    Obviously not everyone will pay for the service just for stern, however they will probably enjoy the other 150 channels they can listen to.

    Satellite radio is the bomb. I'm never going back, and I will never support XM unless clear channel gets some balls.

    Guess you don't watch the news here.. we have kids taking guns from police officers to school and killing dozens of people.

    We have people who tape over there mouths to protest someones dying wish

    we have people who think there is such thing as "conservative" and "moderate republican" still.

    We have people who think freedom is guns and freedom is fear and the really sad part is people preferr that.

    I'd take a little bit of english heritage anyday over the biggotry of GWB's administration

    Get a phone and set a speed dial of 911 (to dial your local emergency services) or call up your service provider and ask about the services before you signup.

    In this case i think the family is entirely wrong as the last thing i would want my daughter to do is put herself in harms way by dialing 911 in the middle of an armed robbery.

    Teach your kids to go to your neighboors house and seek an adult before attempting to teach them to take matters into there own hands.

    Even in the case of fire and such, don't tell your kids to stay on the phone. get out to SAFETY FIRST.

    PS, all cell phones of the past few years are enabled for 911 even if you don't pay for service. Keep an old phone around for emergencies if you have to.

    Easy to find what i'm looking for, more organized and less of a hassle.

    Sure they don't have all texts on there, but the Yahoo search seems to do a better job grabbing the free texts out there to begin with.

    Ahem, through guiddance and administration you can learn the limits or IMPOSE your own limits.

    What limits set artificially by the kernel vendor will not scale from an end user running on a p733 that "forkbombs" with 20 processes and someone running on a quad opteron that would scale to 20k processes.

    I can put a bigger motor, larger tanks and extend the wings on my airplane as well, but i still have to re-certify and test those limits and KNOW them before i risk myself flying.

    Just because some things are automated doesn't mean they make sense or that solves the problem altogether for everyone.

    What exactly was that point? I can "forkbomb" my car by filling it up with too much crap, i can "forkbomb" my airplane by exceeding it's design limitations.

    I guess my point is certain limits are by design and its up to operator training and guidance on how to work with those limits to make sure they don't exceed them.

    I'm not scared of google, but people are "scared" of microsoft. I just don't understand the "faith based" trust of google but absolute despise for others.

    Google "scares" me more than others because they have the most restrictive policies from any standpoint and you DON'T KNOW what they do with the data because YOUR NOT ALLOWED TO TALK ABOUT IT.

    How do you know the ads are 100% targeted based upon keyword? How do you know they don't use the data they DO collect to build the product and service THEY OWN?

    I find it highly unreasonable to assume your data is safe because they say it is and that is the issue i want to bring up irregardles of the company behind it.

    We are talking about internet marketing here. Even I, the lowly webmaster know how to "Data mine" my logs and my visitors to target more efficiently to generate more revenues.

    You think a PUBLIC company with INVESTORS to satisfy isn't going to do this?

    What you don't know about google and accept for whatever faith reasons you have is scary.

    Google has more data then we could ever dream up. What they do with it is often illegal for people to discuss because of agreements that are made between publishers & advertisers and 3rd parties they work with.

    Even ads here are tracked. I would be suprised of the partner of sites here don't use the data to define demographics and details of the customer and are part of the "value add" of marketing here.

    Yeah, but remember Yahoo groups is actually easy to use and USEFULL. Google groups "you get what you pay for".

    That gmail interface makes 0 sense for google groups . I would rather deal with the banner ad on yahoo groups or use firefox to block them out.

    It's funny how you portray "intrusive" and use something that is less usefull based on that interpreation.

    You can always buy you way out of the ads if you are so inclined as to use the service.

    If i believed what you are saying then that would mean i have no reason to come back here.

    If i believed for one second that the world was perfect your saying would be true, but it isn't. We have our differences but we obviously have our collective indifferences that bring us back time after time.

    The FSF and EFF don't always go in the realm that slashdot does (or the community wants it to do).

    Your idea of politics doesn't jive with anything that exists today. Nothing is black & white. Simply ignoring the power of the community because you may not agree with 100% of it is worse off than taking action you may not always agree with.

    The PAC wouldn't have to be funded through the commercial efforts of the site but through contributions and efforts outside of that. Obviously a PAC means much more when its "grass roots" based and i think with the size of the community here that could be a sizeable force - not of just money but people with talent & experience to make a difference (whom are willing to do so)

    Exactly,

    My idea of a PAC isn't to segregate ourselves from the others that exist, but use our collective voices to support existing groups under an umbrella reflective of the "grass roots geeks". EFF, Aclu, Citizen works and other groups do a fanstastic job and a new PAC could align on issues they agree with but also stand for issues specific to this community.

    The collective force of Slashdot is strong

    It's not a duplication of effort when "SlashPAC" could fund EFF issues (or any other foundation) that are inline with the goals of the PAC.

    Yahoo is the most organized "portal" on the net.

    If your doing research it is much easier to find what you are looking for on yahoo than anywhere else.

    Need a new car? Yahoo Autos, Need a new Job? Yahoo HotJobs, need to do some research? Education.yahoo.com

    Want to follow business, stocks, rss feeds, news, local weather, auctions, bank accounts, investments? My.yahoo.com.

    I'm not sure you even know what easy to use and customer friendly means. I can contact Yahoo help on yahoo messenger to find out about a yahoo auction, i can lookup my buddies, do an address lookup and follow everything through in Yahoo without having to "google for it". Infact Yahoo is so easy, so quick that its funny to see Google trying to catchup. Google can only add so much more before it looks worse or exactly like yahoo.

    Not sure what your talking about but anywhoo, i'll take your bait and run.

    1. Searches are sponsored ads, just like google.
    2. Portal content is much more organized, familiar and standardized - much better than Google.
    3. The ads aren't just garbage. If your looking for hot dates in the singles section you see singles ads. If your looking for cars in the auto section you see auto ads.

    I find it laughable that Yahoo light years ahead of Google in content & design & integration & features & ease of use gets blasted and yet google praised for features that are completely lackluster and so yesterday.

    Obviously in todays political environment Money Talks. Is there any interest in the collective pool of technically minded folks from Slashdot starting a Political Action Committee in the sense that we support progressive, technological and scientific issues & candidates with our money and not just our collective angst?

    SlashPAC if you will.

    It would be a great place for us to consolidate our beliefs (wiki) and put our money where our mouth is to support politics and issues that reiterate our beliefs and values as a community.

    It would make calls for help like this easier to answer and give us some strength to lean on.

    The previous poster is not being stupid, you are. In case you hadn't noticed the geko engine is part of the mozilla suite (core component). I would imagine this if anything will slow down the development of that engine and anything that uses it.

    For those that aren't geeks living and breathing firefox and mozilla this looks like the beginning of the end.

    So much for corporate adoption of mozilla*.* as well.
