What good is the learning feature if your PC is a laptop?
"Learning" may be great when your going for uptime, but on a laptop, your usually up and running for irratic periods of time. The "Learning" feature of code morphing will only hinder the performance that you need the FIRST TIME you run an application
I hope Crusoe goes with the wind. Its not hardened enough for embedded, not powerfull enough for pc and i personally don't think its "saving much juice". Hell, the biggest advantage in powersaving is your using a screen half the size of a modern laptop.
It wouldn't make sense for Nintendo and Sega to join forces. For the PS2 isn't competing on the games side, the PS2 is aimed at getting Sony royalties from its media empire. You have to remember that Sony does movies, music, games and everything else under the sun. The more PS2's they sell the more demand for DVD's they have the more they futher themselves. Sega and Nintendo don't and can't compete in a market like that. I believe they will downsize and or "streamline" to provide the great products they already do. On the other hand, Sony is just an AT&T in the making. A Company to big for its own good.
What keeps nintendo going is its developers and the tight relationships they have
What keeps sega going is the arcade hits and ofcourse its developer talent.
What keeps the PS*.* going is a bunch of hype!
I'm kind of suprised the slashdot crowd being so anti monopolistic and open source fell in so much love with the most monopolistic and closed hardware and software console system around.
It compares extremely well considering it has been out for almost 2 years in japan and over a year in the US.
Excellent Graphics
Excellent Sound
4 Player out of the box
200+ Games
56K Modem built in, NIC adaptor released in jap
Can you say fun?
With games like Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure, Ecco the Dolphin, Metropolis Street Racer, NBA2K1, NFL2K1, Jet Grind Radio, Ferrari F355, Toy Commander, Phantasy Star Online, Skies of Arcadia, Quake 3 Arena, Unreal Tournament, Soul Calibur, DOA2, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, Ready 2 Rumble you can't go wrong. I mean hell, if you own 4 of any of the above titles you have had your monies worth in gaming
The $150.00 Price tag is also much more affordable. The PS2 is newer and may have some more colors, but the DC is a choice competitor especially for having a couple years under its belt. The network play IS amasing even at 56k and the 100mbit ethernet adaptor is almost stateside (already sold in japan). There is also a keyboard & mouse combination and the web browser is usefull. (Supports Flash, HTML 3.2, Java Script, Media and mp3's).
Your decision! But i'll preach the DC over the PS2 anyday. It is very worthwhile to on a PSX simply because of the library, but hell, if you have a PSX, the PS2 is only the same sh*t just prettier!:)
What are you talking about? I travel 99% of the year for my job. My dreamcast sits in a softcase and makes it from hotel to hotel and airplane to airplane perfectly well.
Infact the DC is one of the most rock solid consoles i have ever had.
And SSX is not a reason to get a PS2. If your gonna spend 400 bucks for one game your on crack.
Once again people snag up a consumer device like there is no tommorow. Not realising that the games suck, the graphics don't mean squat when played on the average tv and the dvd functionality is ok at best.
So how does it feel to spend 500.00 on a console, 2 controllers and one game? How does it feel to play the same Madden that has been out on the PSX for years now?
How many of those 1000.00 bids on ebay do you think are going to be paid? Most likely its lil johny going to wacky with the bidding.
Oh, btw. while everyone is fighting for the PS2 i'll be watching DVD's in all glory on a full DTS compatible DVD player with digital outs as dvd's are meant to be. I will also be playing PSX and Dreamcast and N64 games that everyone blindly forgets and oh, i'll have 400-500.00 left to buy christmas gifts for my friends.
I'll wait till next year or the year after when the real consoles come out. There is a reason sony is selling the ps2 at a loss, they expect americans to be stupid:)
Google should buy it up.

Maybe linux people forget that linux is linux and not unix:)
Not all of those are free. Look at how much people pay to license thinks from guis to the famouse motif libraries and all sorts of source code.
Login to a sun box and you will see many of the same copyrights, rights to use, licensing and such.
