Wow, thank God you're not on the management track.
Having employees is more complicated than playing a video game. Often times employees will feel loyal to the company. They'll want to put in the extra time because they perceive it as helping the company that puts food on their table.
And you just want to fire these people? They're usually not folks that are trying to chissle their employer out of a few extra bucks. They're people who want to do a good job and will keep working until it's done.
Heh... I was reading Reefer Madness recently. I guess it's hard to cultivate enough medicine under grow lights in your basement unless your're medicating yourself with marijuana.
Maybe I'm really naive, but why can't they grow this sort of crop indoors?
I know that it would probably cost a lot more, but by growing it indoors you cut down on the possibility of cross contamination quite a bit. Also, if you're growing a crop to use it for pharmaceuticals wouldn't you want it to be grown in a bit more of a controlled environment?
Changing the color of the headphones won't help much. Muggers will just start targeting joggers that wear Blueberry, Tangerine, Lime, Grape, Stawberry, or Bondi Blue headphones.
What Microsoft is doing is considered coercion, which is illegal. They are able to coerce these other companies by leveraging their market power. This makes them a monopoly.
Don't take this personally, but I'd like to offer a subject for discussion based upon your concept of a omnipotent, personal God.
If you believe in God, then you likely also believe that God is the Law (i.e. the word of God is Law).
HOWEVER, if He is a personal God, granting miracles and the like, then that must mean that He does not apply His laws consistantly. Why grant a miracle to heal one faithful person yet leave another to die?
So basically, if God is not consistant, then He isn't the Law, which must necessarily call into question His properties of being omnipotent, omniscient, and Good.
As I see it, if there is a God, He's either consistant, impersonal and Lawful or inconsistant, capricious and Chaotic (please, no D&D comments).
If He's the former, my worship of Him ultimately doesn't matter due to his Law (which is Order which implies pre-Destination). If its the latter, then why would I want to worship a weak, fickle diety anyway?
You are missing the point. There are millions of Americans who have excellent IT related skills. These folks have trained for many years and their work has contributed positively to the bottom lines of the companies they work for. From a global perspective, maybe exporting their jobs is good, but from an American perspective, it's not a good thing.
Most people I know don't dream of being rich. They dream of having a nice house, a sensible vehicle, and enough money to save up to send their kids to college. They're not trying to monopolize money that might be spent on Indian labor, they're just ordinary people that want to live ordinary lives.
With the way the global economy is moving, eventually all labor will be moved to countries that have the least amount of labor protection laws. Certainly, given 100 years or so those governments will change enough that nobody will have a competitive advantage, but as it stands average Americans are having to degrade their lives because the Multi-national corps want to add a few points to their profit margin.
Obviously China or India will rise to be the next world power, but Americans don't want to be shunted off to the side, destitute, getting by on Mac'n'Cheese and Top Ramen.
It looks like the phone manufacturers are getting close to my 'fantasy specs' which would include:
320x240 hi-res display Camera GPS always-on wireless internet (with built-in router) reasonable d-pad with game buttons bluetooth oh yeah and telephone.
Until then I can cope with my ancient PCS phone.

My own little rant about Event Horizon and about the lack of safety features in the sci-fi workplace in general.
Okay, the Event Horizon. When they first board one of the characters takes pains to point out the handy boxes of explosives that are there for 'separating the ship in case of an emergency'. Blowing up the ship isn't something that happens IN CASE of emergency, blowing up the ship is an emergency unto itself! Why would such a dangerous feature even make it into the designs of the ship? Couldn't they use a safer mechanism? And if not, did they have to just have them out like, 'Oh, please watch where you step, you wouldn't want to TRIP OVER AND ACTIVE THIS BOMB'. That's right, let's keep the explosives someplace a little safer.
Okay, so we've boarded the ship. Let's check out the engine room. Oh, hey, what's this? ALL THE WALLS ARE COVERED WITH DEADLY SPIKES. Well I'm not a mechanical engineer, so I guess it's not my place to criticize, but couldn't they figure out a way to make the ship go putt-putt without placing a deadly hazard in the way of the folks who make the ship run? This seems like a terrible workplace violation. And then there's some weird pool of something in the engine room, totally open to the environs, which to me says only one thing: The crew must have utmost faith in the artificial gravity system. Of course, if explosives to the fore of the ship happened to blow, that might spill the coolant all over the place.
And since I'm on this rant, WTF is wrong with the designers of the Death Star? I mean, couldn't those tractor beam power switches have been installed in a safer location? Why must one endanger ones life by walking out onto a narrow, railess platform and scootch around to the exposed, most dangerous side in order to throw a switch?
Good grief people, it's supposed to be the future. Shouldn't movie set designers use a little common sense and realize that hey, maybe littering bottomless Sith-traps all over the Star Wars universe seems a little odd? A little unbelievable?
*sigh*
Or maybe all this means is that there's some dark, nihilistic future where building things safely is more expensive than human life. That there is an endless sea of Stormtroopers and that it's more beneficial to lose a few over the edge once in a while than it is to actually do things safely.
I am opening a comics shop focussing on anime and manga here in Indianapolis, so I'd like to throw in my response to your message.
I am thrilled to hear this news. Dreamworks has produced only excellent movies and T.V. series since they were formed, and I completely trust their ability to promote this movie. I *want* anime to be exposed. I *want* it to become popular.
Anime tells stories in ways that American producers can't figure out how to mimic. Why shouldn't fans of anime want more people to learn and appreciate this excelling art form?
See, stuff like this really makes me angry. We wonder why we spend millions of dollar on systems that ultimately fail? It's because of the 'not my problem' attitude that you're demonstrating here.
If the database was such a big problem, why didn't you raise the warning bell about it? As you said though, you'd rather find your own workaround since the rest of the project isn't your responsibility.
Sorry, I don't mean to vent at you specifically. It's just that our company got burned by some contractors that had the same attitudes. It took us months to figure out their logic and we ended up tossing half their work.

