"I think it's safe to assume Microsoft is going to end up requiring everyone to use Passport in order to use services like Hotmail."

You're behind the times pal - MS locked Passport into Hotmail a long time ago. I've never visited Passport.com, but I have my happy little Passport ID, since I've been a member of Hotmail since way back before MS owned them.

The strange thing is that when I go to get my downloads, I still get asked for my BetaID & password. I can't log into without logging into Passport. You'd think that having a singular uname/pass would be convenient, except that I know need two unmaes/passes to get into one place. How thoughful of MS.

  4. Re: HP is close. on On the Question of Handhelds: iPaq Best? · · Score: 1

My HP Jornada 548 also has "HP task switcher", which does what you mention about the iPaq's 'Q' button. It only has 32MB of memory, but with the built in CF slot, that is less of an issue [especially since you can get a 128MB CF card for $80 shipped]. The durability of the Jornada is second to none.

The one area it loses ground is the slow 133MHz SH3 processor. It's fast enough to do your everyday tasks, with limited multi-tasking, but playing Quake would be a bit slow. Hopefully, HP's next Jornada will have something with a little more power beind it.

  7. Sounds fun, but does Apple care? on OS X on x86? · · Score: 3
I'm a connoisseur of OSes. I install 'em all to play with [*BSD, Linuxes, BeOS, Windows], so for this reason I would like an x86 version of OS X. I already grabbed the supposed Intel port of Darwin [not yet tried it out].

But, does Apple care about such a beast?

They would have to start supporting the newest technology, from all different vendors, not just themselves. Big expansion of their happy little driver coding armies

They would have to expand their customer services exponentially, to support all the people fleeing MS, who don't know the first thing about MacOS, let alone *nix.

The would be taking an aggressive step towards MS, that they would not take to kindly. I mean Apple's not really competition for MS in the PC market, but this would make them direct competitors, and everyone has an opinon about what MS does to competitors.

I don't think it is in Apple's best interest [as far as business practices are concerned] to supply an x86 port of OS X. It may be a nice little bit of press, and 'response to customer appeals', but it would change a lot of their business model.

Of course, there is the added benefit [to end users] of increased interoperability between both *nix and Macs, which may be a nice bit for the business world. Interesting thought... MS's being the only OSes without the OS X seal of approval.

    My pennies,
