Exactly, I dont like Sony, but the PS3 is a unique experience, unavailable from any other vendor. Im probably not going to go out and buy a Sony TV, or cell phone or computer because there is ample competition and thre is nothing really unique about those items.

there are multiple references to the PS3 as a "unique experience" in this thread. Is there some marketing campaign that I have managed to avoid or are there astroturfers on slashdot?

oh wait ... it is the same person each time ... who do you work for ?

AS much as I dislike Sony, Im not going to deny myself a fantastic piece of hardware for it. Im the one who loses, not really Sony. Now i probably wont buy a Sony TV, or pretty much anything else Sony, but the PS3 is a unique experience, with games that cant be had anywhere else.

I am not sure about a due care type of law in the US. A few years back, some idiot was watching a dvd in his pickup truck and killed another driver. The specific act was not written as illegal yet, so he got off without any big charges against him. If lawyers can use this defense, then the laws are unfortunately going to have to be written out explicitly as what is not allowed to be done.

If you have proper backing ... Go to the users boss after you have completed the request, but before the user has been informed that everything is fixed. Hopefully this is before the imposed deadline. Explain to the boss that you have gone far out of your way, and that you have gone beyond expectations, but this is not to be thought of as expected response to every issue, and that you would like to delay informing the user of completion until a reasonable amount of time has passed. Now that users boss is aware that the issues exist, and can allow you to delay if the issue is not as big of a deal as the user thinks. This lets the user's boss set expectations of their employee's actions, where the IT person often insults users with belligerence when telling people that dont report to them how to act. When the bosses start to respect you, their employees will start to respect you.
