I think he was referring to the fact that in, say, all western republics/democracies/whatever, 50% is the number of the population needed for passing a law. So, if 50% of the population were child molesters, they could pass a law that makes it legal. He wasn't saying at all that it would make it right, rather the opposite (unless you hold the view that the law is always right, in which case you are the one in great need of "waking up and facing the music"...<karma-plug>of course this is slashdot and we all know DMCA</karma-plug>).

    OT but I'll bite:

It's not like this would be anything new. Look to the depression in 1929, this is exactly what happened then! The thing is: Lower wages -> less money in the general public -> sales go way down -> the companies can produce everything they want with machines, but there won't be customers so it doesn't matter. Eventually the firms go bankrupt, and, provided governments not too right wing are in place, things will get on their feet again (look to New Deal).

I agree fully with the parent of the parent: Redundant work is useless work, no matter what a fancy system of green paper notes and bits in the banks' computer system we put on top of it. If the economy won't allow us to be productive then that is the fault of the economy not the other way around.

  10. I don't think it's for the movie... on In Line for Episode II · · Score: 1

I hear a lot of "no life", lot of "insane"...

Well, considering how The Phantom Menace fared, these people might not be doing this for the movie itself you know. Ever heard about the best part about something great is waiting for it? Well it's often true (here it definitely will be).

People go climbing Mount Everest. People cross the poles. Nations send people to the moon. People work all day and night to make themselves the richest people in town, even long after they've filled whatever needs money could ever hope to fill.

Here, some people have decided that waiting in line for Episode II will be a worthwhile thing to do. Pure rationally, how is that different from climbing Mount Everest? Did humanity gain anything from that? Did the climbers gain anything? Of course they did, they got an EXPERIENCE, they got MEMORIES, they had A CHALLENGE. The view on the top might be impressing, but it's hardly the main reason for doing the climb. And unless they're doing it to boost their egos: It might matter to you that they climbed the highest mountain in the world, and you might think it is a lot more important than standing in a theatre line, but all they did was doing something they (hopefully) wanted, getting a change from everyday life, perhaps getting a sense of purpose and knowing why they were where they were. Is that so awfully different from what we see here? Yet, people spending smaller or larger parts of their life trainloads of money/climbing mountains/walking the poles....you say *those* people have a life...me, I say they're (or we're) all doing the same thing as these people lining up for the biggest anticlimax in history is.

If these people had gone camping in the woods for four months instead noone would have reacted this way...I mean, once you remove a purpose it's ok?

I wouldn't have pursuited something like this myself (for starters, I like trees better than concrete, I'd go for the wood camp). But I can see why they would. And if they make some documentary about this or whatnot, it will be enjoyable to watch. Not to know what extremes people are willing to go to, but to perhaps get a feel of the chilly morning air blowing across your face as you enjoy a steamy cup of boiling black coffee, watching people getting to work and knowing that sitting there on the street has some purpose. There and then, what that purpose is doesn't matter. It's how the human mind works, observe people not knowing what started wars once they've been started...we only occupy different states of living and are not as rational about our purposes as we like to think. What purpose does your "get a life" fill? People make their own purposes these days (getting more money than they could ever hope to spend being a totally fruitless but very common one), and in my opinion I can't see why this is worse than trying to climb Everest.

I think this is cool. And I don't even like the films (that much, that is, must admit I'll try to catch an early ticket myself ;-). Go for it guys!!!

[It's late and I'm tired so this may or may not make sense...I think you can get the jist of my general view on the matter though]

Without being able to ship stuff around (in general, not only UPS and FedEX of course), the world would stop. No medicines shipped around. No food. No computers either for that matter.

Personally I'd require much higher wages to work with something as utterly boring as shipping than say, programming. Programming is so rewarding I often do it without earning money for it (can you spell open source?). On the other hand I probably won't start handling packages unless I get very well paid for it or desperately need the little money it can provide.

Well, with most shows that is ok, only the ones that are long awaited (I guess that only really happens with movies with geek appeal) get special treatment...

Also remember that this is Denmark we're talking about, knowing it is probably a lot similar to Norway there is not nearly as many or as big theatres there. If it's anything like Norway we're talking three or four really big and great (thinking mostly the size and quality of the sound systems here, but also some crowd and media coverage is good) theatres in the whole country. People don't want to watch these special movies in a small theatre with average sound (especially because of the aforementioned geek appeal), so people flock to the cities to see the movies even if the local theater would view them at the same time.

(BTW, With StarWars ep1, in Oslo premiere started at midnight, going through all the night, with breakfast included in the ticket price...the same will probably be done with LoTR)

Did anyone out there actually line up far in advance for Ep1?

I know in Norway they did...

And lining up like this (while not having done it myself) is probably somewhat of an experience in itself. In the Oslo SWEp1 queue lots of people were dressed up as Darth Vader or Darth Maul or Luke or Leia or whatever...they seemed to make a good time out of it.
