Ok, I'll bite. You DO realize that the chances of J A going without a job are about the same as the likelyhood of being killed by falling airplane parts, in a submerged submarine, right?
Knee jerk holier than thou reactions make the baby Jesus cry.
You don't KNOW they're not in violation of the license. Intent is important. Clearly, they are not distributing the software any longer in a manor that is palatable to the people who write the code. That's a no-no. Also, they're trying for an end run around GPLv2, which is bad.
Frankly, I'd like to see it go to court - I believe a case could be made that they are NOT fully compliant with the license. That, or I'd like to see Samba go GPLv3.
Now if a few more people apply similar pressure. What I'd really like to see, is the Samba team officially pull support for Novell/SuSE, if not outright inform them they are in violation of the liscense, and their right to use the software is revoked.
Excellent! Fortunately, we have very liberal install policies - we in IT control who gets what. Those are very good resources though - I really like the idea of a portable open office that I could have on a key fob or whatever.
It's amazing how, we've been fighting this uphill battle to get our users to use Open Office, and now all of the sudden, managers are calling us to make sure all of their users have it.:-) Some days, I like my job.:-)
How is it that NWN manages to run on just about every platform I've tried to run it on? I think you're a wii bit too concerned with technical details that are actually not that large a hurdle.
How do you reconsile your stance with the fact that there are more Linux users than Apple users, and yet, Blizzard and all the other game companies routinely release software for OS X?
The fact is, the original observation DOES have some merit, your entertaining rant aside.
I agree that this is perhaps THE most pressing issue right now for Americans, but is it really ethical to distribute this kind of information? At what point do you take responsibility for what you post, and NOT diseminate information that, in the wrong hands, will cause what you are trying to prevent?
Blame California employers. Had they acted responsibly, and not just in their own interest, it wouldn't have been necessary for the folks in Sacramento to step in.
Exactly. And, some people with skills won't work at a company that has a reputation for being less than willing to allow unfettered access. Those companies lose out on some of the best people as a result. It's a market, just like any other, really.
Like all employment, everything is negotiable. For example, employers have the right to be as draconian as they wish. Some don't allow internet access at all, for example. Some do with heavy filtering, and dismissal for the slightest infraction, for ANYONE. Employees on the other hand, are not without rights themselves, chief amonst them, the right to walk away. If an employer seems unreasonable, then work for someone else. If you don't have the skills to do that, put up with it until you do. People who won't better themselves shouldn't bother to complain.
How can you illegally sell a company? Surely both parties had to agree, right? If I agree to sell you my house for $20, I can't come back later and claim fraud. How, if both Tom, and this guys company agreed to the sale, can it now be fraud?
Squid, and log reviews. Let the kid have his/her privacy, but monitor the logs for bad things, and correct as needed. For bonus points, don't lock bad sites out of the proxy the first time - but do so for repeat violations.
D20 has the potential to be a great system. Take a look at Castles and Crusaides for example. There are other excellent systems out there to play with, however. Look at what's available from White Wolf for example. Vampires, Mages, & Werewolves, oh my! Plus now Frankenstinian monsters, and more to come. The new WoD system (That's World of Darkness) is really excellent. I own every single core book, and darn close to all the suplimental material. Hey - they're so good that Sony ripped them off to make Underworld - how bad can it be?
Copyright doesn't have anything at all to do with it. All of the good PEOPLE who made good games have LEFT Blizzard. Many of them went on to make Guild Wars. Try actually learning something about this, before you go off half cocked.:-) Read all the messages in this thread, you will learn something.
You can't argue that Blizzard wouldn't have lost money if they let bnetd continue.
You can't argue that, period. It's non-sequituer. I host slash sites for $24.95 a month. Can I sue someone out of existance if they want to do it for free, or for less? No. Why? Because that's retarded, and completely contrary to our legal system - just like the DMCA is.
Maybe someday they'll make Starcraft 2!
Oh yes, just so - in fact, I hear it's being bundled with Duke Nuke'em Forever! Almost all of the tallent that made SC left Blizzard - I don't trust the people there now not to screw it up, frankly.
Have you been under a rock???? Bnetd was an open source implimentation of the Battle.Net server. And Vivendi/Universal/Blizzard sued them out of existance - for doing something we're ALL supposed to believe in and support here - Oh, except when it comes to playing the latest small shiny object.
Now what will I do?? - Oh wait - I know, I'll keep ignoring WoW like I have been since it first came out! How ANYONE can support Blizzard after the whole Bnetd thing is TOTALLY beyond me. Screw them. Screw them right in the ear.
You don't recognize the most basic, and important truth - Wikipedia is not meant to be somewhere that you find breaking news, and even when articles are updated poorly, the 'community' quickly corrects what ever has been broken. As a reference, having had the Ken Lay article be factually correct so quickly is not something Britannica could ever do - if it even HAD an article on Ken Lay, which I doubt it does.
Wikipedia also does something that traditional media cannot - it's a knowledge repository that isn't limited by physical space. Think of it as Douglas Adams 'Hitch Hikers Guide' but less portable, and without the all important button that you needed to read - don't panic.

... IBM put a stake through blood-sucking SCO's heart? Will there be appeals? How long can this go on?
I have two words for you: NeverWinter Nights

the fact that this gives more bad guys the tools they need than might have had them before?

D'Oh! Sorry, that should be http://www.white-wolf.com/ not whitewolf.com. Sorry!

Uh, no, most of their products run fine under wine, which is not closed.

No, not at all. We evaluated RIS. Unattended is just plain easier.
