  1. Re:How? Reliability? on Recovering Secret HD Space · · Score: 1

What about the cost of producing drives?

in big quantities it might be cheaper to produce 10000 200GB drives than to have to factory lines to produce let's say 7000 200GB and 3000 150GB drives.

Sometimes, it is better to produce one kind only, and just cripple the firmware. Which is much easier than having to deal with 2 different lines of product. Testing is easier. You test only for 200GB drives, if it works, great, you know your 150GB will work also.

Take a burstable bandwidth, let's say that can burst to 100mbs, but to control your bandwidth in most time to ensure you do not go over the cost, you configure your router to not allow more than let's say 1mb of bandwitdh or whatever you want as a maximum and willing to pay for in normal time.

You should then monitor your bandwidth usage in real time, as well as the logs on the machines, and adjust the traffic shaping to the amount of traffic you want to allow.

For example, you know what on that day, you will do a marketing operation, and you are willing to spend $xxx more for the bandwidth, you then change your setting right before your marketing plan to the maximum of bandwidth you are willing to pay.

I hypnotize people for a lot of reason, and it is unbelievable sometime what you can achieve.

I performed it on my mother, she plays bridge for fun, she is 55yo, and I started on her a year ago. She said bridge is a game that requires a LOT of concentration and memory, which she did not have.

It took me 14times before being able to hypnotized her the first time, but after that, it worked like a clock. I made her a CD, suggestions that I adapted all the times for the game, for her concentration and memory. And it worked, after 6 months of that, she has changed. When she plays, she is extremely focused, and she DOES remember pretty much anything she wants during the game, at a point she was just awarded the first price in her league, and people were amazed of her change.

I did the same thing on my girlfriend when she was a student, studying for her bar exam, she was able to take a book, study it, under hypnotism influence, you could do ANY noise, ANY distraction around her, she would not notice you and was still studying. After that she was able to remember everything very easely. During the exam, I hypnotized her right before so we could remember and see in her mind all the pages of the book she needed to remember, and it worked she said.

Sometime, when she needs to remember sometime, hypnotism is the key. Like once, someone gave her a paper with a phone number, she actually just saw the paper before putting it in her pocket, and lost it. 2 Days afer, under hypnotism, she was able to draw what was on this paper and have the correct phone number.

I have countless stories, for also physical 'enhancement', and I am passionned about the brain, and its under-utilization by most people, it is amazing to see how under-used it is by most people.

You were then routed to the right servers through Transpac X25 (That was the routing protocol like TCP/IP), and then connected to the server, via a Pseudo text/graphic interface (Minitel was capable of of simple graphics).

There were also some pages were most of the pages were remaining the same for example, the top for the navigation menu, and the bottom was the content... no frame, but SO close... That reminds me of some recently approved Patent on this subject...

Come on... bring on Burger King, Mc Donald, Wendy, Pizza, I knew every single restaurants/fast food/dinner around my company and home !! Man it was good !!! Oh wait !!! I went up from 175lbs to 230lbs (and 5"11)!! What's my cholesterol level ? off the charts... blood pressure ? way up my friend ! my liver ? Doctor told me I'll die of a liver problem if I don't stop drinking, WAIT, I am not drinking Doc ! just eat crap ! oh yea... and my girlfriend left me...

Anyway, I decided to do something, move, went to a gym club, hired a personal trainer 3 times a week, at 7:30 in the morning (believe me I am not a morning person !!). It is expensive, but it is worth it. In 4 months of that, exercising, lifting weights, running 30mn every other day, I lost 30lbs. Wow, I started to look not too bad, and I had dates again ! yea... oh... no, it was bad...

I met a new girl (She's my wife now !!) , and she was SUCH a fine cook, she LOVED to cook, my home cooking, anything I wanted, man it was good !! And we were going out to good restaurants 2/3 times a week... oh yeah.. and physical exercise, gym ? well gone. why bother ? I have a new cute girlfriend...

Wow... I had a good time then, and you know what ? In about 6 months of that, I gained what ?? 40lbs !! and then, there was something, family meeting between my parents, her parents, etc around christmas to announce we're getting married, and some photos taken. I came back home, looked at them on the computer, and I died... did not recognized me. Althought I was feeling already the past few months my body changing.

