I wouldn't call continually starting projects they have no intention of finishing evil. It is more like the corporate version of ADD. People ask me why I dont use more Google services even though I have an android phone. Unless a google service is funded by an external entity, you never know if it is going to be around once you start to rely on it.
I always use 8.8.8.8 (one of Google's DNS servers) as an emergency backup when I cannot reach mine.
Also, a lot of linux distros do support DHCP, which is a good way to get the settings before manually configuring. (which may not be an option in your situation)
That's not a joke, BTW. So every time you really have to defecate and some greedy business or city has installed a pay toilet, you can thank John Nevil Maskelyne--the noble inventor who pioneered the idea of charging people a penny to take a shit.
You mean These*? They're mainly an attempt to solve the 'drunk people pissing everywhere' issue that requires expensive cleanup, i.e. a cost-saving rather than a philanthropic gesture.
*The only reason I didn't use the clip set to the Thunderbirds March was because it didn't show the complete raise-lower sequence. It is truly unfortunate that they do not actually play this when activated.
I wonder how many people piss themselves for waiting for the thing to pop up. Also it saddens me that there is no music involved.
So I am lost... one one hand I have people with the very latest greatest and likely overpriced computers telling me how much better they are than I. On the other I have people with computers several generations old telling me how much better they are than I. Its like a fight between hipsters and audiophiles, there are no winners, only losers.
You didn't address the question: What constitutes authority? From my perspective an authority is any person with reasonable skills to complete the task and has some say in the direction of matters. I would definitely trust a person to make conscious decisions based on their expertise while it *sounds* like you'd prefer to have an amateur running the show so long as they spill every detail regardless of its validity and confirmed presence.
As a motorcyclist since the 80s, let me assure you there was no shortage of people trying to kill us motorcyclists before the advent of cell phones.
Look, this is pretty straight forward. Show me a graph of car accidents as a function of year, then superimpose the percent population with cell phones as a function of year over it. If you see the number of accidents increase at the same rate as the percent population with cell phones, I'll buy that cell phones are the hazard people claim. But even though there are more drivers today then in the past, the number of fatal accidents over the last 15 years has decreased. Sure, cars are safer now, and that accounts for some of the decrease, and I'm sure advanced Emergency response techniques also accounts for some of it.
Point is, show me the data. The data I've seen doesn't support the claim that cell phones are as dangerous as they claim.
I think you underestimate just how safer cars are these days. Now that far fewer people are driving giant land yachts with zero crumple zones you see much less fatalities.
Even total accidents should go down as almost all vehicles produced in recent times have ABS and traction control.
it is much more dangerous to eat-while-driving than text-while-driving
Now, at first I would say that I don't believe that for a second. However I suppose it depends on what you are eating/drinking. I often eat a granola bar on my way to work. The picture at your link is certainly foolish and stupid since the guy looks like he needs more than 2 hands just to eat that thing, much less hold food and drink at the same time. But eating a candy bar or drinking from a properly contained drinking vessel is perfectly fine, as long as it is done when it is safe to do so and not trying to make some sort of menuver.
However I was standing at a corner waiting to cross the street when I saw a guy driving a car and eating breakfast. Cereal, from a bowl, with a spoon. Perhaps they are on to something here with calling for a general ban.
Given all it takes is someone to claim "my former significant other scares me and is a threat to my well being" for a judge to issue one and they instantly restrict one's freedom of speech, freedom of travel, and the right to keep and bear arms until otherwise contested (which may be days) they are already a serious threat to freedom. In some locations all it takes is a verbal argument and for one participant to call the cops, regardless of who started it or the facts of the case; only claims made matter.
Or you could leave your ex the fuck alone. If they try to get a restraining order on you and there is no evidence you have had contact... I doubt anyone would buy into it. Notable exceptions are rubber-stamp approvals (I have no idea how scrutinized these things are) and custody battles (ugly, knock down drag out fights).
...This is what has blown my mind about America in the past when I've visited, population of 1/3rd of a billion and every single one thinks they are somehow special, it's what gives America it's character I guess...
This is a 3rd world mentality. Most Americans believe in a classless society, everyone should be allowed to prosper and succeed. Sadly it isn't really the case here, but at least the average person can live comfortably.
Now, do Americans over consume when compared to other westerners (much less the rest of the world)? Absolutely, yes.
The question isn't how do we bring everyone down to the same level, it is how do we raise everyone to a higher standard of living without running us out of resources?
... the western economic model is a giant ponzi scheme based on getting people to buy more and more crap they don't need - ie growth. One day its going to collapse - badly - but the head in the sand economists just don't want to know.
This is right-on and correct, and any time the western economies have not been growth-based, depressions and recessions hit.
The worst part is that half the existing green technologies / treaties are just ways to funnel government money into the pockets of private companies. How do we tell which companies are actually developing useful technologies and which are just trying to get a government handout?
You wouldn't say that if you lived within artillery range of an irrational enemy. If war ever broke out the thousands of artillery pieces aimed at Seoul would level the city within hours.
The design, wording and overall presentation of that banner is brilliant. The site appears to have been (hopefully briefly) slashdotted. But they have an emblem for "American Censorship Day" across from one for the "Great Firewall". Fantastic juxtaposition. Bravely and skillfully done all around - to post this just after having gotten the domain back.
The video is pretty cool too. Not only is it informative but hopefully the graphics help the average person that doesn't understand.
Not that I think it will work, or that I think the average american will do anything other than just shrug when one of us talks about copyright reform.
..."Homer Simpson"? Because it sounds like their plants are run about as well as the one on The Simpsons.
Not Homer, for this one, but Monty Burns - his lack of vision and expenditure on proper staffing levels, properly trained staff and adequate security are secondary to his accumulation of wealth
"What?!? Smithers did a gaggle of unwashed hippies just enter our plant and hang a banner without my approval? Not ehhxcellent.
But I'm not sure that really fits the French in this case. More like blind optimism they have everything under control and nothing could ever go wrong.
What are you going to do, release the hounds? Or release the bees? Or release the hound with bees in their mouths, so that when they bark they shoot bees at you?
They're evil?

