As I've said, latest drivers. Confirmed today, again.
So I got to spend the evening with my inlaws. 3 stiff drinks later and I was ready to have 5 more. But when I came home I can say, with certainty, that 6 hours of prime 95 on both cores showed no errors and no crashes. 49C/54C on the cores.
You did give me one idea I missed tho- I changed the SATA driver in the bios from 'ide' to 'sata'. I switched it back. No crashes yet. It's still early tho- I went 4 days without a lockup previously.
Stable drivers.... sorry... I love AMD. I lost 10K on Intel last year alone- I want the little guy to keep pounding them. But this isn't any way to win market share- this shouldn't be necessary.
Asus A8N board just arrived... decisions decisions....
... as I'm just setting up my first 'official' linux box for someone. This person has never owned a computer and professes to know about 10% on how to use one, so I'm going to toss Ubuntu on it and hope for the best.
Of course, I'm guessing they won't even have 'net connections unless they can leach off their neighbors- doubtful- so who knows for certain how much they'll use it for. Even if I have a winmodem that will still function after 8 years of idle sitting (static bags, yes...) I hear there aren't any drivers for them.
So yes, I hope the linux desktop growing somewhat- there's definately room to improve on Windows and a little competition never hurt anybody.
Actually I'm one of those too that had the Antec "3 for 3" special- 3 replaced power supplies in 3 years. Each one of the failed ones were rather obvious as the 5V and 12V rails were very low- 4.3V and 11.2V, respectively. This one is cranking out 5.3V and 12.5V as measured with the Fluke. Again, all new PSUs which are pushing the requisite voltages (and I haven't seen any drops while monitoring.
CPU temps are all low- 40C, 43C under load (I did see a 45C once...) as measured with 'Core Temp' and MBM5 / SpeedFan.
UPS is an APC 1000 / Smart-UPS. Doubt its that.
This is socket 939- so DDR400/PC3200 ram. Bios was flashed when the crashes began to the latest version- and I didn't notice at the time but the ram timings were reduced to 'safe' values- 166 instead of 200- upping them back didn't help either. Memory is at 2.5V (would have to reboot to double check and the raid-5 is rebuilding).
The machine works just fine- it doesn't power off, it just 'pauses'. It's literally sitting next to a constant buzz and then all the associated clicks, whirls, beeps, and bumps suddenly stop, and you're left with just the sound of air flowing over components. Of course video still works so I can see my bloody mouse cursor sitting theredoing nothing.
But keep throwing out ideas. No help on the forums so far maybe you'll hit one I haven't looked thru. Or maybe I'll get another hard lock and I'll go back to the hard liquor....
Hey, thanks for the offer- really. But as I tried to say, I have been as thorough as you can without owning a tech shop.
I have tested 2x different video cards. Still locks up randomly. I have tested 3x different PSUs. Unless you have suddenly lumped Antec TRU supplies in with 'crap' I'd have to say that's rather unfair- An Ultra and a NEO as well. All the drivers? Of course! And as I said everything *WAS* stable *UNTIL* I installed the X2 chip. From then on it's been down hill- with NO discernable pattern.
Memory is CORSAIR XMS 2GB, run at just a bit higher voltage- Oh yeah, it passes MemTest86 for 9 hours. CPU? Not overclocked. Stock everything. Why? Because I need to get to a stable system.
Anyways, I do appreciate your comments. This is the 10th AMD system single chip I've built and the first 'dual core' system, but I'm not a stranger to dual-CPU configs. I know all about temperatures and cooling requirements- used to design and sell waterblocks back when you couldn't just place an order for a CNC machined one.
What it comes down to is that this particular chip, and the manufacturers that make the boards with them, have problems that can't be dropped into the 'dumbass' user slot. With that sort of hardware support from a mobo maker you'd wonder why the chipmaker is getting a shit response.
And with that.... I'm off to backup some more data before the system locks up again.
I'm one of the fortunate 'many' that have had nothing but problems with AMD's x2 chips. Everywhere I turn I see the same problem listed and lamented about in forums- random total hard freezes with the X2 chips running a variety of mobos and configurations.
Some say to disable CnQ, others all USB (like THATS a fix nowadays), while still others recommend a full re-installation of everything and hope it works (doesn't).
I've swapped PSUs, memory, motherboard, drives, RAID cards, firewire cards, keyboard wedges (scanners), USB devices, disabled everything, and I can still get a lockup.
