While I truly hate the fact that we can't seem to do any better in this country then simply re-electing the people who screw us over on a regular basis, I think the random notion is a bit flawed. We have to think back to how the Romans society worked versus how our society does. In Roman society there were a limited number of wealthy men who were citizens. They owned businesses and were generally educated. Can't say the same about the general population of most countries. Just look at some of the trolls running around Slashdot, would you want one of them running even your city (or sitting on your jury)?

I do think we need to find a way for more of us who want change / sanity in politics to get involved. I know that my biggest factor in not running is that I don't want people digging in to my private life and the things I do on my own time. More and more we are basing our decisions on decisive ideas and what the person has done in his past then what his or her current plans our for our country. People with good ideas who want to see change are often put off running by the thought of every stupid thing they have ever done in their life time becoming public knowledge and being used against them. Do we care if someone had a lot of sex and experimented with drugs, or do we care that they have a plan to make sure kids in this country have health care and that citizens can make a living wage?

Until such a time that the media goes back to focusing on policy and what the candidate does in his public office, as opposed to the privacy of his own home, I don't think we will get anything better then we have today. Two parties with the most bland and mediocre individuals at the helm...

We talk about how screwed up the system is, then turn around and re-elect all the same people for another term. 9. Re:Foolish move... on 3com to Compete with Cisco · · Score: 1

Actually it wasn't that bad when we were in the business, we just had poor management with no will to compete or support the staff, and making stupid decisions to benefit themselves. Upper management was on so many boards of directors that I'd be surprised that they had a clue what was going on with any of the companies. As an example, 3Com spins Palm because they are a networking company, not a gadget company. About a month or so after that they announce that they are going to exit the networking business, selling the parts of the business to Extreme (a member of upper management just happened to sit on the board of directors of Extreme). They then moved to focus on consumer electronics like Kerbango and Audrey, AKA gadgets. Now that this strategy has failed, they decided they were a networking company again, and are now having to build them selves back up after screwing over their customers and employees. It was a big market for the company. One major bank had a 3com router at every ATM (10,000+) going to one of 3 data centers for redundancy.

It really does come down to having to have a Windows box for each type of work you want to perform (video, music, etc.), and never installing any other software on to the system. Your argument has only one flaw, if we outsource all the unskilled labor (and don't forget, call centers count in that bracket), where do the unskilled in the US go? Sure we can say we'll train them up, but there is a certain percentage of the population that does not have the capacity to do highly skilled jobs.

So what then? Do we create a welfare state where those who no longer can work are supported by those of us who do (at least until our jobs get shipped as well)? It's a nice idea to think you can do away with the unskilled working class, or somehow transform them in to a highly skilled work force. The fact of the matter is that while most of the /. crowd tends to be on the upper end of the bell curve of intelligence, it is a curve and there is a low end, which most people here seem to forget...
