  1. nutrition on Exercise for Geeks? · · Score: 2

90% of getting into shape is nutrition. Stop eating pizza, and have a chicken breast and some rice or something. Also, if you're trying to gain muscle, divide your current weight by 1.5, this is the number of grams of protein you'll need a day to gain muscle most efficiently.

I use Isopure. It's the *ONLY* product that is totally 100% ion-exchange whey protein. Other brands have whey protein concentrate and totally suck compared to isopure. Also, you can mix it with a spoon, you don't need a blender.

You *may* want to look into taking Creatine if you're not seeing results in the first month. It works for some, but not for all. I'd read up on it before you take it. Creatine and protein powder are probably going to have the most effect for you. Of course, you need to eat right too. If you eat 6 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones, it will raise your metabolism and you'll lose fast quicker too.

Their "find businesses" thing can use it too, so you can find the closest gas station, restaraunt, or strip club.

But I'm probably a better person because of it.

  12. motorola phones suck on Motorola's i95cl · · Score: 2

I've had a couple motorola phones in the past, and all I can say is that they have sucked. Maybe the i95 is an exception, but motorola's UI systems have always been crap, and battery life is shit. 45 hours of standby and 2 hours talk? C'mon, that sucks ass. My Sony Ericcson T68i has 480 hours standby and 7 hours of talk time. Though reality is a little less, but not much.

Plus, the T68i is $149, not a whopping $399. It has all of the features that the i95 has except that walkie talkie crap. I can sync the thing with my PIM via IR or bluetooth, I can run a little outlook plugin thing just like the guy writing the article and access all of my Outlook crap in real time, or I can even load some pr0n on the phone to view when I'm bored or send to a friend who's feeling down.

$399 for a phone with poor battery life does not seem like a good deal to me. And that price is *with* service, if nextel is discounting this phone like most providers do, this thing is an insane ripoff. Save yourself the money and get a T68i with ATT, Voicestream, or Cingular service. It has the same features, in a ligher package, for less, and with the best battery life of any phone I've ever had.

Dell's acheived the holy grail of advertising. When most hear the words "new computer", they think Dell. If Dell offered a choice of OSX or Windows when buying a machine, it most certainly would be good for Apple. Dell's advertising campaigns are hugely successful, despite my overwhelming hatred for that "Dude, you're getting a Dell" guy.

By doing something like this, Apple maintains their hardware business, AND gets a major pc manufacturer to sell products that run OSX.

Use and old desktop (free) with snort (free) and use it as a firewall.

Using an old machine is fine for a small network, but anything that does a significant amount of traffic is going to need a fast machine. Trust me, I know. I've used snort for a couple of years and checking every packet that comes in against every rule is very processor intensive.

Also, running snort on a firewall is a stupid thing to do. Snort has had a couple of buffer overflow exploits in the past which would allow an attacker to get a shell on the box. Some admins are stupid and run snort as root, which is a big no-no. And even if they don't run as root, an attacker could use his non-root shell to perform a local root exploit and gain root access. While snort is a security program, that doesn't mean it's secure.

I've tried NFR and ISS, and both sucked bigtime, especially considering the outrageous pricing.

However, I noticed under periods of very high volume, I was losing nearly 50% of my log entries. Syslog-ng has the ability to use TCP for logging, so I switched, and I haven't lost any entries yet.

UDP is great for things you that aren't useful if retransmitted later, like real time apps (Quake, video streams, audio streams, etc.) But to ensure no loss at all, you need to use TCP.

I used ATT and TW as an example because I know for a fact that they have plenty of capacity. True though, there are many players bigger than two I mentioned that are likely in the same boat.

ATT's "list" prices for connectivity are outrageous, but they get very competitive if they think you'll go somewhere else. TW is small now, but they have the "last mile" advantage. Since they're in bed with TW cable, they can run their fiber along side CATV routes without having to get all the permits you'd normally need to dig up the streets, and in most cases, they can get by without digging (if you don't mind your fiber being run on poles, which does keep it out of the way of backhoes). TW may be a bit player for now, but they are growing fast and they have a pretty sweet infrastructure. And from what I've seen, their pricing is very competitive.

  25. haha on How Will WorldCom/UUNet Impact The Internet? · · Score: 2

Sidgmore said UUNet handles more than 50 percent of U.S. Internet traffic, including about 70 percent of all e-mails sent within the United States and half of e-mails sent in the world.

So, if they handle only 50% of all internet traffic, wouldn't it stand to reason that they also handle roughly 50% of all email? Given the amount of spam that I get that originates from UUNet, it's not surprising that the percentage of spam is much greater than their traffic as a whole. UUNet has been a haven for spammers since the dawn of the internet. They rarely disconnect spamming customers, and their larger "corporate" spammers enjoy a provider that won't hassle them since UUNet make a lot of money off them.

I, for one, won't feel a bit of sorrow if they go under. I don't think we'll have too much trouble. I know for a fact that Time Warner and ATT have *A LOT* of dark fiber right now, and a good portion of it is ready to be lit up because they know they're going to need to increase capacity soon. The tier-2 ISP's are going to be hardest by this since a very large percentage of them rely on their links to UUNet, hence, many tier-3 isp's will probably see issues also because of limits on their upstream providers network. For those of us with connections directly to other tier-1 providers, I doubt we'll see any problems.

I wonder if the number of spams I receive will drop if UUNet goes away...
