Lots of reasons to give notice and not be walked out the door right away.
I have given notice as if I was a contractor. On one occasion I was about to finish up a project and they wanted to send me to a bunch of training for the next project. As I knew I would not be staying for much longer and when I moved on was flexible, I let them know I would be leaving soon so things were not delayed and wasting money.
I have also given notice well in advance to make changes in the company. They did not have anyone who could do my job while I was on vacation. And I knew I would be leaving in a year or so so I pushed on them (did not give notice, just nudged them)
In a good enviroment (rare but it happens) you can be leaving and need to push them to ler you train your replacement. Ideally the management would have this under control but I have worked in places where the adverage turnover rate was under a year.
OEM licenses are never supposed to be transfered unless it is an underwaranty repair. However, the transfer can be done if you sweet talk the Microsoft contractor. I think that if a client of mine got stuck this way, I would tell MS I had an extended waranty contract with them.
There was a policy announcement for Vista that full copies could only be transfered once, the outcry about this was such that MS announced that is was a mistake and that things would go back to the XP policy
Microsoft seems to be mostly interested in keeping wholesale piracy from occuring.
I do have a client who, when he couldn't activate the the license, called MS. They asked him some questions about the fine print numbers on the center of the CDROM! Not 100% sure what was going on as I was told about this after the fact but it did work eventually.
No you can not load these drivers off of a USB flash drive. The size (or something else) is not correct and XP will not recognise them. It will not find them of a CDROM either
You can (in the limited number I have tested) use a USB floppy drive and put the files on that and that will be detected durring the install
I believe that burning software breaks for two reasons.
They cheat and access low level routines and hardware
They want you to pay for a real copy and not keep using the OEM version that came with your drive so there is no real reason to try to guess what might work in the future
Based on what you have posted you should try the new office. They made of lot of interface improvement and they were based of of extensive analysis of what people used in the products. The one of ideas behind the ribbon was to present functions based on the frequency of use. To be organized in a logical and consistant way. What previous office upgrades have done was to add each new function to the menus in what ever place it will best fit at the time.
I have not used the new Word to produce a book or anything that requires TOC and such, I do know that that area has been rewritten and designed. They were attempting to address many of your complaints. There are also title pages done right (I hope)
Again, I have not done anything in Word 07 other than simple documents, but I have seen a couple of knock your socks off demos
If you: connect an epson usb printer and the system does not see it
can not access your SATA drive after 30 minutes of powered up time and not get a blue screen
if the performance rating program causes a blue screen
if you can not install the software for HP scanners because the software pukes on install and no ETA is given for a fix or for scanners being sold that are compatible....
Then you can conclude:
The Hardware vendors are not in a panic about getting drivers out for Vista.
note: Vista will talk to the scanner, but only using MS supplied drivers. this is all on fully lioensed copies of Vista (not beta)
Most slashdot folks are not old enough to remember things before the ADA. Lots of people complained bitterly about having to phase in curb cuts and ramps for wheelchair access when they started. They really used the same sort of words we see here.
If you don't think you would miss them, don't take advantage of them when biking, boarding, or rolling equipment arround. There were no curb cuts in most towns when I was born.
Currently the net is generally "net neutral" If I send a packet anywhere it can travel to its destination and back at the speed the pipes allow at that moment. With some exceptions* this is true of all packets
Lately some ISP's (generally US phone companies who have some local monopolies) have started looking at the contracts and agreements and have discovered that they are not required by law/contract to stay neutral. They may also want to limit competition from Voice Over IP and Internet Video (not that they would admit that)
So what they have done is start talking about charging companies (like Google, myspace, ect) extra or they will slow down or even block packets to the companies
The "net neutrality" legislation would prevent this change from being legal. and keep the status quo. The lobbyists are all over this issue like flies/lies on s....
*exceptions: some ISP's block some packets for security purposes. this includes but is not limited to our going email (spam) and incoming web services
Do they report the totals of the spoiled/write in candidates in the UK? (I actually believe they do)
Here in the US the only easy way to get the election results is in the press. I guess you could go to the court house or somewhere to get the official results. The press does not report the numbers for "unimportant candidates" (generally)
Note the top three candidates are listed to the last vote but no other totals are given. There were more than three candidates listed on the ballot by the way. And at least the campaign managers voted for them.
Reporting the vote totals for a national election incorrectly should get you more of a fine than 1/2 second of nipple!
I am tempted to write myself in on the next election and confirm I was counted as an audit of the process.
I would be worried about this approach. If they just give back the money in responce to the request from the credit card company, he losses the domain.
The certified letter or lawyer are the best approach
Ok, I've been married for over 20 years. We have no chance at all of having children in the home.
I have absolutely no idea of how allowing a gay marriage will dammage my relationship with my wife.
NO ONE has ever even attempted to answer the question. They just say that it does. I have even done some quick Googleing and struck out.
The closest I have seen is the argument that some employers will drop family benifits if it is not outlawed.
So can anybody even point me to a link on the web to anywhere that talks about this in a logical that even atempts to explain how I could be hurt by this?
There are lots of logical arguments the other way. The most valid of which is that we do not have close to a clear definition of what a man and a woman are legally or biologically
Want to mess with the students who boot off of CD to access the internet?
Set all the computers to use static addressing. (it helps to know what is on the network quickly anyway)
99.9% of users will try to use DHCP to get on the network the first time.
Then set up a bogus DHCP server. You can quickly tell anytime something new comes onto the network. Give them a bogus gateway address and they will not get onto the web. Point the DNS server address to a machine that returns all resquests for web site addresses to be the ip address of: http://www.cybercrime.gov/ or to a web page that asks for the students name and ID #:-)
Yes, they can get around this, but it will tell you the scope of the problem anyway. And if someone else wants to add a computer to the network they will most likely come to you to find out why it is broken.
You do require permission to put hardware on the network, don't you?
Setup individual accounts for each student. Anything else is insane as there is no way to discover who did what.
reimage each machine every night.
Make sure they are on a differnent subnet from all of the admin computers and that the only path to the admin computers from the labs is down through a router.
Files must be stored on a locked down server. Or students own USB drives.
Otherwise. Remove all the hard drives. Lock the door and update resume.
what happens if you insert signed code in kernel space and the signature is revoked?
The code can not be added to new machines -yes
does the code just not run? (this would be hard to believe) Does the machine no longer boot? is is removed automatically? do I need to run an update each year when the cert expires?
I can not be forced to check the cert status every time the code is envoked! The code might be needed for accessing the network...
I have to believe that it only matters at install time.
No they sell OSX and tell you that you can only run it on apple hardware.
I belive if you buy a copy of tiger and walk up to a scratch build machine you can install it without having to insert your older Mac disks to prove ownsership

