate in new markets they have usually fallen flat on their face and lost hundreds of millions of $. If it weren't for the O/S, Office and Server divisions Microsoft wouldn't be able to sputter so frequently.

It would be awesome if Google could completely take over the commercial mapping software application market (ie Streets and Trips/Mappoint and Street Atlas) by enabling routing/directions between the points on the map. Hell, allow us to then download the planned route back to the GPSs via a GPX and that would really rock.

While I've fiddled with it and found the interface to have it's up-sides and down-sides (not really very big considering it's a web app.) I think you're looking for functionality at a whole other level, i.e. competing with Delorme or such, which could prove a challenge. I've got the Delorme package on my PC at home and the volume of information its processing to produce things would kill Google's servers. Besides, Delorme is Topo and Google's isn't, and Topo information is actually very useful when travelling. When I moved west I drove a truck, pulling a trailer with my car on it, up a road I never should have taken. Perhaps the squiggly road on a decent map would have given the appropriate clue, not to take that road because of the high pass. Google could at least include some elevation data in their images as an option.