I decided to change again before my wedding, I bought a treadmill, bowflex, and japanese PS2, and DDRs. YEAH...

and you know what ? diversity, I changed my eating habit, completly, eating light, no more soda, fried food, burgers, etc... exercise 20 to 30 minutes a day, sometime more on DDR because it IS fun. (oh yea... added bonus is I can go to arcade room now and I score pretty well...). Anyway, I lost 55 lbs, went back down to 185lbs, and I am not finished yet, goal is back to 175lbs, and have this nice 6pack I never had before that I have beginning of a shape now...

and you know what ? my doctor predicted me a long life, all my blood test are completly normal, my liver went back to normal, my high blood pressure came back to normal, I have SO much more stamina, energy to do things, concentrate, I am a different man, and girls look at me again (oh wait... I'm married now...)

anyway, all of that to say that when you gain weight, your whole body changes in a really bad way, you probably also shortened your life a lot. People notice it, but most of the time they are too polite to tell you. You tear off your clothes, etc...

When you loose weight, you only have benefits (except buying new smaller pants and oh yea, reducing the size of my wedding ring, I loose it now !!), and YOU FEEL GOOD !! Full of energy, stamina, new strenght. Your whole body will tell you thank you, and friends will now say something, "Wow you look great now, it's amazing the change !".

The moral is, if you want to loose weight, IT IS POSSIBLE, motivate yourself, find something that suits YOU, take a 20/30 minutes a day and DO IT !! No BS you're busy and working 12 hours a day ! I was too, just get up earlier and exercise, it'll give you more energy for the day!

I don't know what is your source ? Video Camera ? then you need a bunch of computer that will acquire and compress in real time the data received. I'll probably would go something like DIVX with some of the lowest quality setting it is doable to achieve that in real time with a machine that is powerful enought. Althought you will need a LOT of them. But it is doable. Then, in each machine you put something like 4 100Gb Harddrive, which will give you 300Gb of storage if you raid 5 it. According to your specs, you'll need about 90Kb/s, about 77Gb/day. You use that as a temporary storage. With this config, you dont need a gigabit card on each machine, a 100Mbs would be enought (transfer of about 36Gb/hour at max speed). Let's Every day you create a separate directory on each machine, that would make it easier, and you split the files in hourly files in these directories. That would make 24 files/directory, much easier to backup that way.
    Backup
you could have something like 1 Quantum ATL P6000 Robotic Ultrium LTO Tape (100MB, uncompressed per tape, $100 normal price per tape, much cheaper in bulk) (http://www.ultriumlto.com/atlp6000.htm), you could have about 32drives, 652 cartdrige, meaning a capacity of about 65TB uncompressed, good for about 10days of backup according to your need. According to your specs, you would need about 70 tapes a day.
It is a fiber library so you need to buy a Fiber switch, something like a Brocade switch, silkworm 3800. (You can put 6 drives per fiber on a P6000), so you need 6 ports. Then you buy several SUN servers that will be use for the backup, something like 4500, 10CPU/10gb of ram, a bunch of gigabit cards inside, plus fiber that will be connected to the Brocade to control drives on the library (6 drives per fiber). You'll need 6 4500s to access the 32 drives of the P6000, using 6 ports on the switch.
You install Veritas Netbackup Server on these babies, the client on each of the PC that would be used for acquisition. Then you have a centralized management server, and you tell each SUN machine to continously backup each invidual pc for the previous day.
You are done. of course it is a management headache. lot of machines to backup, 70 tapes needed a day, but it is doable.
Cost would be a lot. 1000 machines x $2000/machine (need storage, powerful CPUs) -> $2M Library, I don't remember the cost for a P6000 fully loaded with Altrium drives, but probably around $500K.
Then you need 6 SUN 4500s. About $200K list price, you can have a good discount, easely 30%. Netbackup, licenses for 1000 machines, 6 servers. that will be VERY expensive., about $120.000 for licenses for 1000 clients.
You need also the network. Brocade switch, fiber equipment, network switches with 1000 ports, I'll advise something like Summit 48, 48 machines per switches, with gigabit uplinks to several master switches, like extreme switches. 22 Switches, about $5000 each If my memory is right, about $110K then. I don't remember how much is a extreme, but you'll need 2 of them for bandwith.
I would say your total cost would be about $3.5M for a project like that, but you can probably negociate a lot and have it down. But this is going to be costly. Also the daily cost would be 70 tapes x $100, $7000 day, $210K/month.
I hope you are planning to make lot of money with this system !
Of course, this is not complete, I probably got lot of prices wrong, I think overall I might not be too far. I know I forgot lot of things, but this is just a general overview of a solution I would design if I had that money. I only used your specs, I am pretty sure compression could be better, 15 images/seconds, etc. and you could reduce ongoing storage cost by half or more.
