    That would be mildly amusing (albeit disturbing) if the patent reviewer went home that day, fired up his OS X machine and installed something that asked for his username-and-password...and he then goes "Oh crap. Oh well."

    WinSCP? It's the Godsend of the heterogeneous Linux/Windows environment IMHO.

    Also PuTTY, Symantec AV, Firefox, Thunderbird, Sun J2RE, Ghostscript, GSView, VNC Viewer, Yahoo! Messenger.

    Do Indian techies play or watch a good deal of cricket? I'm an American techie and I personally can't get enough of it (seriously -- ask any of my co-workers!)

    Or, a more general question, do Indian techies find themselves doing more physical non-work activities than Western ones?

    Because Gnome isn't too swift with Cygwin/X11 on a Celeron 400 running 98SE* (hell, it doesn't even run!) Fvwm, keep on crankin'!

    Hover the mouse? Last time I checked a HTTP connection isn't opened until you click on a HTML link.

    If a language has an onMouseOver or equivalent command(s), executing without clicking is perfectly possible. Just combine with a call to wget and you're all set.

    So, to get back on-topic...is mpg321 vulnerable? (Seriously -- I'm not kidding!)

    The only thing that pisses me off about base 10 is that HD manufacturers have decided to use 10^x as the basis for the terms kilo-, mega-, giga-, etc.

    Making gigs=10^9 rather than 2^30 gives an error of about 73 million bytes, which we all could use here and there...

    And that's why I now hate 10.

    Why ten anyway? The nuns pounded it into my head (and my knuckles) that it was the Ten Commandments. (It hurt as well when I asked why then there weren't ten disciples.... :)

    Gee, too bad OS X doesn't run on my old Sparc Classic X.

    And to answer the question "If you run a Sparc, why not NetBSD or Linux?":

    1. I like the Ports Collection.
    2. The last semi-up-to-date and half-decent Linux I've seen for Sparc32 was SuSE 7.3.

    I didn't vote for Santorum (R-PA), Specter (R-PA), or Ridge & Schweiker (Gov. & Lt. Gov. R-PA; Ridge now our Homeland Insecurity Guy) either.

    And while I'm offtopic and on this subject, for PA Governor: Ed Rendell (Dem, ex-mayor of Philly) vs. Mike Fisher (Rep, PA Attorney General). Is this the best we can do, even in Pennsylvania?

    Why have 4 active kernel lines?

    2.0: Legacy systems & embedded. It's tiny!
    2.2: Middle-aged systems or wherever stability is a must. RH6.x and other 2.2-based distros are still in widespread use.
    2.4: New systems with new hardware that requires new drivers.
    2.5: Development. Don't use in a production environment, lest you fall down and go boom.

    Besides, each line has a different head maintainer.

    The 'Tom Baker' Dr Who lives on... at least as a voice on the BBC Radio 'Dead Ringers' series (available over the net with Real Playa). He reguarly phones up unwitting shops to get spare parts for his Tardis etc. It is hysterically funny.

    Quite true, but nothing topped the one where "Tom Baker" (actually Jon Culshaw) called Sylvester McCoy. ("It is true, you are The Doctor!" "And so are you!")
    Question: Can The Doctor go back to meet face-to-face a previous regeneration? I'm ignorant of the laws of time.

    "Dough For The Dodo" wasn't Chuck Jones; it was Friz Freleng's remake of Bob Clampett's "Porky in Wackyland".

    Just last year, Chuck's right-hand-man Maurice Noble died aged 90 +/-. Cartoon Network did a very nice montage using the ending footage to "What's Opera Doc?". What will they do for Chuck (if they haven't already?)

    A possible re-write could state: "Poorly-performing computer code is bred for the purpose of appeasement; superior code spliced into the poor code whenever economically necessary."

    There are no naturally occurring terrestrial sources of H2, so we have to manufacture it. The 2nd law of Thermodynamics says that any time we use energy to create energy, we're losing some energy. So the question is -- where does the energy to create the hydrogen come from?


    Idea 1. Solar. Granted, it'd take one big motherfscking panel (or a motherfscking load of panels) to generate the electricity (or heat the water that turns the turbines that make the electricity, if you're pedantic), but we can't rule it out except for the $$$ needed to make it.

    Idea 2. The hell with H2, use renewable sources. Ethanol/Methanol from corn, hemp, etc. Sure, they are still pollutive, but we won't have to line the pockets of big oil any longer, and neither would necessarily have to be imported from some politically volatile nation... :)

    Besides, I'm already consuming large quantities of ethanol already...

    WDVE, a ClearChannel station in Pittsburgh, has played Tuesday's Gone several times already in the past week. They've even had a "new" mix with audio clips of Bush, Powell, news anchors, survivors and rescuers intersperced (sp?) throughout the song.

    If you really like the station, keep on calling and requesting these songs -- especially if your company is advertising locally on the station. They'll get the message.

    It seems to me this ship should be able to carry more than 19 passengers, which would make for a far reduced price. The cabin looks awefully small.

    Obligatory NT joke: Apparently, you can't get more than a 19-user licence. I'll wait for the GNUpplin, which allows you to use & modify it in any way you see fit as long as you publish the modifications. :) (Truthfully, I'd be using the OpenBSDpplin, but I'm not about to start flamewars.)

    All seriousness: Here's the fundamental difference between Hydrogen & Helium -- Helium is 4 times heavier than Hydrogen. Recall the Hindenberg's two-story grand ballroom/lounge/etc. Hydrogen bladders could support that. Helium couldn't lift that without quadruple the volume of gas.

    What will business do to create a new 'Net in their own image?
    Probably start from the bottom -- the physical layer. Create the fibre/wireless infrastructure in only the hottest markets -- NY, LA, SF, Seattle, DC; thus screwing the lesser markets until the NewNet® profiteers feel like wiring to another city that might get them more $$. If you need proof of this, look to see where the cable companies wired first, lately, not yet, and never will.

    I personally hope that the removal of RDRAM will force them to drive up the quality of the pentium series (or create a new series for Pete's sake).

    You've hit it on the nail.

    This (at least to me) is a move to further lengthen the life span of the P4 and the x86 architecture in order to buy more time for Mer^H^H^HItanium ("To be released next year for the last 5 years").

    My bad :) -- 20/25 MB/sec locally. NFS was hitting less than that, but not much (100Meg Full Duplex.)
