Any satellites put into orbit should be required to have the capability of being brought down safely. Maybe this doesn't need to become a requirement for all satellites. Little ones that will burn up totally aren't a problem. However, satellites that have parts that aren't going to burn up nicely on re-entry need to be able to be redirected to the oceans. Imagine the amount of energy the 100 lb. chunck of flaming hot iron from this satellite is packing.
If they could control this thing and bring it down when and where they wanted they could potentially do some interesting stuff. Like having it streak over the opening ceremonies at the Olympics. Or if the had REALLY fine control they could light the olynpic calderon with it instead of using the torch. That would be even better than the flaming arrow. Or they could drop it on Bin Laden's head. Ok, now I am getting silly.
ps I am bitter because I submitted this exact article and had it rejected several hours before it appeared.
In this post you asked me a question which I failed to answer. Sorry about that. I can't to that discussion anymore and I can't find an email address for you so here goes my now offtopic answer. I hope that you read your messages better than I did.
Anyhow this page has a bunch of Towitoko readers, on for $39.95. There are a bunch of other vendors as well. If you order them in bulk you can get them for LOTS less.
Actaully, the tentative title of the new NBC show Watching Ellie was originally going to be something along the lines of "22 minutes". I can't find my source fo r that info right now. Anyhow, they were told that they couldn't name it that since 1/2 hours shows in the USA now take less than 22 minutes and they didn't want viewers to have this pointed out to them either by naming the show "21 minutes" or by going ahead with the "22 minutes" title and then dealing with an uproar when people noticed that it was in fact not a 22 minute long show.
I find it funny that you, a reporter for Business 2.0 as you proudly proclaim on your website, would call "bullshit" without doing your research. For shame!
Also, the parent post included a disclaimer stating that even if the story wasn't true (and it was), the moral of it was true.
how can you all be such idiots?
I guess because we weren't privledged enough to go to Cal.
ps Since I'm in a pissy mood I'll ask the following: Do you get to submit your articles without any capitalization?
We bought my in-laws a 6" Dobsonian mounted Newtonian reflector and they've really enjoyed it. It is VERY easy to use and is powerful enough to be fun. Also, it didn't cost too much. It is easy to move around so they can take it out on a whim and it isn't so expensive that they are concerned about the grandkids destroying it.
Even if there are problems in Nevada it seems imperative to store this stuff at a secure site as soon as possible.
As a Utah resident, I happen to be well aware of the industry's backup plan: They want to simply put the containers in a big parking lot owned by an Indian tribe. They would keep the containers there until Yucca Mountain opened. The nuclear energy industry has promised "a lot of money" (nobody knows how much) to this tribe, but the leadership of the tribe has recently shifted. Perhaps this had something to do with the decision.
Anyhow, if anybody decided to drop an airplane on their open-air parking lot then bye-bye Salt Lake City. If the winds were just right Denever might go too.
You are correct, it is Dublin Dr. Pepper. I buy it at the local "fancy pants" market.

Then you would find it in glass bottles with real sugar. After being taunted by my family for paying $1.50 a bottle for superior Dr. Pepper I conducted a blind taste test at a family party. Out of ten people 9 preferred the glass bottle Dr. Pepper. One couldn't tell the difference, but after the blind test claimed to enjoy the bottle version more. BTW, this was conducted against Dr. Pepper in a can. The WORST Dr. Pepper in my experience is Dr. Pepper in a 20 oz. plastic bottle. I have mixed experience with Dr. Pepper from the fountain and from 2 liter bottles.
Now before you claim that $1.50 for a bottle of Dr. Pepper is too much, remember what you just said:
I just hope you don't lead an unhappy life, with thousands in the bank getting moldy, because you don't want to "pointlessly waste money."
Have you considered smart cards? You can store prepaid credit on the card itself. You can keep a list of what is checked out currently on both the card and the a backend sysstem. This would be useful for proving to someone that they did indeed check something out. Ask for their card and show them the record of it from their card.
If you do it right the security is better. Readers aren't that expensive (~$50) and they also function as writers. Also cards are getting pretty cheap. $3 for Java card, less that $1 for some file system cards. Obviously this is more expensive than mag-stripe, but also much cooler.
disclaimer: I do smart card work full time so I am biased.

