The idea that 100% employement is not needed and that people can enjoy life and have fun instead working is in fact communism. Communism always look good on posters and in books, but in reality it killed lots of people in many different ways (more than nazism or religions). And it still looks good for newcomers.
If you give all work to robots and let people do nothing, then after some time, some people realize that they need more. More stuff, more space, more resources. The obvious result will war. And war never changes.
In my humble opinion this article is bulls**t and it should not be on front page of Slashdot. Why should anyone care how much time/energy someone uses on his own computer? Bitcoin bubble bursts, so journalist must create some brain-dead articles about it, but why you post in on Slashdot???
My first PC was 386 DX 40Mhz, Duke Nukem required much stronger hardware. However I think it's a bad idea to use DOS emulation for games like Duke or Doom because they are open source and you can play native builds on Linux.
Users don't care about Free Software at all. In fact, users don't care about software at all as long at it works.
Few days ago I got idea, that one of the most popular app for android is just trojan/spyware. I did some research. I tried to find more info about creators, only to find out that I am probably right. Then I found thread with same idea (about same software), posted many months ago. I read user replies. They just posted things "if you don't like it don't use it" or "do you have windows? microsoft knows all about you". There wasn't a single explaination about the idea that this software is trojan/spyware. People just don't care. They got something for free, so they use it.
There is only a small group of people who really care, some of them are here, on Slashdot. But this is elite, insignificant group of users.
What is your current opinion on Android? Do you consider Android as a "Linux", "Linux type" or "Linux child"? Are you connected somehow with Android development?
After release of GNOME 3 I moved into opposite direction (I was using xfce for many years).
Anyway it's a good thing, because I dislike GNOME/KDE integration of single applications, for instance I use k3b which is only usable dvd burner and it comes from KDE. If xfce will be default then maybe some people realize applications should work everywhere not fit GNOME desktop.
Well.. it also means that after 5 years your photos are not your anymore. So please now image photos you made 5 years ago, they could be used in the anti-diarrhea commercial! Isn't this cool?

This is bullshit. All you need on desktop today is a web browser. There are web browsers for Linux and they work. You can communicate, watch movies and listen music in your web browser, but you can also use separate applications for communication, music or movies. And everything works on Linux. And you can give configured Linux box to newbie and he or she will just use it.
Maybe you still don't get it, but people are not spending half of their lives playing 3D games. They just use web browser, some kind of communicator and various mutimedia viewers / document editors.
I understand that after 2000 lots of people changed their priorities, Slashdot almost died (Digg is dying now), many companies changed their profile, but in the background you can see that Open Source and Free Software is stronger than ever. Look at mobile phones, where is your Windows now? I also understand that Internet is full of Apple fanatics and (hidden in closet) Microsoft fanatics. But the truth is that Linux on desktop just works. No matter how loud you will cry your frustrations.
This is just a matter of time and you will all realize that buzzwords are still buzzwords. No matter is it 2000 or 2010, some things are just plain stupid and will disappear.
Are you aware of fact how it looks from Europe? If blinking advert can stop whole city, how can you just live there? I just can't believe that's true. This is too ridiculous.
Let's face it. This is a theft of intellectual property. It already happened. I know that irrlicht is not a GPL software, but is is a Free Software and FSF should act now, instead talking over and over about many different things. Why not use the law they have to fight the "evil company" and show the world that this battle can be won?
Music map is interesting, but I needed to enable scripts in FireFox, I don't see reason why it uses scripts and all this animation instead simple results list. http://www.music-map.com/