Moral of the story? I'm going back to intel. Yes, they're power hungry, more expensive, and rather not the company I'd like to support, but at least I never had a problem with their chipsets.
(And why are the crashes so annoying? 7 hours+ to rebuild a RAID-5 array everytime the computer freezes. And it still freezes if I remove all components and put in an old video card... but there is NO discernable pattern to it.)
Freeze examples:
Pressing the 'back' button on Firefox. Getting up to go take a piss while downloading Ubuntu Compressing a DVD Ripping a DVD writing a DVD (yes I removed all DVD writers from the system and still got a lockup) 3 PSU's (Antec, 2x Ultras) no affect
Mind you I was totally stable when I had an AMD 3000+ chip- but I gave it to my parents when I decided to 'upgrade' and before I knew this hell was going to befall me. Had I known that, I would have shanked the whole system to ebay in parts and hoped they goto the four corners to never again see the light of day...
Conroe Duo Extreme, here I come when you drop to 118$/CPU.
So basically You-Tube has provide an old MOD tracker as a new hit? Didn't this go out of style in about 1996? Or have I forgotten the old 1mb MOD files that had incredible sound clarity compared to MIDI yet were shunned for their repeating bass line... ?
Actually, IMHO (and IANAL) has a a precedent on this case- but only in Australia. In Aussieland a blind photographer can give instruction to another individual, and that individual can release the shutter, yet the blind person OWNS the copyright on the image.
I don't know if you understand the significance of that statement, but in this country WHOMEVER pushes the button that causes the media (digital or film) to be exposed to light OWNS the copyright. If I reach across you and mash your shutter button to catch a pulitzer- you get are the 'assistant' and I am the photographer. However Australia has gotten it right and awards it to the person that takes the photograph (in the creative sense) rather than the person that actually releases the shutter.
Of course that brings up several issues with slaved strobes and triggers (such as a sound trigger where a yell sets off the shutter) or a beam trigger (Where a basketball player breaks a beam of light at the optimum point to trigger a strobe)... but I can't and won't debate them there.
I hope you can see the difference between the laws we have now and the laws that could be.
Hire an electrician? Ouch. Have you *seen* what they want to charge to do this job? I put quite a bit of onus on the US Government/ IRS for requiring what they do in order to obtain the tax credits. Electicians here aren't qualified unless they take a solar installation course- and they can't do that unless they're for a registered firm. The firms won't install anything but their panels and, for 10K, I can have a 1Kw system installed in Sunny Rochester (sunlight factor: Zilch for the last 10 days).
Our only hope (here) is for the concentrator cells (similiar to the SunCube out of AussieLand) where you can take advantage of those peak moments to gather light.
Having rewired 70% of my house (and looking at several others around me) rewiring existing structures to accomodate the panels is going to be extremely difficult. I figure I'd have to destroy my basement back wall since (wonderfully) they put the washer/dryer/tub on either side of the box. No easy way to hook up an inverter/line match there.
BUT I'd still do this. I just wouldn't ever get the money back in my investment. If I could take the panels and the inverters and the hookups with me it'd be a no-brainer- but I am NOT leaving them in a house where I will already lose $25K worth of investment upgrades (I did it because I was single and I didn't like to be idle).
Something else to note: These are defined as concentrator cells. That means you can't just multiply the efficiency out- you have to take into account the SA of the dishes needed to feed them... and just what the hell you're going to do with all the excess heat that has to be disposed of...
Ignoring your third paragraph, if the crowd was un-responsive to the mm wave then they'd just revert back to the old tried and true- water hoses and tear gas.
Problem with teargas is that you need protective gear for your guys too.
Thanks. I needed to calm down and that was the perfect laugh to get it.
I guess I'm just torqued- I just talked win an individual who arrived back in the states after a 2 year 'volunteered' stay overseas. His replacement, whom he had trained for 6 weeks, was killed the day he left- he had to sign for his body and fly home with him before reporting back to work.
I also remember staring into the two holes in the grounds and thinking about my cousin, whom, if not for a misplaced sense of civic duty, would have been upstairs
So yeah, Jesus Christ drives a SUV but it runs on Bio-Diesel and ethanol and, for some reason, the tank never goes empty.
Look, I'm not going to take the popular road here, but CHRIST this is NOT a big sacrifice that's being asked of people. The AF is looking for a secure communications in case of a MASSIVE emergency. This isn't some podunk little thing that gets run every wed at 5pm, this is a massive attack due to natural disaster, accident (such as a petrol plant exploding) or a planned staged attack!