Thanks, mythbuster, but I will get my science from actual studies instead of one guy trying to hit one datapoint.
That's not a joke, BTW. So every time you really have to defecate and some greedy business or city has installed a pay toilet, you can thank John Nevil Maskelyne--the noble inventor who pioneered the idea of charging people a penny to take a shit.
And, as an American, god bless you Committee to End Pay Toilets in America--for keeping this scourge mostly out of the land of the free crapper.
So the guy was the first troll as well.

"...and even cylcon symbols by Australia's Aborigines which can be up to 20,000 years old." ... I had no idea BSG was a documentary!
Holy crap
There is some evidence that there was a "nuclear" war in India thousands of years ago. See http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/ancientatomicwar/esp_ancient_atomic_07.htm I'm not sure what to make of it but it is interesting.
Here is the only ancient nuclear reactor.
The tower comes up to his waist.
Less languages than a nomad, Lame.
The fossils have divided palaeontologists for over a decade
I see what you did there.

YOU ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE, SLASHDOT
In fact, forget the joke....
you realize how dangerous and punishing on the human body football itself is, right?
Exactly, now add a very body abusing steroid regime, and you wont see a retired football player above the age of 50.

I am an authority on not trusting authority.
Don't trust me.

I thought the only way to win slashdot was to have a post rated "+5 Troll"?

Moderating a Funny post Informative, that should be illegal.
Just get us self-driving cars already so that this and a number of related problems go away.
Aye! Or please dramatically increase available public transportation: you can talk, text, sext, sexy-talk, read, whatever. Ultimate freedom!
And people wonder why nobody wants to take public transportation.

I used to reply to posts on slashdot, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
When are you guys going to fix the extremely broken, gamed, and unworking moderation system?
You got modded down. Looks like the moderation system works to me!
