    It has up to 14 (7 per 2 controllers) 250GB ATA-100 drives. We have one and it smokes. We're getting about 300MBps throughput (yes, a capital B). Not too shabby...

    At our University, I just heard preliminary estimates from a scientific poll that about 10% of undergraduates use a Mac. That's up dramatically from the last poll a few years ago (~5%, IIRC).

    It's NORMAL HUMAN BEINGS that are buying Macs. So what if pointy haired bosses stick with Windoze...

    SGI's Data Migration Facility. It works on IRIX, but maybe they have a Linux version now (or get a MIPS SGI on eBay). It migrates older files to tape automatically, or to another filesystem, if you happen to have a big huge array somewhere...

    The Safar bug you're referring to could have (before it was patched a few weeks ago) allowed someone to 1) run arbitrary code 2) as the user who is running Safari, 3) using whatever available binaries are on the system. This is a FAR CRY from "r00ting," which would require superuser prviledge elevation.

    One simple reason: it's not verifiable

    Now, "futzing around" isn't necessarily the same as actively contributing to a bonafide project. I would consider being a documented contributor to an open source project "professional work."

    Installing Linux on your white box at home is not professional work...

    There are automated tools that can invisibly install software (that's one of their strengths) that administrators can use to deploy things (automatic patch updates included). Does the bill allow for these?

    You ask this person the same things as anyone else:

    -Ask them if they understand the nature/scope of the job
    -Ask them to describe relevant experience (professional, not futzing around on their own time)
    -Ask them to describe any characteristics/attributes that make them a good choice for this job
    -Ask them how they would handle any particular circumstances you either expect your operation to encounter, or some that you have encountered in the past that could have used some good leadership
    -Etc.

    Basicallly, when interviewing, you really only need to concern yourself with KSAs - knowledge, skills and abilities. Note that interpersonal communication and team skills are VERY critical KSAs. I value them more than actual technical or academic skills - those can be taught. The former, not as easily.

    I sat on the committee that hired my current supervisor. She turned out to be one of the better administrator's we've had...