As I stare at my laptop screen each day I wish that I could raise it a bit without having the keyboard end up at my chin. Wouldn't it be cool/useful it laptops came with some mechanism for moving the screen independently from the base? I don't mean simply tilting it, but moving it up and down as well as turning it to either side. Moving it closer to me and further would be useful too.
The only problems that I could see with a feature such as this is that you might be able to change the center of gravity of the machine enough to tip it over and it might be difficult to design a mechanism that would be both lightweight and durable.
Apple introduces new iMac today. "Goodbye to old iMac." New iMac has 15" flat panel display (1024x768 resolution). "Today is official death of CRT." All new iMacs have G4 processor running at 700MHz or 800MHz. iMac has SuperDrive option. DVD-R media now only costs $5/disc. Includes nVidia GeForce2Mx with 32MB of memory on all iMac models. Apple Pro Speakers bundled on 2 of 3 Macs. Apple presents new iMac: "lamp-style" iMac with flat panel connected to rounded base. Screen is adjustable in any direction and angle can be adjusted. Connectors in back with disk in front. No power brick (integrated into base). As high as CD jewel case (10.5" diamater). Access to computer via 4-screws on the bottom--can hold up to 1GB of memory as well as AirPort card. Three models:
700MHz G4/128MB/40GB/CD-RW for $1299.
Second model with 256MB ofRAM and Combo (DVD/CD-RW) for $1499 (700MHz G4/256MB/40GB).
Third model has 800MHz G4/256MB/60GB/SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) for $1799.
$1799 model to ship by end of January. $1499 by February, and $1299 by March. Apple is taking orders now. Apple has taken its first order from Genentech for 1000 iMacs (Chairman/CEO Art Levinson sits on Apple's Board of Directors). New marketing videos for iMac and iPhoto shown at keynote.
So as you can see they will all have G4 chips and the prices will not be in pounds!:)
Would someone please explain to me why Palm didn't include left/right buttons along with the up/down ones? Or even just a direction pad?
I am not saying that a Palm could be competion to a GBA, but they could have easily given a nod to the gaming market and it wouldn't have hurt it in any way that I can see.
Yes I know that you can use the other buttons, but that is really a sloppy solution to a simple problem.
There seems to be a belief among some US IT managers that overseas programmers are not only cheaper but better.
Or maybe managers feel that overseas programmers simply do EXACTLY what they're told without rasing any issues or worrying if including certain "features" makes sense. Overseas programmers make them feel smarter by giving them what they ask for instead of pointing out that what they are asking for is really what they want.
Taco, did you just post at +3? I currently see no moderations to your post, yet it is at +3. How much karma do I need to post at +3. Is it an unwritten rule that I can't?
I borrowed the 13-disc set from a friend. I ripped it to mp3 so I could listen to it without having to swap discs.
So I sat down to work one day and fired up the mp3 player. Two hours later I realized that I had done NO WORK! I had simply sat there basking in the glory of this production.
I usually listen to music when I work at home and don't find that distracting at all.
Unfortunately I also found this Lord of the Rings things completely addicting. I found myself looking for excuses to listen to it. Luckily it is only 13 hours long.
I think that I should have saved this for commuting and caused some accidents.
Having seen it now I can nitpick. Most of the nitpicks that others have mentioned were things that didn't bother me. Here are the few things that did:
1. Gandalf didn't add a puff of smoke when Bilbo puts on it ring that the birthday party. This would have helped to show his suspicions about the ring, though one of my favorite moments comes just after when Gandalf rises in power to tell Bilbo to give the ring to Frodo. You could see that the guise of an old man was covering a much more powerful being.
2. There wasn't a sense of time passing between the birthday party and Gandalf coming to the Shire again. In the book decades had passed. The only indication in the movie that it was more than a few months was Bilbo's age once he appears at Rivendell. My father who has never read the books thought that was just because he hadn't had the ring for a few months.
3. This is my MAJOR NITPICK: Frodo didn't offer the ring to Agent Smit... I mean Elrond. It seems to me that Frodo offering the ring to the three most incorruptible people he meets (who also happen to be Ring Bearers themselves) is an important aspect of the story. They aren't strong enough to take the One Ring and fulfill the quest to destroy it. Yet a hobbit is. I can see why many things were cut for simplicity's sake and to shorten the movie. Yet but leaving this out the movie doesn't emphasize the importance of the hobbits as much as it could. The symbolism is broken. Sure he offered it to Gandalf and Galadriel (my mom even thinks he offered it to Aragorn, while I think he was asking if Aragorn would try to take it from him as Boromir did) but these two offerings loose some of their meaning by leaving Elrond out.
4. The Council of Elrond sucked. It was the one part of the movie that struck everyone that I was with (and that had read the books) as not right.
Now I have to admit that there are a few other minor things that bothered me, but that is about it. That in itself is a major accomplishment. I thought that I was going to tear this movie apart. Instead I think it is great. I now have high hopes for the trilogy as a whole. The great thing about it is that it will have a consistent feel, having been filmed all at once. Everyone I was with would have gone right back in to the theater for another three hours if they had been showing The Two Towers. As it was, all the people that we saw dressed up like Gandalf were already seeing FotR for the second or third time that day. This was at 4pm.
In all, it was a great experience. Anybody know if the FotR DVD will come out before T2T hits theaters? My bro thinks they should re-release FotR in November 2002 so that people can see it again just before T2T.

Since it was an Apple laptop you might be able to figure out a way to cause the battery to heat up enought to catch on fire and burn the house down. :)

Here is a Salt Lake Tribune article about the consequences of the Yucca Mountain decision for the "put them ALL in a parking lot in the desert in Utah" plan.