People are WHINING because their doors don't work.
Here's a clue, and maybe it's because of the way I was raised ("Son, get out and go open the door for your mother") or maybe it's because there are more importan things to bitch about, but "YOU DO NOT HAVE THE INNATE RIGHT TO BE ABLE TO OPERATE YOUR GARAGE DOOR FROM YOUR CAR!".
There is a little thing about Life and the pursuit of happieness, but that's just a little thing some people forget about on a regular basis.
No, it's when they get the judgement against his *parents* - where they're ruined.
I've been involved and vindicated in court case (Same Name, Different Guy) that has a, shall we say, credit problem. I was taken to court by his creditors- even though I proved I wasn't the person they wanted.
I lost about 20 lbs in the time that it took to straighten out and felt like shit for the entire time.
So... what can they do? They can make you so miserable that you don't want to live.
At least 'justice' worked in my case... now if I could just win judgement against them for violations of the Fair Credit act....
We're both always going to disagree on this. I read more into his actions, you (IMO) gloss over them.
Handcuffing a suspect does not render them 'no longer a threat'. Thats why they're typically locked down inside of a police vehicle. That's also why there was a lawsuit against the police force in Indiana when they failed to remove a handgun from a suspect and then locked him in the police car- he ended up shooting himself in the head with it.
Funny thing about arguments- I find your position unjustifiable as you're using knowledge of the future to dispute actions of the past.
I have a loaded gun. I point it at your head. I say "It has no bullets". I go to pull the trigger. You are a) Safe in the knowledge that I wouldn't lie to you and nothing will happen or b) You piss your pants and try to dodge.
If you answer A) we can never agree. If you answer B), you're deluding yourself that this situation was any different than what those officers faced.
It was at least 1/2 hour before the officers showed up. That he was asked to leave immediately after failing to produce ID and he refused. Said refusal constitutes what exactly?
I find it interesting you forgot that fact. I find it more interesting that you would brush off the fact he broke the rules.
The police received a report of an unidentified individual refusing to leave the premise when asked. They HAVE to stop him. He is an 'unknown' and you confirmed that statement by stating, after the fact, that they identified him as a student. BUT AT THE TIME THEY COULD NOT KNOW THAT! Which is the whole crux of the problem: Afterwards everything is clear. During it's not.
All that kid had to do was follow directions- leave when asked (so he forgot his id, big deal- but that's the rules). He refused. Police show up and he decides it's time to leave. They stop him. He yells obscenities. Gets in their face. They taser him.
Pretty clear cut line to me.
For a guy that claimed he couldn't walk after being tazered it sure looked like he was putting up quite a fight afterwards. That's where I'm confused.
No ID? In a restricted area? Refusing to cooperate? Sounds like a criminal to me. And since I'm not allowed to look in your big bag that could or could not have a TAP bomb in it...
No ID card you're out of the building at time + 1 minute, sharp. Refuse, you're trespassing. When you trespass, you're a criminal.
Less Lethal Stun Gun Testing: In 2006 we independently tested TASER X26, TASER M26 and STINGER systems stun guns to determine which was more effective. Watch the following video to find out for yourself:
I don't see police brutatlity- and I've watched the video 5x, including some other clips.
I see someone that may or may not have been a student refusing to cooperate with police and screaming obscenities. The first time I watched I was more afraid for the cops thinking "Shit, is he on drugs?".
The tasers were used in 'drive stun' capacity. That means they the electrodes were put next to each other- still incapacitating but not nearly as a body shot. I can't locate the link ATM but there's a comparison of 4 guys trying to fight thru 2 different stun/Taser models- and in each case they stood up directly after getting hit. So I don't want to hear how it wasn't possible.
Lastly, those officers were in a hostile situation with a mob closing in around them. They've a job to do and that was to remove someone purporting to be a student who had refused to exit the premise (that's called trespass (an unlawful act causing injury to the person, property, or rights of another, committed with force or violence, actual or implied.)) The mob then surrounds and distracts the officers during the performance of their duties. You want to have a discussion? Fine. Do it after the suspect has been subdued- not while they're wondering whether or not the guy is going to run, shoot, attack, berserk, maim, or do something else irresponsible and dangerous.
