>Wait until Linux goes mainstream. Most people will just log in as root for normal activities to avoid the hassle of "su".
Mac OS X has a good example on how to work as non root. The current ubunto didnt even asked me to set up a Root password during the installation, so i can just su(do) and it works just fine. It looks like Longhorn will try something similar (running as norma user and just asking for the "root" pw if necessary)
Every Enterprise that uses a Windows network should have their own SUS or something more sophisticated to manage the patches that are deployed.
with this you can control what patches are deployed and when
Are there any plans to make the Mozilla Apps corp. friendlier? i'm too lazy to dig up the Bug #'s, but i'm talking about Exchange Support (not via IMAP) for TB/SB, possibility to switch to MSHTML for specified pages (most intranets i've seen use at least some ActiveX stuff, that requires IE and i doubt that they'll recode their Apps just to be Mozilla friendly) for FF (as some kind of plugin)
Having a dual rendering based browser just doesn't make any sence.
maybe for you at home, but just think about a large corporation with an intranet site that is IE only (quite a few intranet apps are IE only).
if they wanted to switch to firefox they'd had to tell their users to use Ie for intranet and Firefox for the rest. that doesnt really make any sense.
So having a browser that can switch between those two is quite important if you want to get into huge corps.
i just bought the early Friends DVD Boxset (havent seen the early stuff) for ~1Euro/episode. (i think thats a great price)
if there is an online Shop that charges ~1$/Euro/Episode with the right to watch it on my TV (i dont want to see it on my PC) than i'll get it from there.
But 5$/Episode is really expensive (i have spend that much on my Buffy DVDs, but i highly doubt that i'll do that again for any other series)
well, i got one of those "Smart"phones some time ago... the idea of this is neat, but the software sucks so badly.
sometimes the phone just crashes if someone calls me. (that should *not* happen) At least once someone called and i didnt see anything on the display about an incomming call - and yes, the signal was good enough to receive a call (again this should *not* happen).
My Phone (Motorola A925) has all of those new and great features (GPS, PDA, Bluetooth), but none of those work fine. I'd love to have a *good* all-in-one device, but it seems that i'll have to wait some years to get one thats actually usable.
>I thought this was Slashdot, a gatehring of people excited about new technology.
Only if its done well. there is no need for a crashing mobile Phone.
I dont want to have IE removed from windows (every modern OS needs a browser), but i want it to be *completly* removable without breaking the whole system.
Unfortunatly thats not possible anymore (just one stupid example where MSHTML is used: the Add/Remove Software dialog from Win95/98 was a fast and easy to use dialog, since Win2k that dialog uses MSHTML* and takes ages to load, so removing the HTML component of IE breaks stuff that have nothing to do with HTML)
* in Win2k you can sometimes see IE's image not found symbol if it takes to lobg to load the list
well... they "won" the Browser War I with IE4/5 vs Netscape 4.x. that didnt stop FireFox from trying again.
>Why should Joe Average - who uses Longhorn - switch to Firefox when he already has a 'super cool browser' right on his desktop?
for the same reason why they switch now from IE6 to Firefox. because Firefox is better. if IE7 is better than Firefox, MS deserves to win the next round
quite a lot of Spyware is installed by the user (remember Bonzai Buddy, Kazaa, whatever?)
if those Apps were ported to Mac OS/Linux/whatever and had the Spyware included, its just a Install away to get infected. Esp. if the App asks for your root pasword to install itself where it needs to be installed to (happens quite a lot on some Mac OS X Apps).

We continue to recommend that you use a strong password for these types of activities."
>Have you looked at AbiWord?
yes, didnt like it (it couldnt import the Word files properly)
>Why isn't OpenOffice experiencing the same explosive success as Firefox?
Because OpenOffice is like the old Mozilla. good (if not great), but totaly bloated with features a end user doesnt need.
I really want a small App that doesnt take ages to load and does the 10% of features i use perfect (or good enough) and the rest can be Extensions.
I really hope that OpenOffice looks at the reason why Firefox is so successfull and adopts it.
(Note: i'm talking about home users and not corporate use)
> Any clues on how to get Firefox to use the Apple Keychain?
0 0 would do it ;)
well, fixing https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1064
so, no its not yet implemented (Camino has it, i think)
> he can't seem to conceive of the notion that there might be more than one person's data on a single machine!
/.
Most Home Users have a single user and auto Login turned on.
In fact i havent seen a single Home PC(*) that has more than one User.
(*) That means PC from "normal Guys" not the ones that read
maybe, but even on my mac i dont look at 128x128 Icons. they are allways downsampled.
just think about looking at those large icons, you could only have 10 or so on screen... not really usable
thats the email that Apple sent out today. Subject was "APPLE-SA-2005-04-15 Mac OS X v10.3.9"

128x128 Icons?
most Windows Icons are 16x16 (Explorers List View) or 32x32 (Icon View).

the only Question from XPSP2 was if i want to enable Auto-Updates. the Firewall was enabled without asking me (that was XP Pro Corporate Edition)
in case someone needs a proof: Google Cache from PR

maybe its time to do the same with Sound?
Render it instead of faking the effects (thats you EAX).
if you see PopUps in Firefox, please file them here : https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25383 1 (no link, Bugzilla doesnt like /. links)
maybe the new Netscape 8 (that can switch between Gecko and MSHTML) is a solution for you?
(if its possible to set MSHTML for your server and Gecko for the rest)

so that Blizzard would probably sue the original owner (you have to enter your adress in order to get an Account)?
i wouldnt do that

do it like everybody else: install all runtimes and System Stuff you need.
.ocx and .dlls so they couldnt just remove the .exe.
btw: they were *ordered* to remove those
