  1. What a cry baby on Opera Files EU Complaint Against Microsoft · · Score: 1

First of all, complain to the OEMS. They are the ones that can unbundle IE from the OS and install your browser if you can strike a deal with them. Microsoft is under no obligation to include competitor software on a CD they publish and distribute (unless Opera wants to pay them to do so).

Secondly, the EU is in no position to try to enforce MS to using international standards. That's Microsoft's choice. If they want to go propietary, let them and compete on your own merits.

They're complaining to the wrong people about the wrong items. Christ, this ticks me off enough that I'm actually thinking of sending a nastygram to Opera.

Heck, up until a few months ago I was doing front-end development for a multi-million dollar web-based subscription offering. For the business end of things (the site the customers used), it was IE6/7 and FF1/2 compatible. For our internal Admin site, it was IE only, since it was easy for us to dictate which browser we were going to support.

He's correct, the best case scenario saved at most 25 cents per document. Its highly unlikely that purchasing site licenses for Word would have amounted to that much over 7 years. And I say Word on purpose. Its highly unlikely that any home-grown web-based spreadsheet solution can match the analytical functions that Excel has built in (Google doesn't do it, and lets not even get started with PowerPoint and Access). So basically it sounds like they've spent a heck of money developing a system that would have cost far less than purchasing Office itself, in order to save far less money that it would have cost to purchase Word over the last 7 years.

Admittedly, some factories in China were using the inferior paint but for those that weren't, they got a raw deal.

First of all, I did point out that those were Java lectures. Whether or not it's killing MS is up for debate.

Secondly, I took up your request and viewed one of your presentations, the one on threading (thought it would be interesting - java 2, lecture 2).
You have some incorrect information out there, with regards to preemption.

If a thread with the same priority is waiting to run, the scheduler on the OS will take a round-robin approach. There is no thread starvation in a preemptive scheduler. This has been true since Windows 95* and for Unix-like systems as long as I can remember (though the caveat is that I don't know enough of Solaris' scheduler to know if what you said is true). I stopped reading at this point.

Lastly, while you are correct in your statement that it is easier to create Threads in java than C++ (and I don't understand what you mean by C# supporting a form of threading), how hard is it to call CreateThread and pass it a callback (for win32 threads anyway)?

*while pure win32 applications were subject to preemption, any calls to 16bit code (or 16bit applications) were not. The reason being is that the old 16bit Win3.1 threads were not re-entrant, therefore the scheduler was not able to preempt them.

Of course there are different types of Seargeant Majors, Regiment SMs, Brigade SMs, Area SMs, etc. Typically, these are staffed by people who have the rank of a Chief Warrant Officer, the highest non-commissioned rank we have in the army.