Those 'citizens' could simply look up the police report from the incident and get badge numbers- how freaking stupid is that "I WANT YOUR BADGE NUMBER" (well, read it dumbass). Protect a total stranger who has refused to show ID and refused to leave and then SHOUTS "HERE"S YOUR FUCKING PATRIOR ACT" HERES YOUR POLICE BRUTALITY"... well, all I've got to say is "You're lucky". Before tasers it would have been a knockdown or a pulled weapon.
And to answer the obvious retorts: Yes, I've been shocked- I was knocked thru a wall by a high capacitance discharge. I stayed stunned for about 15 seconds, then got up, but most certainly could have walked if I had had support. No, I've never been Tased. Yes, I have been stun-gunned (Stupid drunk tricks) and was able to function after getting it on the leg/hip.
From my understanding the steel was hammered into very very thin sheets- of approximate shape- and then bundled. 30 to 50 of these sheets were then dipped in an carbon-iron fluxed solution at high temperature which was then 'wicked' between the plates by capillary action. Cooled and drop forged by any number of techinques the steel was work hardened and quenched, and provided the best of both world- steel's strength and hardness (sharpness), and the raw iron's fibrous flexibility.
As you know raw iron (no carbon) has packed fibres- you can see them as they rust away- but I have no idea if the fibres are that small...
That's called criminal behaviour. When one criminal associates with another person, that person could theoretically be considered a suspect by a normal, sane individual.
Unless it's posted on Slashdot, in which case it's condsidered spying and intrusive.
If I have a long dinner conversation with a known money launderer and I run a business, and he's under investigation, don'tcha think the police are going to take a little bit longer look at my business practices?
I've been fighting for MONTHS to get off the call list. Friday I filed a police complaint alleging harassment- and saturday I received 4 phone calls at all hours of the day- including 854pm.
The police officer that took the case even contacted Conquest and told them to remove my number. That hasn't stopped the calls.
There is NO stopping these people- and if you'd like to complain I suggest you call 1-877-564-2006 (http://www.reynoldsforcongress.com/call.cfm) and complain if you're in NY..... or just if you feel like calling someone and complaining about COnquest. Ask for Melanie (lied to me about putting me on their blocklist) or Nick (campaign manager).
Either way, they are dishonest and abusing the law.
Sounds alot like the FIRST robotics program. Our company (ITT) has sponsored a team the last 3 years, but may not this year because they claim there is no money available. We'll see- lots of fundraising is available.
Given that this competition has quite a bit more lead time, I think you'd get much better results then the 4 week/6 week build time. Any program that brings the bright and talented, as well as the dedicated and interested in to work together in a competitive environment is a plus- we'll need those next generation engineers to come from somewhere.
(And I'm passing on the joke about 3 of the machines mating and producing a super death killer cyborg because I figure others will make it for me...)
We solved this problem the easy way: We ship everything FedEX overnight to the destination.
Have had equipment confiscated in a number of places, had to pay 'import' taxes on company owned equipment with access tags (got it reimbursed after 8 months)... but FedEx gets it there, no hassles, no problems.
Best of all? I travel for the government. So in essence, I'm charging them cost plus to ship my equipment so that it won't be confiscated by their agents.
Also known as a drum scanner. Nothing fancy here, move along....
Seriously, this is a well known technique. We used to use it to scan large areas of highly variable terrain- the only novelty is the addition of mirrors and the fact that it's 100x faster than in the past.

Prove he was a student.
Sounds simple.

Here we go:
Less Lethal Stun Gun Testing:
In 2006 we independently tested TASER X26, TASER M26 and STINGER systems stun guns to determine which was more effective.
Yes, I have been stun-gunned (Stupid drunk tricks) and was able to function after getting it on the leg/hip.
... I've heard so far.
Anyway... interesting theory.
Guess that depends if I am doing something or not.... right?
That's called criminal behaviour. When one criminal associates with another person, that person could theoretically be considered a suspect by a normal, sane individual.
Unless it's posted on Slashdot, in which case it's condsidered spying and intrusive.
If I have a long dinner conversation with a known money launderer and I run a business, and he's under investigation, don'tcha think the police are going to take a little bit longer look at my business practices?
Common sense.
Good for them.
&*shakes head*&
Also known as a drum scanner. Nothing fancy here, move along....
Seriously, this is a well known technique. We used to use it to scan large areas of highly variable terrain- the only novelty is the addition of mirrors and the fact that it's 100x faster than in the past.
