I have a dream that someday the slashdot editors will provide a little more understandable content in the blurbs... especially if the topic is gaming and the gaming icon isn't used.
Back in my college days, I was an alpha-geek because I could actually do programming work on our VAX systems from my dorm room. No wireless or ethernet, my computer (IBM XT-compatible, 10 MB hard disk) had a 1200 baud modem (that 1.2 kbps for you young-ins who only know of 56 kbps modems).
Now, of course, I surf from my porch swing via my wireless network in my house connected to my cable modem.
Once a person truly gets used to typing, you don't have to look at the keyboard at all and can keep your eyes on the screen. I don't know about you, but my screen changes far more often than my keyboard does.
(Do I need to mention that I spend most of my working hours inside emacs so that I move my hands from the keyboard as little as possible?)
Eons ago (1990-91 or so), my office got a Sun 4/280 and four Sun SLC diskless workstations. On my suggestion, we named them after the Marx brothers. The SLCs were harpo (mine), groucho, zeppo, and chico.
Even the easiest-to-use content management system needs a human operator who cares to and has the authority to change part of something which portrays the corporate image.
There is still no mention of ArsDigita's relationship with Red Hat or its imminent demise anywhere on the site.
At my desk in a client's office, I have a win2k machine. The magic of VNC allows me to work on an X desktop. But I also sometimes work on my laptop from home. So, I have different VNC sessions going simultaneously at different screen resolutions.
I currently use fvwm2 because kde 2.x doesn't support more than one kde session per user per machine.
...you might be better off investigating the Time::Human module by Simon Cozens. This creates person-friendly descriptions of a time, transforming the excessively precise 00:23:12.00 into a positively laid-back ``coming up to 25 past midnight.''
I've surfed around CPAN, google, and Simon Cozens' home page but can't find this module. Can anybody point me to it?
Like you, I'm the front-line tech support person for all of my family and many of my friends. The more I read about Win XP and Passport, the more I want to spam them all and say
ATTENTION: I WILL NOT SUPPORT WINDOWS XP. DO NOT UPGRADE TO WINDOWS XP. IF YOU DO, I WILL NOT HELP YOU WITH PROBLEMS.
I've been asking for sample based ringtones for years. Not because I want Eric Idle saying "Message for you Sir!" (cf. Holy Grail) or because I want the latest teeny-bopper to sing when I get a phone call.
I want to hear the sound of a real ring, like all phones had when I was growing up. You know, electricity causing hammer to strike metal bell inside the phone leased from Ma Bell...
I think the the new Washington, DC government page (washingtondc.gov) is actually a pretty good site.
Right on the front page there are links for "Today in DC", including meetings, weather, and (very important) closures.
There's a link to an alphabetic list of DC Government agencies. Most of these subsites contain relevant information like contact information, hours of operation, procedures, an deven forms in some cases.
In fact, I've had better luck getting information from the DC website than I have trying to get somebody to answer the phone.
Now if only we had real congressional representation...

If I recall correctly, this is from the Muppet Movie... from 1979.
I guess I'm more than 10 years older than "age old".

The 4/280? "karl"

Has this changed in kde 3?
Aren't there other issues with IE 5.5 SP2? Like not being able to run standard plugins and java?
Yes, you're right. It was a bad choice of fonts. But you're wrong in your terminology. The use a font without serifs (aka sans serif).
Times Roman, Garamond, Georgia are examples of serif fonts.
Helvetica and Arial are examples of sans serif fonts.
I am *such* a geek.
Look carefully at all of the photos. It isn't a standard blow torch, but rather a can of hair spray and a lighter!
Shouldn't you have used this icon instead?
Never thought I'd see the day when the slashdot editors would correctly fix the spelling of a submission.
Isn't the idea of "peddling" your way through a game the main point of DopeWars?
Aren't most second level domains under .us already (exactly) two characters?

It's a simple thing that could/should be in the browser, but google gave it to me.I've been asking for sample based ringtones for years. Not because I want Eric Idle saying "Message for you Sir!" (cf. Holy Grail) or because I want the latest teeny-bopper to sing when I get a phone call.

I doubt that we will be using text-based email twenty years from now. Nobody will notice or care when email turns 50.
Why the Towers collapsed:

Better yet, ssh into their home boxen and blast an mp3. According to /. polls, their computers probably aren't more than 10 ft. from their beds.

Huh? I use everybuddy and talk to lots and lots of people who use both AOL's included IM as well as the standalone AIM client.

So the FBI would look at the garbled text... and probably immediately try a simple monoalphabetic cipher attack on it.
I don't think you'd gain much.
Now, consider the benefits of using emacs with lots of C-a, M-x dired, C-x b, etc. thrown in. That could throw them for a loop!
