    This is a real cost. I get a ton of those "so and so said not to open blah blah....pass it on..." messages

    So... what you are implying is that you should only make sure your virus scanners are up to date is AFTER the virus infects your network? Get a decent virus scanner that will get its updates automatically, right from the vendor, even over 'raw' internet. Problem solved.

    Real* sucks rocks! As much as I hate MS, I would much rather deal with Media Player that that peice of crap. That is one app I NEVER want to see again

    No, they won't. They simply use it because it is there, its the default app, and does the job, however horribly, that they need. 'Most' users, anyway.

    OTOH, if YOU install it for them, and make it the default, they will happily use it and learn its features.

    Unfortunately, even installing the simplest of software still scares the crap out of a lot of people. Or even saving a copy of a document to a floppy disk instead of in their My Documents folder is totally over their head.

    Unfortunatly, not the only guy... :(

    The local cable company refuses to put cable modem in, and as the city farts recently extended their contract by another 10 years, it doesn't look too good for getting it anytime in the forseeable future. SBC won't upgrade their equipment in our town either. All I can ever get is a blah blah not scheduled blah blah. Except for the last time I spoke to a rep on another matter she screwed up I think because she specifically said they weren't expanding the service much anywhere, because legislation they wanted didn't get passed.

    Try doing that for a billion? galaxies each with a billion? stars.
    Not sure what the callculated count of galaxies and stars per galaxy is up to now, but I am sure it has increased greatly since Hubble.

    Besides the rpm, apt-get, and source based package management distros, isn't there still the sysv init versus the bsd init difference between a lot of them?

    For starting and stopping services, I know that at least Redhat uses the 'service' command, at least Suse uses the 'rc command', and other distros may or may not use other commands.

    Then there's initd versus xinitd... xinitd seems much better to me.

    I am pretty sure that it isn't a REAL big deal, but when you have used one style for years it can definately be a preference to stick to...

    There ought to be a handy-dandy simple chart of things like this for (at least most) all the distros. And what the majority use versus who the rebels are on each. Or maybe there is one?

    I know it's a different topic, but this reminds me of something I saw a few years back on Discovery channel or the Learning channel. They made what was, or at least looked like, solid smoke. It looked as if someone froze time, whent in a heavily cigarette smoke filled room, and simply cut a cube of it out Completely transparent other that looking like a cube of wispy smoke.
    Although I can't recall what they called it or exactly what it was composed of, they went through the process of making it. They also has a sheet of the stuff and a guy stood on one side of it while they used a blowtorch on the other side of it aimed at him. Dissapated the heat instantly, and almost no wieght to it either.
    Anyway, my question is, does anyone else here know what I am referring to? I'd like to look into it more.

    Couldn't they actually go after the retards who actually bought one of those $699 licenses since they now DO have a contract with SCO? As in the first time thet suspect they compiled a kernel from source, as they have only a 'binary' license?

    Couldn't get the files in time??? This thing has been going on now for almost a year. Shouldn't they have already 'gotten' these files form those people up front, i.e. before the suit was filed, so they could have some basis for which to file the suit in the first place????

    Read just about any EULA from any proprietary software from any company anywhere in the world. Read many of them. Then come back and tell us which ones do... :)

    They all pretty much say "...you can't sue us no matter what, even though/if our software sucks rocks..."

    Actually, IBM is countersuing SCO.

    Also, SCO does not have to positively prove squat. They simply have to be successful enough in their arguments to sway a judge to side with them. I don't know how computer literate the judge is, but the less technically knowlegable he is the better SCO's chances are.

    It seems to me the easiest, least costly, least annoying solution to this 'problem' is that the Oscar people only include for voting on in the current 'Oscar Year' films that have made their full public viewing runs buy a date certain. If you want to be a 'screener' go to the theater like everybody else. This would COMPLETELY negate the need to send out those special DVD's.
    Problem solved.

    OTOH, I guess it's just more fun to have chaos and controversy running rampant, eh?

    Not exiting is a good rule, as long as the parents don't make it a habit of 'swooping in' just to read the screen all the time... unless they have a reason to believe something bad is going on, but the occasional spot check is fine, regardless of what the minor child thinks about the perceived 'privacy invasion'. Really, do you examine the contents of everyones screen everywhere when you walk up to talk to the person at the keyboard? Unless the AIM goes DING! to bring it to my attention while I am standing there I never give it a thought, unless that was the specific reason I went there.
    Remember, Mom and Dad can ALWAYS remove the network connection, or the whole computer, if it becomes a problem, and the child should keep that in mind!

    Do YOU know what expunged means? I didn't, until I started working at the Courthouse. It is a comman fallicy that when records are 'expunged' they are destroyed. Actually, they are removed from the publicly available index system, and the physical records are stored in a different place, but they ARE available for law enforcement agencies to peruse if they feel so inclined... This applies to Missouri, other places may vary...

    I wonder how this book rates with NON GUI subjects. Of the last several books I looked at on RH8, not a single one touched on command line stuff more than an occasional teaser here or there. When you are using one as a headless server, not only no monitor, but X not even installed, all these GUI centric books don't help one iota. It seems like either the authors don't have a clue as to how to administer one via the keyboard, or they just choose to take the 'easy' way to a quick buck.
