Really, I have a ton of respect for all astronauts and consider them true heros, but please don't resort to making sensationalist statements like (FTFA):

"A lead, however earnestly and expensively won, once lost, is nearly impossible to regain,"

That doesn't even make sense, how is it nearly impossible to regain a "lead"? The only reason he said that was to scare people. Remember at one point the Soviet Union was winning the space race, but the US eventually overtook them by landing on the moon. Now he is claiming that we are at risk of losing our leading position in space to the Russians. It seems that based on his previously quoted statement that should be nearly impossible.

Additionally, Eugene Cernan had this to say (FTFA):

"Get the shuttle out of the garage down there at Kennedy (Space Center), crank up the motors and put it back in service,"

I think all these men understand pretty well that that's not how it works. The shuttles are getting old, are a huge money pit, and they have already been in service longer than planned.

I think NASA's place in space exploration should start to move into an advisory one rather than an active participant, at least for manned exploration anyways. With the advances that the private sector and other space agencies are making, it won't be long before the only reason for NASA to do manned space flights is for the sake of American pride.

I think the way a warp drive works is it folds space/time around the ship rather than actually propelling the ship faster than light. So the ship is never actually traveling faster than light, but it does wind up covering more distance than light does in the same amount of time.

No, NASA has never been about just "sending people to space". They accomplished their original goal of winning the space race and now their official mision statement is "pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research".

I'd say that this is exactly the kind of stuff NASA should be doing, they are saving time and money by not doing all this research themselves and at the same time (hopefully) promoting collaboration between scientists and space enthusiasts all over the world.

You are probably completely right about the top 10% accounting for at least 70% of the income, in fact I bet it's more than 70%. I want to reiterate that I think the rich should be taxed more, but that won't suddenly fix all our problems.

My point was that it doesn't matter how much more money the government brings in from taxes, they are still going to spend it like it grows on trees.

The thing is though, simply taxing the rich more won't make all the problems magically go away. The top 10% already account for about 70% of all income tax paid (source). The real problem is with how badly the government mismanages it's money. Give the government more money and they'll just find more contractors to overpay. I agree that the rich could probably pay a bit more in taxes, but the problem is with how the government is spending the money, not how much money it has.

Maybe you should do some reading about Russell's Teapot in order to understand that the person asserting a claim is the person who carries the burden of proof. The analogy was originally directed at religion but it helps describe the basic concept of "burden of proof".

Since you're the one who is being lazy, you will probably not bother to read that article, so I'll quote the important part for you.

Many orthodox people speak as though it were the business of sceptics to disprove received dogmas rather than of dogmatists to prove them. This is, of course, a mistake. If I were to suggest that between the Earth and Mars there is a china teapot revolving about the sun in an elliptical orbit, nobody would be able to disprove my assertion provided I were careful to add that the teapot is too small to be revealed even by our most powerful telescopes. But if I were to go on to say that, since my assertion cannot be disproved, it is intolerable presumption on the part of human reason to doubt it, I should rightly be thought to be talking nonsense.

So you don't think I'm entitled to proof of what you claim and that I should just believe what you say without any evidence to back it up? If that's the "entitlement bullshit" you are wanting me to drop, then I think I'll have to politely decline. I like making well informed opinions rather than just taking things at face value.

I'll assume you were making your sources up anyways though, since if you actually had them you would have readily provided them.

Here are your sources - YOU do the reading...

Those are not sources for what you are claiming, half of the links don't even have anything to do with accessory charges. You need some specifically about police officers being charged in a similar situation to do some comparisons with. Since you are the one claiming there are specific cases to back your statements, it is your job to provide the proof.
