That would imply that they used a stock pci/isa bus. In my experience, the chips may be the same in an application specific device as well as a standard PC peripheral, but the lack of a standard bus would make it (MUCH!) harder to reverse engineer a driver.

It would be very interesting if it was a stock bus.

  2. Corrupted Inbox on Which Organizations Have Standardized on Mozilla? · · Score: 1

Mozilla-mail, for me, would crash and a result of this would be a corrupted Inbox. This started becoming a regular thing (I believe it was Mozilla 1.3 and all mail was stored locally because I used pop3 to retrieve my mail.) and I had to switch to something a little more stable. Ive used Kmail for about a year, upgraded it 3 times, and never lost an email. Alot has happened to Mozilla since then but I would strongly advise using a test group of power users before deploying it just to check its stability.

We have servers at work (1U rack mount) that are p4 2.0ghz machines whose only cpu cooling is a copper HSF combo and they really arent that loud. There are 12 of them and honestly the loudest part of the boxes are the powersupply fans. Even with those on and under heavy load (cluster used for wireless simulations), its still really quiet. He could have saved the cash and bought quiet fans and a new powersupply.

Ive also had positive experiences with the latest Dell boxes. P4 2.0ghz machines that you can barely tell are on because they are so quiet. If they can be that quiet, any machine can be built with that kind of noise output.

I do applaud the effort, but I wonder about his practicality.

These is a reason the record companies have this hold on the market, they control the flow of what we want. , and rightfully so. In reality, unless bands start their own labels, there is no way to cut them out of the deal. Alot of mainstream bands began such an undertaking and some have been quite successfull. I saw a "demonstration" of how a "security firm" broke into the 911 system of a large city. I think it was on ABC News but I could be wrong.

Their demo consisted of spoofing an email address and sending it to a worker's email address. I think it was signed the director or something. Attatched was a vb script that sent a netsend to everyone in the building to go to the director's office. And almost on queue, the camera went to the security firms office where a bunch of nerds were quoted as saying "we're in". Yeah, real impressive. I think my 4 year old cousing can cause more damage randomly hitting keys on the keyboard.

I never believe in firms like this. It all boils down to undereducated IT staff and less educated public. Its true, tell the public anything with a somewhat authoritarian/confident voice and they'll believe anything.

When was the last time a security firm noticed a a huge gaping hole in Microsoft code like the slammer, or the calls used by nimda. I cant picture a bunch of self proclaimed "experts in security" going over lines of code in Sendmail to find another buffer overflow.

Buyer beware. Its cheaper and more reliable just to read a book.
