The Hays code was expressly designed to ensure movies were not sending a message of immorality - which kinda translates to "don't show or imply anything which might suggest sex" and make sure everything is in "good taste".

Does the "federal workforce" referred to in that article refer only to people who work directly for the government? Afaict there has been a trend away from the government directly paying people to do work for them and towards the government paying contractors to do it.
Yes, federal workforce are those civilians who receive a Federal paycheck, but that can include permanent full time, career conditional (not yet permanent), temp, term, part time, interns, students, and seasonal (I think that's most of the categories). Right now this may not include the Judicial system nor the Postal Service - I'm not certain. Some agencies make use of agencies that provide contract workers but they are not 'federal workers'. With sequestration agencies may need to cancel some contracts that provide workers (or goods and services) and many seasonal workers will not be hired.
I don't know how seasonals and workers other than permanent will be treated but expect that they can 'just' be let go more or less. There are also contracts for some jobs for "as needed" workers and I imagine that they won't be activated unless it's an emergency and then other employees man need to be furloughed to pay for them.
Whenever a government department is threatened with cuts, they announce that they'll cut front-line staff and not overpaid managers or worthless paper-pushers. That's why government spending expands forever until the economy collapses.

AFAIK the furloughs can last only 22 workdays or 30 calendar days and then a RIF (reduction in force starts automatically). When furloughs will start depends on the financial state of the Federal agency. Some, such as DoD will start at the earliest time, April 1. The Forest Service (US Dept. of Agriculture) will be able to hold off until 1 May or later, for instance.
The reduction in force list is developed mostly by formula and depends on skills, seniority, military service, etc. I think that most of the lists have been (or are being compiled) but not released. An employee on the RIF list can 'bump' a an employee not on the list if the employee is qualified for the position (some other conditions, too) and then that employee can bump someone else and so on. RIFs are expensive in present but will result in savings in the future.

Hundreds of thousands have lost jobs, lost their homes, lost businesses, their children their hopes of college, etc. In this financial state we are cutting down on government spending, thus causing thousands to loose jobs directly and suppliers to fire workers. It's been working so well that (snicker) that many want it expanded. This will result in more foreclosures, etc. But don't worry this is the road to prosperity; Greece and Spain, for instance, have had fiscal austerity forced on them and are watching their economy spiral down the drain. We should follow this model?
Governments role is to try to preserve jobs during fiscal downturns; if cutting government spending is needed it should be done in good times when the effects of this economic poison is diluted.
I work for a US Federal Agency and our notebooks were all encrypted about two years ago. I know that some problems arose from that but in my major problem is that it takes 10 or, more often, 15 minutes from boot to have a usable machine! We will soon need to insert a "LinkPass" card in our machines to be able to use them (we have had the passes for a few years), we must wear the cards in the facility, and they will be used to unlock exterior doors, too. It's going to be difficult to remember to take the card out when one leaves the vicinity of the office/cubical.

I did my first coding at 37 on using punch cards and coded for cash the next year. A couple of years ago I had to switch from C/C++ and Windows to Java on LINUX and have learned Java and some LINUX. When my Raspberry Pi arrives in a couple of weeks I'll start on Python! Mostly my job descriptions have been Ecologist with some coding. I look at most of the coding I've done as problem/puzzle solving.
Is the 600 barrels a measure of volume, 42 gallons to a barrel? Did it mean 600 drums of unknown capacity, perhaps 55 gallon drums? But it's a Canadian story and wouldn't they use metric? Perhaps the barrels are made of maple wood, charred inside and used for aging the syrup, eh?
Try this alternative. Join the military, shoot a lot different weapons, work in very loud enclosed spaces, don't use effective ear protection (there was none). That's what I did; consequently I don't hear a lot of street noises and what's there is kinda covered up by the constant ringing in my ears. At least I wasn't shot and didn't get malaria so I'm not complaining.
