Because there's no way they could offer a rebate that would be both large enough to be appealing to conumers yet not be disastrous financially.

First, consider that the distributor markup is around 50%, maybe only 40%. Wizards is already only getting a $15 cut of that $30 book. They have to pay to print it, and they most certainly have overhead. Let's say that all of those costs will roll up into $5 a copy (which is pretty lowball since it's hard to find information on 244 page 4 color glossy print on good stock and I had to mostly guesstimate based on lower page count or poorer quality prints). Wizards is now making $10 a copy.

Now you want your rebate. Would a $5 rebate satisfy you? That's doubtful but let's say it would. Who's going to administer this rebate program? The retailers like Barnes & Noble? Your local hobby stores? What interest do they have in doing this? It doesn't make them any money. So Wizards has to pay them a bigger cut to run this program for them. Say another $1 a copy. Wizards is now making $4 a copy on that book rather than the $10 they would make without a rebate program. Less than half. Is a $5 rebate going to bring in over double the amount of sales they would normally get? Of course not. Financial disaster.

The phrase THAC0 does not appear in the first edition PHB. The phrase "to hit AC" only appears twice in irrelevant contexts. First edition handled combat with "attack matrices." These basically worked out the same as THAC0 later would, but the term and concept of delegating that information directly to the players did not yet exist.

Not liking them is exactly what makes them like you. People who like cats usually pay attention to them. They talk to them, look at them, and make various sounds and motions to attract them. If the cat doesn't know you this generally freaks it out and it stays the hell away from you. People who don't like cats simply ignore them completely. This suits cats just fine as you're non-threatening and they can investigate you at their leisure. English is a Germanic language. It's only very distantly related to Latin, however, nearly half the vocabulary is Latin or French (romance) loan words (which is where your "partly based on" assumption probably came from). But English grammar is overwhelmingly Germanic, which betrays its true origins. To see where English came from, look at Icelandic. It's a language that has changed very little in 1,000 years and is very, very close to Old English. The main Latin influence came in the first half of the last millenia, during the Norman invasion of Britain, and the English language was nearly wiped out under the French/Latin dominance. This is the period where all the Latin influence came from. But when English returned to prominance in the 15th century as Middle English it had become basically the language we know today. Vowel and consonant sounds have changed greatly, but the language has remained fundamentally the same for the past 400 years or so.

Your friend is very wrong. With the TiVo "Live TV", which is also the Best Quality recording option is indistinguishable from digital cable over RCA jacks. If you have a higher quality setup you'll probably notice a difference. You can also choose from four recording levels (Live TV is always "Best" and there's also High, Medium and Low), and as you go down quality does suffer (video only, audio is always the same bitrate). I record most things on Medium Quality from digital cable and watch on a 27" TV. I definitely notice the difference, but it's entirely watchable for your typical dramas/comedies. Things like sports, high action and live concerts generally benefit most from the higher quality though. If you use coax (RF) as your input source, quality will suffer, so don't do that. And on the flip side if you have DirecTV and a DirecTiVo the TiVo will simply record the MPEG stream from the sat with no recompression whatsoever.
