It is obvious to me that your problem isn't poor quality disks, it is Linux. I have several of the same hard drives you mention in several different PCs. All of them are still working perfectly well after six months of steady use, execpt for the one I put in the Debian machine that use as a coffee table. (I put Debian on it to scare kids this Halloween)
The disk in that computer is completely screwed up. I think the problem may lie in the fact that Linux has no decent journaling file system, whereas Microsoft has had one for a decade.
You must not be a Linux user. The desktop versions of Linux have been obsolete since PalmOS came out of beta.

Linux PDAs will 'get their break' about the same time that Linux gets one on the desktop. (read: NEVER) In the meantime they will be relegated to pointless Slashdot vaporware articles and the homeless shelters where Linux 'hackers' do their work.
As a side note, I hear that newest PDA version of Windows (Pocket PC) is more stable, featureful, and supports more hardware than any Linux distro around.
Using two of my Karma Whore accounts I modded down your original post. I did it because I felt that you were calling into question the integrity of a corporate supporter of Open Source, IBM, thus being trollish. I added the Offtopic moderation because I also felt that you using this new article to dredge up old, unimportant, and barely related material from the past.
This is certainly a truism. European cell phones are typically about the size of a loaf of bread and weigh around 9 pounds. This is because the English government can afford only two cell towers, one is in a swamp in Wales and the other was destroyed in a soccer riot.
No article about cell phones would be complete without some dumbass bringing up SUVs.
When you look in the rearview mirror of your Fiesta can you even see me up there in my Expedition? I figured you people would only be able to see the grille.
So your decision as to which OS is better is based on whether or not you are able to play a game while installing? Ignoring your obvious stupidity, I'll answer.
I was able to play a game while installing Windows just last week, when I put WinXP on one of my home machines. I played Thief 3 on my desktop while WinXP was being installed on my MP3 server. Not quite the same as what your example cites, but those of us who can afford decent operating systems can usually afford more than 1 PC.
Yuo people aren't jumping the gun because yuo can't jump the gun in a race that yuo aren't even in.
Windows 2000 raised the bar in the server market so far above anything Linux has to offer that you can't even see it. Mac OSX came along and did something similar for the desktop, while Windows XP will push it up again for both servers and desktops. There was a time, back when the Linux crowd was really focused on making things easier on the user, instead of preserving geekiness, that the gap narrowed. Microsoft recognized that and pushed ahead full bore, Windows 2000 was the result.
You people are so far behind now that Microsoft could not release another new product for 5 years and still be better than you. You can't agree on anything, there are a thousand people working on a thousand redundant projects, all of them behind Microsoft in terms of usefulness, because they can't agree on a color scheme. You'll never catch up.
My problem with newspapers is that they put far too many words inside quotation marks, thus pissing off most intelligent readers. Maybe if their writers had a better command of the language there would be no need to commit such grammatical atrocity.
Yeah, those McDonalds employees are pretty strict about that 'no loitering in the bathrooms' policy.

Yeah, right up until someone modifies Debian or Mandrake to run on PocketPC's and wreck their wireless connections:
Executive 1: Hmmm... My PDA is being slow today. I wonder why?
Executive 2: Why can't I open my .doc files?
Executive 3: Boy, my GUI sure is ugly. It never used to look like-- AAAHHH!!! IT'S LINUX! I'M A COMMUNIST!
I agree with your little scenario 100%.

Please try to do better next time.

I bet not.
Windows 2000 offers remote desktops. In stark contrast to xdmcp, the Microsoft service actually works.
No I don't, I was drunk that day. Its OK though because I didn't fly out until later that night.
You are thinking of oil tanker captains, not pilots. Different industry entirely.
Unless, of course, you use someone else's finger.

Except that 95% of the corporate desktops out there are running Windows. They don't need to be rebooted every morning like your Linux boxes.
Keep working with Open Source software. You'll be a poor, starving developer in no time.
I apologize for attempting to Karma Whore. broody is one of my accounts, please mod me down as Redundant.
Thank you for you time.

Luckily the US now has a government that has dedicated itself to wiping the earth clean of zealotry in any form.
If you ever got within 50 yards of me I would beat your ass so badly that the dog pound wouldn't even take you.

Will it run on WinXP?
