FYI, changing your oil every 5000 is about the interval recommended for cars nowadays, hybrid or not. The only ones pushing you to change your oil every 3000 miles are the oil change shops.
I hate to say it, but the RIAA squirmed out of their predicament pretty well. They convinced this poor girl and her mother that a $2000 "fine" was a light punishment. Two thousand dollars!!!! Plus, the RIAA now has quotes from a repentant 12-year-old.
In the end, I think it will make the general public slightly more inclined to think that downloading music is some sort of serious crime, when, in fact, it is about the least serious crime I can imagine - if it is a crime at all!
I like that idea. I like it a lot. As an alternative, maybe we should have public defender-type lawyers for civil trials.

I think that was just for ground testing. IIRC, the problem with the fire on the ground was that they were running with 15 psi (one atmosphere) pure oxygen. In space, the pure oxygen at the lower pressure wasn't as big a risk, I guess.
This one phrase has me wondering. (Great post otherwise.) There has to some dogma to science. Off the top of my head, I think you have to assume, blindly, that your perceptions of the world/universe are accurate. Otherwise, any observations you make are questionable - and anything built from them are equally questionable.
Maybe this isn't what you meant, though. This might be more of a philosophical question anyway.
It's still illegal copying. You need the copyright owner's permission to distribute their works (or copies of them). That's the way the law is written.
Thus, Instead of making the same tired "it's not really stealing" argument, I think we should focus on arguing for changing copyright law.
That's not true, but I see how you would think so Take a look at the tax rate schedules at http://www.fairmark.com/refrence/index.htm. The first $7000 you make is taxed at 10% no matter how much more you make. If you make, say, $15000, you are in the %15 tax bracket, but the percentage you pay works out to be only 12.667% - and this is ignoring tax credits, deductions and all that stuff.
If you were to graph the tax rate vs. income, you'd see that the percentage increases gradually as income goes up. There are a few "corners" at the borders of the tax brackets. But it simply isn't true that being in a higher tax bracket means that all your income is taxed at that rate.
It's only illegal until the law is changed. I think the more the RIAA acts like this, the sooner the people will organize to get copyright law changed to match what they actually want.
I still say a 5 year copyright period would be plenty of time.
I agree that it's reasonable to require students' computers to be secure from known attacks. My main point was that the students at a University aren't just peasants to whom the Mighty University is gracious enough to provide Internet access. The students are, in fact, the life of the University. Without students, what is a University?
Because they are so important, I think a smart university would try to help their students as much as possible, rather than alienating them. Cutting them off to let them fend for themselves isn't the best way to do this.
Ummmmm, he's a paying customer, and a student, that's who. Universities exist for the students. If such a crazy policy were proposed, the students wouldn't stand for it, and it would never get off the ground.
Would-be used car buyers should check to make sure the VINs on all parts of the car match. If they don't, it could mean the car was stolen, or perhaps rebuilt after a bad accident. I think I got this advice from carbuyingtips.com
Is it really such a good idea to put my driver's license number on everything I own? It seems to me that my driver's license number is almost as important as my SSN.
Considering how well their SNTP client behaves (the article mentions that any UDP packet from ANYWHERE is accepted as a valid NTP response to a request), I'd say it's very possible the HTTP server is just as sloppy. There just might be a way break in.
BTW, did you read the "Endgame B" possible solution? Are they seriously considering dropping a whole/20 from the routing tables??
OK, you had a bad experience. But, what you describe wasn't truly an independent code review, since the auditors had all those inside contacts. I still think it's useful to have a truly independent, impartial, conducted-by-people-with-expertise code review.
I have to agree with your "JUST GET STARTED" advice. That's the first thing I thought when I read this article. For me, I was often overwhelmed by the large scope of some projects, and I didn't know where to start. Or worse, I just didn't have the motivation to start.
But, if I just started doing some work, even if it was the most half-assed prototyping, my mind soon got into gear and I got going. It also helps me to start working when I think I don't have time for it, such as an hour before I had to go to class. The artificial deadline made me want to finish up whatever little task I had started before I went to class.
I've tried setting aside whole days for projects, and it never works. I always goof off because I feel I have so much time on my hands.
There's still an actual human being at the theater entrance who rips your ticket(s). They check to see if a minor is trying to enter an R-rated movie, etc.
The electronics that actually control the running of the car don't receive any input via electromagnetic radiation, so I think the possiblity for such impact is much less.
Airliners, as the article mentions, use microwave landing systems, etc., etc. that involve receiving signals from the outside, which cell phones could possibly interfere with.
Hmmm, if the Federal law simply bans circumventing access controls, I'd like to see a state pass a law that bans the access control measures themselves.
(This is fun!)

I thought it was just wireless to wireless LNP. If true, then this is good news; I'd like to take my landline number and make it my cellphone number.
In the end, I think it will make the general public slightly more inclined to think that downloading music is some sort of serious crime, when, in fact, it is about the least serious crime I can imagine - if it is a crime at all!
Two thousand dollars! I don't believe it.

Does your friend have a website? I'd like to know more about this plane/car.

What if they put in a few 10 second ads, and allowed free distribution of shows on the Internet. Would such short ands even be worth editing out?
None of the SPAM I get comes from Asia. Is it just me?

No install needed for Mozilla either, if you download the .zip.