Havn't you ever wondered what the point of one thing running under everything is?
Apple isn't trying to make MacOSX run under everything under the sun. Therefore the kernel will be tighter, system will be easier to maintain and everything else that goes along with a signle architecture.
Sun doesn't make it a point to sell Solaris for Alpha, SGI, IBM RISC (which is powerpc based).
Sounds like people with there PS 2 systems as well.
nothing new. people think it is allegiance or a game. Hell, i'm suprised slashdot doesn't forward your browser elsewhere if you don't run linux:)

Fast, clean interface and quick install. The Windows Installer was actually nice and didn't require a reboot or anything. It also imported my mozilla cache/cookies and everything just fine. I hope these 2 browsers don't split up very much when they developers break the tree.
It works great, using it to post this message. Very nice interface, love the new scrollbars and the integration with the netscape websites and instant messanger is a nice feature. I don't understand how that is going backwards.
Anyhow, i recommend it. Works with my oracle system as well, and it appears the security manager works now with all my https sites.
congrats netscape, nice looking product! This should have been PR1:)
If isonews.com is legit, how about drugtrafficinginfo.org. Its not illegal to give news on anything then how about telling all the great places to grab some dope or pickup som cocaine for your crazy ass bosses?
And cmdrtaco, your ass is wrong on DC sales by over 6 million #'s. SO get off the PS2 bandwagon and give some stories that are truthfull instead of spitefull to your limited mindset.
Yes, slashdot is suckdot really bad right now. My viewership has gone from several times a day to once a week. Nothing worth noting. Linux is old news, patent infringements are passe and geezus christ, what are you defending with the Sega VS isonews.com
I should make a slashdotnews.com and setup programs that are illegal to send out but have news on how to view sites without legal signons, spam them and not get banner adds sent. But then again it wouldn't be illegal because i'm just talking about the software and not "technically" giving it to you.
Condone freedom of speech, don't condone illegal activities no matter how much it saves you money to waiste on whatever else material things people are so stuck up on.
Its not this is what i expect, it is this is what i do.
A college degree wouldn't give me any more self esteem then knowing i have done it on my own. If shit happens, then shit happens. I've learned to move on, be prepared and move through life the way i see fit. I can't control anything in reality other then immediate issues.
College doesn't teach you reality. I'm sure alot of kids hit it while they're in school, but there is alot more chapter 7 or whatever bankruptcies out there because of ill founded college experiences. I'm sure there alot of pathetic dropouts as well. Too each there own. Your world is what YOU make of it. You accept everyone elses world and its YOUR loss for not doing anything to make it better for you.
Yeah, i may live in the evil empire according to some people, but i choose not to act in a fashion that most people do.
And yes, STATE colleges are beer drinking, getting chicks pregnant doing nothing colleges. I tried Texas Tech, i spent some time at UT down in Corpus Christi Campus.
I felt better at a small community college because it was focused, genuinly smart people, but not uber inteligent so they seem dictational.
I didn't have the money for MIT, didn't make the grades in high school frankly. I was too busy doing whatever.
You do miss on getting into psychology and such, but college isn't always the answer to being well rounded. Church group, civic groups, donating your time to ederly and exploring life is more rewarding then siting in a classroom.
It could have been public schools that spoiled me. But i think this topic is so hot because its filled with jealousy, rage and cockyness on both sides. Its a win win situation when you do whats best for yourself.
There is academia, there is the business world, the arts and physics and social services along with an unexplored and still young IT world. They all have there place in reality. And reality is to do what YOU want and makes YOU happy.
I find those traits in more college graduates than any other person.
Typical college graduate engineers get the company pocket protecter, max out there credit cards get married, get a belly and grow old with a company. While not bad, not practical for me. I don't want that.
I guess people perceive me as being cocky because i quit to achieve something for me rather "then the company"
But to me, life isn't about "College" it isn't about "The company" it isn't about what is right or what is wrong to society, its about how you choose to live it.
