Wouldn't the actual "contract" be the Common Type System rather than the CLS?
I haven't looked that hard at the released CLI and see how the thing works downlevel, but I thought that, much as a typelib defines the COM contract, the CTS was the thing that enables marshalling, GC and so on regardless of the language. The CLS is more of a "you have to design your language so and so for it to work with the runtime" kind of thing.
The slashborks apparently couldn't take the "Slashdot is not compliant" jokes so they blocked requests from the validator. AFAIK it's been blocked for a while now.
Don't politicize your teaching. The last thing the world needs are more brain-blocked hysterical zealots.
Teach them what is good and what is bad about both sides of the fence (Linux/Microsoft/Everyone Else). Don't polarize things and say "MyOS is better than YourOS... because"
Don't give them crutches but don't overwhelm them. Show them how to work the damn thing off of a blinking cursor. If you don't have time to go into X and GUI stuff in general, don't worry. If everyone started with a command line the world would be a better place (and support reps would have more hair). At the same time, don't try to go into how bootstrapping works - just stimulate their appetite. If they're good for it, they'll take the next step by themselves.
Teach them what is good about open source and why it exists and what it's all about. Don't let them grow up to be confused thinking that "free" means "I should get everything for free" instead of "freedom"
I think it's very cool that there are people out there who feel passionately enough about a goot TV program to fork over money and keep it running.
However, if this actually takes off, I believe it will not set a good precedent (AFAIK this is not being done anywhere else, unless I'm mistaken, please feel free to correct me).
Think about it - the SciFi channel is not free. I already pay ~$50 for cable... and in order to enjoy a show I like I have to pay even more??? What's next? Viewer-supported Buffy The Vampire Slayer? Does anyone think low-life TV execs (which are no better than record company ones) are not going to see this and go oooohh! Let's threaten to cut Zim The Invader and start raking up the dough!!!
It's a noble cause, assuming I can pick it up using an antenna. Otherwise it's a bad idea.
I love it when you people get bogged down in your own phylosophical tar pits.
No, you have it all wrong. See? It's not like that at all. I'm just changing the definition right now to make a point, but bare with me. "Free" is not "free" but rather "open". See? And "open" means "free" in the sense that "free" tends to also be "open". Get it? No? Oh, you must be a M$ advocate then, fuck off.
Gosh, you misunderstand me. I'm not trying to compare bugs or vulnerabilities or their significance or even their seriousness.
Read my post again. Slowly. Then read it again. And then, if you understand what I was trying to say, post an intelligent reply. Otherwise keep your insight to yourself. Your attempt to rationalize whatever it is you conceived as my slight towards everybody's favorite OS was a waste of time and keyboard lubricant.
If this is your typical posting, yes.
ROFLMAO, and you even added me to your "foes" list - how charming.
Even more remarkable is the fact that these stories always somehow fail to make the front page, while every 2-cent obscure vulnerability discovered in Internet Explorer and IIS are shoved front and center.
Slashdot needs a bit more balance in the way it covers things. If this had been a problem with the goddamn filesystem (!) in Windows you'd be seeing 900 posts to the tone of "Hah! M$ sucks!!!1!!".
Wasn't that Dr. Pepper?? I swear I can make out 'per' in the middle right end of the pic. [trembling] Slobber [/trembling]
All Real Programmers (TM) know Dr. Pepper is the shit when it comes down to separating the men from the boys.
Definitely integral to surviving those 35-hour debugging bugfest sprees armed with nothing more than a butter knife, some scotch tape and an MP3 player.
Those who emerge from that hell with six functional brain cells (or more) are theretofore respectfully acknowledged as members of the Order Of The Pepper Willies, bless our tender hearts.
Oh great REAL insightful, adn YOUR complaining about my moderation?!
You can't even spell... you shouldn't be moderating.
Oh, but wait. That would leave a total of six people to moderate from the available pool of Slashdot readers. Never mind then, carry on.

Dude, a word of advice - don't let this "moderation" thing get to your head. It's really not a position of power, nor is it the most important thing in the world. Take a deep breath, and most importantly, stick your mod points and stick them where the sun don't shine.
People like you (moderators on crack) are one of the reasons why/. has been going down the drain lately.
And I expect this to be modded to heck, but I hope you read it (since you're too goddamn chicken to post as yourself and burn some "precious karma") and try to understand what I'm saying.
Trust me, the last thing I need to hear is why you people moderate as bad as you do. I'd rather you keep your opinions to yourselves and just get on with playing god from afar. It's so much cleaner and painless that way.

C'mon moderators on crack, this is funny. Did you watch the fscking trailer? Don't be so anal.
I find myself constantly amazed at how people here can find a Microsoft "angle" in just about anything.
Whether it's 10th century celtic music, the real story behind Pikachu, alternative uses for body fluids, stem cell research, 1337 case mods or new-age agriculture in Tanzania, there's always someone who manages to slip in a non sequitur about the Evil Empire.
... that these anti-leech folks are kinda weird? Does anyone know where they are located? Their "english" seems a bit... off. If you read the FAQ there's a sidebar that compares them with Google (of all things), with a blurb about Goggle being a huge multinational or something like that. Eh?
Also their "technology" is not really effective at all. The bit where they claim to protect the HTML source of a page is absolutely ridiculous and simple to circumvent. Do they actually sell this crap??
Maybe it's just me, but they seem... well, weird. Kinda like those EARN $5,000,000 IN JUST THREE DAYS BY STUFFING ENVELOPES deals. Dunno. Maybe it's just me.
Oh, and the FAQ page tried to install some Gator scumware on load. I bet they did it because they knew the FAQ was going to get hit, because none of the other pages in the site did that.
It's just the groundless, useless and irresponsible by-the-seat-of-your-pants-let's-put-this-out-there -and-see-what-happens "editorial comment" of the day.
And they do this when customers are thinking of using IBM. And Oracle. And CA. And Sun. And Dell does the same thing wrt HP. And the other way around, and ad nauseaum.
And those other companies? They do the same things when customers start getting evil thoughts of moving to Microsoft. Or one of the other companies, ad nauseam.
They used to be the shit for mass storage. ESDI, MFM, you name it, they made them and made them well. Sniff.

I find that insulting, sir. I mean, how can you... er... ummm...
Ohhhhh! Puppies!!!

- Profit!!!
(ok, the last two were a joke. Just the last two)That way, AIDS and smallpox and ebola and all those other nasty, pesky diseases won't have a chance!
Just look out for white trucks with a 'UN' logo.
Bummer. That's the only post-Transformers/GI Joe/Robotech cartoon I actually found entertaining.

Well, that and CmdrTaco.
Now, how does your explanation relate to doing it as opposed to knowing how to do it?
It's not the technique, it's the art. Not necessarily my kind of thing to be honest, but still kinda wacky and interesting. And art nonetheless.

It's called "business". But it's not "news".