Sir,
I was reading about the way you treated the student that made the comment about
the gun and I'm amazed at the inequity of his punishment. Why are his fellow
students allowed to go free of punishment when they bullied him into his
comment? Are they now able to go about badgering other students into making
similar remarks?
You have given the bullies what they wanted.
Shame on you.
Sincerely,
Corinna Cohn

Yeah, but about 5% of the respondents to Slashdot polls identify themselves as CoyboyNeal as well.
Is anyone else tired of Mike Bouma shilling for Amiga Inc? I mean we have an example Here, and Here, and here, AND FINALLY here!
Sheesh, you know I really don't mind advocacy, I used to be a huge Amiga advocate myself, but Mike Bouma's submissions contain about as much objectivity as ABC doing a review of a Disney movie.
Hemos, please stop posting his submissions until the point that they no longer read as religious tracts.
You are right - we do have responsibilities to society - but not all of those responsibilities should be FORCED on people.
From what you're saying, I understand you to mean that taxes should be voluntary. If this is not what you mean, please elaborate.
That is the problem with Communism/Socialism - it assumes that those in power know what's best for all and have the rights and ability to dictate what people do with themselves
If we *aren't* assuming that those that are in power generally know what's best for the population they represent, what is our government for anyway?
Would you like every person in the US to be FORCED to work in a soup kitchen? Sure it would help some people, but once again you get on a slippery slope of fascism.
Please note that a significant portion of the population is 'forced' into working two minimum wage jobs in order to try to make ends meet, and even then they fall behind. I don't support the idea of being forced to work in a soup kithen, but I'm curious about what you think of this contrast.
That being said I see little problem with having the more wealtht pay a higher percentage of tax - to a point.
I agree totally. This was the arguement that my post was attempting to support.

That's weird. If you're a customer (implying that you're PAYING for this site), why isn't there a star next to your name?
/. number, but that doesn't entitle you to any special bitching rights.
I see your low
But that's just like my opinion man.
Most of the displays on display would show trails/fade/video lag with fast moving anything on the screen.
One thing to keep in mind when looking at banks of LCD displays is that they're often connected through video splitters.
Affordable video splitters don't necessarily do a good job of reproducing the original image quality. I'ts kind of like making a Xerox of a Xerox.
It's tough to judge the quality of such a moniter unless it's connected directly to the video output source.
Also, for best quality, it should be digital output instead of the old fashioned VGA output.
Heh... I was reading Reefer Madness recently. I guess it's hard to cultivate enough medicine under grow lights in your basement unless your're medicating yourself with marijuana.
Thanks for the perspective.

.but its chief advantage is that it is easy for dumb people to learn how to use it.
I'm a dumb person and I've had no end to troubles trying to learn how to use this stupid feature.
That happened to me too. hehe.
I guess they're getting serious about tracking down piracy.

I know I'm probably going to catch crap for this, but I thought that Planescape:Torment was actually pretty dull.
The puzzles were not challenging (and took too long to solve because of walking times), the dialogue was stiff, and the combat wasn't fun.
To be fair I only gave it a nights work before setting it aside, but I doubt that my mind would change by playing it again.
Meh.

I was a bit flummoxed at first too, but I went to Barnes and Noble and bought the blender book and I was up creating things very quickly afterward.
The interface has a steep learning curve, but I think it's worth it to learn the program.

Microsoft is afraid of Linux
Whatcha think?