Poser!!!! ;-)
It's all a matter of being extremely nearsighted.
Well, I got to go back to my sorting.
No, the policy of one transfer is not correct.
OEM licenses are never supposed to be transfered unless it is an underwaranty repair. However, the transfer can be done if you sweet talk the Microsoft contractor. I think that if a client of mine got stuck this way, I would tell MS I had an extended waranty contract with them.

Yes, The released version is faster by a visible amount over the betas/RCs on the same hardware.
So if I am flying over this is a hot air balloon, do I have permission to drop things on that roof?
I believe that burning software breaks for two reasons.
They cheat and access low level routines and hardware
They want you to pay for a real copy and not keep using the OEM version that came with your drive so there is no real reason to try to guess what might work in the future
Just my thoughts I could be wrong

Double click on a tab in the ribbon and the ribbon hides
there are LOTS of driver problems.

Access improvements in general help everyone.
Most slashdot folks are not old enough to remember things before the ADA. Lots of people complained bitterly about having to phase in curb cuts and ramps for wheelchair access when they started. They really used the same sort of words we see here.

Why not leave the site up, monitor it and "talk" to anyone who presents a boarding pass made on the site? You would have the name and flight info!
This is just being a bully instead.
Disclamer: I did not see the site when it was up so I have made some assumptions here which could be wrong.

A great thing to remove sticky remnants is peanut butter.
Apply just a little more than a four year old would, and then rub in a circular motion.
When the sticky is gone, remove the peanut butter with a damp cloth.
This works because the peanut butter has both oil and water based solvents in it.
Can't try this right now, but what happens if you set the PC screen resolution to 640 x 480?
No, but you are mostly correct.
