The problem with escrow is that if your company does go under, the judge overseeing the bankruptcy proceedings may very well decide that the only thing of value left for your investors happens to be the code, and thus subject to be sold as an asset along with your Aero chairs and blade rackmounts.
And of course, the buyer of the code may not be interested in releasing it to your (former) customers. Many companies don't trust source escrow for that very reason, not to mention that source code alone does absolutely nothing for me if I'm missing the skill that went into creating it in the first place.
This is interesting but in most modern democracies (method of government to which I assume the Danish subscribe) search warrants have to be obtained and served by members of the Judicial branch... are these people part of the police? The army? Non-profit organization? The Danish Boy Scouts?
If not, I hope the RIAA doesn't try the same tactics over here... instead of meeting Mr. Joe The Pirate (arrr matey!) they'd have a rather grave encounter with Mr. Remington the.12 Gauge Shotgun.
This is slander! This is not possible!!1! I humbly submit to this woman that she needs to get her facts straight because the strict Slashdot editorial process would eliminate any chance of that... happening... and... uh... er...
Actually it was called "data reduced schema" (XDR) and it was created by the SOAP/BizTalk folks because the W3C hadn't approved XSD yet when the 2.5 version of MSXML was released.
As of version 4.0 of their parser XDR is still supported but deprecated, and they're recommending everyone use (or upgrade/convert to) XSD instead. Full support for XSD has yet to make it to the full BizTalk server product, though.
I suppose I can agree on the XML bit... the fact that it's not Turing complete shouldn't make a difference. People smarter than myself have spent barrels of keyboard lubricant on this so let's not go there =)
XSD is not a "language" any more than XML is. XSLT I suppose can be considered one.
I think misrepresentations like these from story submitters ultimately detract from the overall quality of the articles and I'm sure that the author wouldn't be all too thrilled about it.
It's akin to those Costco salespeople who tell me that the "shweet" HP computer over there has 20GB of "RAM". It looks a bit dumb given the target audience.
Who modded this up? The Windows Messenger is a network-level service, not an instant messaging application and has absolutely nothing to do with MSN Messenger or any other IM client from Yahoo or anyone else.
No, it was merely an advanced concept that's commonly called an "example".
Sarcasm!
Name me any Windows API, library, or technology that was current five years ago, and is current today. The same thing can be said about _each and every_ Windows API.
Actually, you have it all backwards, probably because you don't really know what you're talking about. Please name *one* core Windows API that was in Windows 95 and is not supported in Windows XP. Please, just one.
Microsoft may tell me that I should use the registry instead of INI files, but that doesn't mean that the INI APIs are removed. In fact, even from Win3x, the only APIs that were removed were those that dealt with segmented memory allocation and a few obsolete GDI calls that dealt with 16-bit coordinate systems. Though that doesn't mean that they're not supported anymore. In fact, I run Corel DRAW 3.0 under Windows XP Pro almost every day, just fine.
Whether you [like it|care|know] or not, Microsoft has been a model of backwards compatibility for years, with the possible exception being DOS (and good riddance, IMO). On the other hand, one can hardly fault them for expanding and enhancing everything with each iteration of the OS. I sure don't.
everything becomes obsolete, and all the time you've spent learning it is gone completely to waste
Again, you're confusing software engineering skills with technical know-how. Perhaps in your mind they're the same, but they're really not.
You have got to be kidding me. "DAO and VBX"?? Is that what you consider to be the full spectrum of Windows-based development?
What in Unix are you comparing your experience in Windows to? Bash scripts? Perl/CGI? Or kernel hacking?
In any case, if you are confusing the *technologies* you use while developing software with your analysis and design skills (which are the same regardless of the language, technology or OS you happen to use), I'd say you have other, more pressing problems than being disillusioned with any given platform.
Their service, their rules. Or is this any different from Westwood Online or Blizzard.net?
The fact that they're banning modded consoles is irrelevant - and this story is here only because, for some reason, some at/. has decided that Microsoft has no right to maintain control over the hardware they sell - just like Sony and Sega.
Join the club. Between this and the 24x7 'M$' bashing, I had it with this place.
I went from 'Excellent' karma (+50) to 'Terrible' in about three days, with a subnet block to boot due to "excessive negative moderation" or some such.
That's nice. I've seen Windows 2000 AS boxes with uptimes of 113 days, just hummin' along without a single problem. Some of the heavier-use boxes get rebooted _on schedule_ on Sunday mornings every 59 to 64 days, and only because most people still can't get over the fact that W2K is _not_ NT4, which was a piece of crap. Actually the only time you need to reboot a W2K server is to apply a patch. If you have them in clusters you can kick one at a time and have exactly ZERO downtime. That's ZERO unplanned downtime, nach.
So as the other poster said, you can put that in your pipe and smoke it.
All you GNU hipies and Open Sores lusers can bite me and everyone else that enjoys and uses Microsoft products day after day without having our intelligence insulted by 1337 h^xx0rz whose sole claim to fame are skin diseases and a fucking command line.
Once again, your lame and ineffective zealotry proves worthless, and reason prevails.

Just a though.
Hmmm. I'd rather impress the mormons and strike fear into the hearts of the neighbors.

That didn't get you much karma, did it?

If you're going to FUD, get your facts straight.
XSD however, is most definitely not a language.

Oh, wait. Wrong topic.
then at least they won't need christmas lights...