By being a biggot one way or another you limit your sociall beliefs to one specific group and are considered narrow minded. By not conforming your considered uneducated.
I don't want a world of beuracracy, politicians, war, animal science, biggots, fraters and single minded people. I want a world were society is evolutional instead of so twisted on perception.
Too bad taking control of your life and making decisions on your own pisses off the followers. Some people win, some people loose. Even when you loose you only truely loose when you give up.
I've lost everything several times, and that tought me to be prepaired and cautious. I didn't have to spend 20 grand at school to learn that, it only cost me some cheap furnitre and a girl i shouldn't have dated in the first place:)
IT companies pay for smart people. They don't pay for graduates, they don't pay for people with a piece of paper, they pay for "Can you do the job".
While it used to pay to say "my college says i can" it doesn't work that way. 2 kazzillion other people are saying that. Meanwhile an accomplished set of go getters that are both graduates and non graduates are getting these jobs and moving up because of HOW THEY SOLVE THE HIRRING MANAGERS SOLUTIONS.
I wouldn't want to work for a company that needed a piece of paper. That would mean a boring job for me. I could tell by that single mindset alone its probably a boring job, dead end until you get something better then a diploma.
Its alot harder to prove you can. It is alot easier to reiterate what you HAVE ACCOMPLISHED.
I feel sorry for the people who go to school and expect life to solve itself because they have a piece of paper. Those are the blue collar workers of the future.
Thats the problem with college graduates. Assuming that because they went, someone who didn't is of lessor quality.
Sure you may not be about jobjobjob or whatever, but not everyone is. College or no college doesn't bring that trait out. Entering the workforce without college degree doesn't mean jobjobjob as well either. For me skipping college was life life life. It was 4 years i had to grow up in my own rules and in my own ways.
I travel, i work, i read, i invent, i think, i enjoy life. I mountain bike as much as i can, i travel across the states as much as i can, i collect art, i talk to people from across the world, i discuss theories with my friends. People recognize me for my talents, abilities, brain and qualities in my spirit. Sure i don't spell the best but thats a trait of being a genius in the way that i am.
I don't discuss the odysee and ulyses or anything like that, it doesn't interest me.
If 12 years of public education isn't enough to spark a human mind, i find it hard to believe 4 years of university can solve that problem.
You hit it right on a good note! I couldn't agree with you more.
It was never about the money, it was a choice of our life and a decision of growing up and doing something.
To me it is an accomplishment and i feel complete. Meanwhile everyone i know graduating from the local universities still live at home, still work at minimum wage jobs and are JUST NOW THINKING about what they can do.
To me, college presses more on the life of yesteryear. Make a decision on what you want to do for the rest of your life and stick to it. Grow up and grow old and respect your alma matter and never change. That doesn't fit for me. Pride in myself is more honorable then pride in a foundation. Pride in my accomplishments and my abilities and the abilities of my peers is what keeps me going day to day.
I will go to school. I'm just going to the local community college to brush up and get an associates in business so i can move up.
Without a college education i run a couple HPUX boxes in a multinational company and am the sole DBA for Oracle 8 and Applications Release 11. It is my responisibility to make sure that 4 organizitions can run manufacturing, shippig, receiving, order entry and the whole 9 yards of an enterprise business system. I learned resource planning, Wip, project accounting, ledger, and the whole application sweet on my own and through experience and through my ability to figure out things. I learned how to solve problems on my own. I didn't learn a method of solving problems, but i learned how to conform my own methods that fit the question and the solution. College can't give you a brain to think, its something you just got to use. For some people college is the key, but not for me.
It was never money. Just so happens my talents pay for my life and pay for me to live a very comfortable style in my own ways.
And there is no way in hell college could give that to me.
It is my belief that education is entirely up to the individual.
For me college is a joke. I took my time looking into it. Living in a dorm, drinking beer and joining a frat all while supposedly "growing up" didn't make sense for me.
I chose my own path, and have proven myself to my peers and the people who have hired me to work for them.
I don't have a college education, i have an open mind, and honest heart and i will work. Everyone whom i work with who HAS a college education is so stuck in there ways and habits and beliefs that they cannot in any shape form or fashion be in the IS group and maintain a clear and concise communications channel to make things flow, the college grad is off to try and snuff someone elses job because they think they can rather then trying to feel the need to accomplish anything. I feel if you earn your education its better off then buying it, i wish smart people had a smart school that wouldn't put them in debt for life or produce assinine souls.
College to me adds biggotry to the soul. I don't see the asset in learning how to conform. If college was only the price of an education i would be there in a heartbeat.
My university has been the internet, my spare time and lots of mocha's and coffee at Barnes and Noble and such. I find it more rewarding to crack open a book and theorize from many different sources then be told a wrong and right way to do things. I get pissed off when a teacher demands one way of thinking.
Being a self taught person i understand how i learn. College is great for people who can study and apply what they remember. College is not however the easiest route for someone who is inventive and conceptual about how they perceive things and do things.
Hey, i'm 24. Make 60k a year, have full benifets, a huge 401k plan already and paid tuition. I will NEVER have a college loan or payments to m make, I am however working on getting an associates in business and managment so i can advance my career. I am simply going to community college that is right in front of the company i work for since we donated the property:)
So to me, going to college is a waiste of time. I lived my drinking days, partying, skipping school and "general college freedoms" when i was in high school. When i went out to the real world i went out to accomplish something. College doesn't give you that, simply choosing to do something does.
I much prefer the flair of Me/Win2k over linux anyday. No CLI, i don't want one. No painfull XF86config, i don't want that.
Games work out of the box. DirectX and OpenGL have been stable for a while now.
Virtual Private Networking works out of the box. I don't have to drive to work to do maintenance on my HP Box (yes, i love Oracle on HP UX 11 boxen).
For my home PC i want my Multimedia, Streaming audio/video. I want my DVD player to work as a DVD player. I don't want to have to compile or crack software to make it work either.
I like being able to use USB scanners/camera's and media devices.
Win2k/WinNT make GREAT file servers that will run forever if you give it the same respect as you would any other server.
Reason most NT/Win systems fudge up is because of all the CRAP people put on them. If you want a webserver then an NT box running web/email/pop will stay up forever. Don't go installing a bunch of crap. Same goes for a linux box. Install a bunch of crap, get stuck in "lib hell" instead of dll hell and your on the same boat.
But yes. Unix solutions and NT solutions still differ BUT microsoft is making that difference alot smaller and alot faster then any other OS is.
I'm sorry, but the market share for Windows is HUGE. I wish HP would lower there prices on Unix systems as well as sun.
Go into a sun office and i bet you will find hundreds of PC's running Windows, Windows NT and Windows 2000.
Go to HP and you will see NT Servers running along side there own HPUX servers
Go to Andover.net and i'm sure you will see people running Microsoft windows as well! (Oh my.. how can it be)
What hair is tickling everyones asses that they feel it is important to spread fud about microsoft or anyone for that matter for what OS they use. Microsoft is also an APPLICATIONS and NETWORKING COMPANY as well.
So please, get off your linux 0wnz all bandwagon and realise there is a world of choices out there and no, this is not the GNU generation is is the technology generation and so far linux has proved less technologically superior to almost everything else out there.

Too bad taking control of your life and making decisions on your own pisses off the followers. Some people win, some people loose. Even when you loose you only truely loose when you give up.
I've lost everything several times, and that tought me to be prepaired and cautious. I didn't have to spend 20 grand at school to learn that, it only cost me some cheap furnitre and a girl i shouldn't have dated in the first place :)
I am simply going to community college that is right in front of the company i work for since we donated the property :)
So to me, going to college is a waiste of time. I lived my drinking days, partying, skipping school and "general college freedoms" when i was in high school. When i went out to the real world i went out to accomplish something. College doesn't give you that, simply choosing to do something does.
But be a wise man/women. Choose your own path.
WHO CARES.
